Report: No discipline for Benn’s elbow on Cooke

Jan 19, 2014, 12:36 PM EDT

Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn‘s elbow on Minnesota Wild forward Matt Cooke went unpunished during the game and won’t be looked into further by the NHL.

According to Michael Russo of The Star-Tribune, the league’s Player Safety Board will not be looking further into the play ruling that Benn’s hit on Cooke was a “protective maneuver.”

If you missed it last night, check out video of the hit here.

The hit certainly doesn’t look good and the fact it came against Cooke won’t earn him much sympathy in the public eye. It’s an ugly play, but the league has discussed these types of plays before and, according to that, Benn’s hit qualifies.

  1. killerpgh - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:45 PM

“protective maneuver” must be code for it’s ok because it was Matt Cooke and you never know with him. Cooke wasn’t even going for hit there (he was stopping and leaning away from Benn). I don’t think it was a suspended offense, but don’t say it was a “protective maneuver” when Benn was protecting nothing by giving the hit/elbow to Cooke. Just say we didn’t feel it needed supplement discipline.

    • 950003cups - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:50 PM

It was most certainly a “protective maneuver”. Benn was protecting future victims of that dbag Cooke. Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone ended his career on center ice.

The bible specifically says “Liveth by thy cheap shot, and dieth by thy cheap shot.”

      • strictlythedanks - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:08 PM

the bible also says kill innocent people and own slaves.

        your point?

Cookie is playing squeeky clean these days.

Isnt the bible also about forgiveness to all you christ munchers?

All i have to say is I hope benn and dirty dustin brown get cheap shotted and suffer severe injuries.

        because karma is a beotch

Nice cheap shot on gays, by the way. Total class from this one.

      • mp1131211 - Jan 19, 2014 at 4:29 PM

Hahaha…. omg. Stuff the bible down someone else’s throat, please! How annoying!!!!

We’re here to discuss hockey and the FACT that cooke handled that on ice situation by not retaliating shows that he’s put the effort in to reform his play. Let’s see how he acts on Tuesday when they rematch. Because the NHL didn’t do their job, now the players might have to… and the stupid cycle will continue.

Personally, I hope the Wild don’t seek revenge by any other way than throwing rubber past their goalie.

      • mp1131211 - Jan 19, 2014 at 4:35 PM

Hey, 95000000000000000000 cups, you’re being duped!

        http://www.jesusneverexisted.com

There’s FAR more evidence to argue that the story of Jesus was made up by the Romans to counter the power of the Jews than evidence that he ever existed let alone did what the bible says he did.

Back on subject, the NHL rulebook specifically says “48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted. However, in determining whether such a hit should have been permitted, the circumstances of the hit, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit or the head contact on an otherwise legal body check was avoidable, can be considered.”

NHL should have suspended Benn or AT VERY LEAST he should have sat for a penalty.

Act like you’ve been here before. Oh wait… Lol

  3. hardkor07mn - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:46 PM

Are you kidding me? That was as blatant as it gets! I know it’s Cooke and just about everyone would love to put some lumber in his teeth, but COME ON. You want to protect players heads and the you don’t do jack about a obvious shot to the head. Come on Shanny, pull your head out and call it both ways. Total bush league play.

  4. dontbsuchapuss - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:50 PM

So what he should have cracked him with his stick he is nothing more than a goon who plays dirty

    • mp1131211 - Jan 19, 2014 at 4:40 PM

You obviously don’t watch the Wild play much.

  5. lordfletcher - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:51 PM

I understand this happened against Cooke and I am not trying to sound like a Wild fan or supporter of Cooke, but clearly this is a hit that the league is “attempting” to address, and remove from the league.

if you don’t handle this equally for all players, how are the rules going to be respected?

    Sigh

  6. hardkor07mn - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:00 PM

The NHL has turned into the biggest goat rodeo on the planet. No consistency anywhere. There is a reason I watch ten times more college hockey. Good luck Shanny/Bettman. You are killing my favorite sport. Thanks guys.

  7. 950003cups - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:06 PM

Shanahan is the man!!!! He knows who deserves a skull cracking and who doesn’t. Good job policing the sport the way it should be!!

Look in the mirror. It’s no wonder why one of the largest ratings of Jersey Shore came from, GUESS WHERE… Yep you guessed it, the great hillbilly state of Minnesota. You morons thought you were watching the news.

      • mp1131211 - Jan 19, 2014 at 7:42 PM

So let me get this straight… you wish someone gets his face bashed in, but I suggest that something you believe might not be true and I’m the one that needs forgiveness and is a bad man?

  8. ndrick731 - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:08 PM

As long as Shanahan is around this type of thing will happen. He is as inconsistent as any nhl official has ever been. That being said Cooke needs to remember that he is not playing for Pittsburgh anymore so people are going to retaliate for all those years of getting away with everything short of murder.

