Hand injury won’t keep Jets’ Kane from fighting: ‘It’s a good part of the game’

Jan 20, 2014, 1:24 PM EDT

The Winnipeg Jets probably aren’t keen to hear it, but Evander Kane will keep on fighting.

“Fighting is a part of the game,” Kane said, per the Winnipeg Free Press. “It’s a good part of the game. It’s a necessary part of the game. You have to have it to control the game.”

Kane has missed the last four games after suffering a deep hand cut in this fight with Tampa Bay’s Eric Brewer:

It was just his second fight of the year and ninth of his career — “I don’t fight a lot,” Kane acknowledged — but despite that limited fight card, Kane is skilled with his fists. His father, Perry, was an amateur boxer that named his son after former heavyweight champ Evander Holyfield, and the younger Kane did some boxing training while growing up.

All that boxing background was on display in 2010, when Kane landed a devastating one-punch KO on Matt Cooke:

Kane insisted that, moving forward, he will continue to fight if challenged — even though he’s unsure when he’ll get back in the lineup.

“I’m not going to back down,” he said. “Let’s put it that way.”

I played Junior, was a ref, and have been an avid hockey fan for years. NEVER EVER have I seen a fight or a big hit help a team score a goal……The object of the game is to win the game, not the fights or hit totals.
    It’s a Canadian thing…”It’s our game”

2too, then you were obviously not watching or reffing properly, because it’s been scientifically proven that the team with the most fights wins the Stanley Cup. Always. Well, maybe except for the Red Wings, but they cheated by having too many good players on their team.

So Kane isn’t going to back away from a challenge?? You mean Brewer challenged Kane with the back of his head a few min before the “actual fight”??

Hate to see anyone injured, but Kane sucker punched Brewer when Brewer was already fighting a Jet team mate 4 min before this clip when “Brewer Challenged” him. Stupid and unnecessary.

I still can’t believe the refs gave out roughing minors when 3 pairs of gloves are on the ice and several punches were exchanged. He got called out by Brewer for being a punk. Brewer isn’t a fighter either, but he was standing up to a cheap shot by Kane in the first place.

Hope this kid matures in the future.

If he fights with tape/some form of bandage on his hand and the other guy gets cut or hurt its a match penalty…
