News and notes from around the blue paint…

Chicago goes with Raanta

Antti Raanta will look to build on his wildly successful rookie campaign when the ‘Hawks take on the Wild in Minnesota tonight. Raanta hasn’t played much lately, but did stop 18 of 20 shots in a win over Edmonton on Jan. 12. On the year, he’s 12-1-3 with a 2.25 GAA and .911 save percentage.

Minnesota has yet to name a starter for tonight, but it’s likely going to be Darcy Kuemper.

Zatkoff relieves Fleury

In the second night of a back-to-back, the Pens will give Marc-Andre Fleury a rest and start Jeff Zatkoff against the Islanders.

Zatkoff struggled in his last outing — allowing four goals on 31 shots in a loss to the Oilers on Jan. 10 — but has been decent when called upon this season, boasting a 7-2-1 record with a 2.67 GAA and .906 save percentage.

He’ll be going up against Kevin Poulin in the Isles goal tonight.

Hurricanes at Sabres: Jhonas Enroth in for Buffalo; no starter yet from Carolina.

Blues at Rangers: Jaroslav Halak vs. Henrik Lundqvist

Flyers at Blue Jackets: Ray Emery vs. Sergei Bobrovsky

Senators at Lightning: Craig Anderson vs. Ben Bishop

Maple Leafs at Stars: Jonathan Bernier vs. Kari Lehtonen

Predators at Canucks: No confirmations from either team yet.

Kings at Ducks: Frederik Andersen for Anaheim; Jonathan Quick likely for L.A.

Jets at Sharks: Alex Stalock for San Jose; no word yet on a Winnipeg starter.

Emery & Bryz? Game worth watching just for those two.

Thought I read Bryz, was thoroughly disappointed to reread it and see Bobrovsky.

Nice to see Zatkoff getting another chance to start in net tonight. This will be a great test for Zatkoff. He has only played against bad teams including the Islanders two times he did pretty good against them, but now the Islanders are surging. I would like to see Zatkoff get more chances in the net. I would like to see him go up against better teams.

i would like to hear your reasoning for why you want the backup to start more often or against better teams.

Just incase Fleury falls apart in the Playoffs, at least if Zatkoff saw at least some action against some good teams in the regular season he wouldn’t be overwhelmed in the Playoffs. I also think they should play Zatkoff more. I think Fleury is on pace for a career high in games played. He needs a breather every now and then and not only for back to back games.

Your comment makes sense and I would agree with you in any other season; however Fleury is about to get a 2-3 week break in a couple weeks.

fleury’s on pace for 66 games played. career high is 67 and he’s done that 3 times. not that unusual, its 80% of the games scheduled. if regular season success/experience meant playoff success then fleury would be one of the most decorated goalies in the game right now, unfortunately it doesnt and it wont do jack for zatkoff either, playoffs are a different animal all together. no sense in having him get beat up against good teams and lose confidence. plus it doesnt help the pens in the standings either.

I get what your saying, but the last time Fleury played that many games he seemed to fizzle out in the Playoffs. I keep looking at the last time Fleury played well in the Playoffs he played in 62 games and was great in the Playoffs. I would try mimic that and play him only 62 times in the regular season.