  9. runhigh24 - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:10 PM

ironic that in the video describing protective manuevers cooke is a recipient of a head shot there as well. but hey these teams play again on tuesday. fortunately no one ever seeks retribution for perceived dirty hits right? anyway i got my popcorn ready.

    • strictlythedanks - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:12 PM

and dallas is going to have to deal with a world of pain.

Karma will be dished out, benns got a elbow to his temple comin right up I can only hope.

      • mp1131211 - Jan 19, 2014 at 4:46 PM

I doubt it. You never know, but Wild play best when they focus on scoring. They are in a fight for their post-season life. If they knew what was good for them, they would let Dallas take the penalties on Tuesday and focus on winning. Cooke seems to be OK, anyway… I hope.

      • strictlythedanks - Jan 19, 2014 at 5:53 PM

mp i totally agree with you, just giving 95buttercups a taste of her own medicine

  10. hardkor07mn - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:15 PM

I’m not saying Cooke is an angel by any means. Frankly he’s a D bag but you have to call it both ways. If someone wants to knock him out, feel free but expect consequences.

  11. stcrowe - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:23 PM

This is like when prison guards let prisoners beat other loathsome prisoners. When asked by their supervisors to report on the beatings, they respond with, “I didn’t see anything.”

  12. nicofthenorthstar - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:33 PM

Disgusting. That, folks, is what we call a double standard. Perhaps, like DB in LA, the C on his sweater is worth a little more than most people know.

  13. rgledz - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:36 PM

Apparently you can illegally hit Wild players as much as you want without any discipline whatsoever. Whether it be Bouchard or Brodin last year or Granlund, Backstrom and Cooke this year. It just doesn’t matter to Shanny. Do what you want to the Wild boys…….it’s a free for all. Weak.

    • strictlythedanks - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:13 PM

      shame on the nhl

  14. sjsharks66 - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:46 PM

Clear and deliberate hit to the head. I guess the number on the jersey works both ways. I feel like if Torres was hit like this there would be no suspension either.

    • strictlythedanks - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:13 PM

yup, f the nhl and their terrible inconsistency

  15. joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:26 PM

OMG! Clearly an acting job by Cooke. No part of Benn’s body connect with the head of Cooke. Don’t you think MC would have went after Benn if it was a head shot?

    • mp1131211 - Jan 19, 2014 at 4:43 PM

is this a serious post or total sarcasm? I normally avoid commenting on your bizarre content, but you’ve got to be kidding, right???

      • joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 5:28 PM

I see you prefer commenting on comments where the bible is referenced. Please continue.

      • mp1131211 - Jan 19, 2014 at 5:53 PM

You are one weird dude, Joey. You cram anti-fighting propaganda down everyone’s throat and then when someone takes a head shot and does not engage in fighting, you stand back and pat the NHL on the back for doing nothing, which promotes players fighting to police the game.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I think you are a total fraud and paid to post here by the NHL. Corporations are known to plant commenters on internet articles to promote them in a good light. This isn’t some big conspiracy theory, this is industry standard, modern day brand management. Have you EVER said one negative thing about the NHL? Its why you have so many usernames which all agree with you and the NHL over and over and over.

All you did during the lockout was shout that it’s “over it’s over it’s over” countless times getting people’s hopes up and keeping them waiting for the next piece of positive news.

You bash any player who disagrees with the NHL’s position on just about anything and incessantly promote the NHL’s agenda of anti-fighting.

      • joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 6:07 PM

If you truly believe everything you just wrote, then how am I weird? Gotta run! Need to deposit my NHL cheque. ;-)

      • mp1131211 - Jan 19, 2014 at 7:40 PM

Let me rephrase that… you’ve created a mess of a cover character to plant your pro-NHL agenda.

  16. purpleguy - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:36 PM

Bad call, but in the end, the Stars lost and fall further back in the playoff race.

I missed something. Where did the gay reference come in?

    • mp1131211 - Jan 19, 2014 at 4:57 PM

9500000 cups said someone has gay parents

  21. nicofthenorthstar - Jan 19, 2014 at 6:10 PM

The point that a lot of folks (950nutcupsonchin, joey4idks#it) are missing is that players can change their game. Cooke has been a very valuable pick up for the Wild, and has played a very different game over the past couple years. He certainly earned his reputation but no longer plays that style of game.

  22. valente317 - Jan 19, 2014 at 7:53 PM

Benn’s arm was kept tight against his body as he made the hit. There was no extension of forearm or elbow until the follow-through, well after contact was made.

It was a hit to the head, and probably deserving of a fine, but I can’t see what all the fuss is about. Definitely not deserving of any sort of hearing, let alone actual suspension.
