Captain Canada: Sidney Crosby to wear the ‘C’ in Sochi

Jan 19, 2014, 11:20 AM EDT

In today’s least-surprising news, Sidney Crosby was named captain of Team Canada for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Crosby, who scored the gold medal-winning goal for Canada against the United States at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, is the best player on Canada’s roster and as well as captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The bigger news here would’ve been if he wasn’t named to lead the team.

Joining Crosby as leaders will be Team Canada’s alternate captains — Chicago’s Jonathan Toews and Nashville’s Shea Weber. Both players are captains of their NHL teams as well giving Canada numerous character guys to take charge.

If the Olympics were based on the number of captains on a roster, Canada would be a heavy favorite there as well.

    Let the bashing began.

    • isithockeyseasonyet - Jan 19, 2014 at 11:33 AM

I’m not saying you do and I’m not saying you’re wrong for this post, but your fellow penguin brethren troll just as hard as the pens haters

      • killerpgh - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:47 PM

Every team that has fan has useless one.

  2. pdmjr - Jan 19, 2014 at 11:28 AM

Was there really any choice? There would be rioting in Canada if he wasn’t.

    • mikebel11 - Jan 19, 2014 at 11:45 AM

No there would not be rioting. A large portion of Canadians don’t even like Crosby. I don’t know anyone who would have been disappointed had Toews or Weber been named captain instead. There would just be a hissy fit from Dumb Cherry.

      • c9castine - Jan 19, 2014 at 11:27 PM

a large portion? thats silly talk. i know a lot of people would be upset if that no-winning bum weber was captain.

it was probably something like 60-40 in favor of crosby as it should be. toews is great obviously he’s a proven captain. but so is sid, and he’s older, his spotlight has been MEGA bright for much longer and so he knows how to deal that much better, and he scored that goal for them last time and is in general a better player. makes sense.

    • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:49 PM

      Claude G

      • fbothharbaughs - Jan 20, 2014 at 6:22 AM

Claude G’s gotta make the roster, no?

    • joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:55 PM

Is Toews not also a Canadian? Oh! Wait! Of course he is. This is after the Canadian team. What a stupid comment pdmjr? Toews or Crosby. Both are very deserving of wearing the C for TC.

  3. lowenni - Jan 19, 2014 at 11:49 AM

I would’ve given the alternate to Keith instead of Weber.

  4. pitpenguinsrulez - Jan 19, 2014 at 11:53 AM

    Was a no brainer

    • thomasvanek - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:08 PM

Because no one used their head in the decision. Toews was the obvious choice.

      • joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:56 PM

How is Toews more deserving than Crosby? Why don’t you elaborate instead of just commenting of the sake of trolling.

      • comeonnowguys - Jan 19, 2014 at 3:31 PM

Crosby is the better player. Toews is the better captain. It’s amazing how people can’t seem to make that distinction.

      • c9castine - Jan 19, 2014 at 11:27 PM

and how would that distinction be made exactly? some people just talk out of their ass.

      • comeonnowguys - Jan 20, 2014 at 9:23 AM

Talking out my ass? Fine. Which captain has won more cups?

      • comeonnowguys - Jan 20, 2014 at 9:26 AM

Or, which captain actually won Best Forward in the last Olympics? It wasn’t Crosby.

      • c9castine - Jan 20, 2014 at 5:02 PM

you just declared your own simple mindedness by thinking that its as simple as toews has 2 cup and crosby 1. itso hard to win its ridiculous.

people can’t make up their mind. first the pens coach sucks, their goalie sucks, their defense sucks. now crosby just isn’t that great of a captain because he’s only one the hardest trophy in sports once at the age of 26.

ill never forget that little episode Toews had in the penalty box with, who was it, brent seabrook coming in to calm him down and get him refocused. i have never seen that with Crosby.

he had 3 goals, 11 assists in 23 games winning last year. good numbers, i suppose. jarome iginla had 12 points in 15 games last year and that was basically in 2 series as nobody scored for us in the ECF.

good leader obviously but I’m sick of people talking about him like he’s mark messier or mario lemieux.

  5. davidsmj22 - Jan 19, 2014 at 11:55 AM

I thought diving was in the Summer Olympics?

    • buysamadrink - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:31 PM

Quick witted, for sure. Now you just need to watch some hockey, and then you’ll be able to post intelligently.

    • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:29 PM

He wears the CAPTAIN Cu## label all year so why should this be any different

      • fbothharbaughs - Jan 20, 2014 at 6:26 AM

Claude G still “the best player in the world”?

  6. ovi8hull16 - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:00 PM

Ok cool… Now I wonder who is captaining the Men’s team?

  7. pavelfitzgerald - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:24 PM

There would not have been any rioting. A large faction of Canadians would have liked to seen Jonathan Toews been the captain but you can’t argue with Crosby being the captain since he is the best player in the world (diving, crying & all)

  8. Stiller43 - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:26 PM

Maybe a “large portion,” but certainly not the majority.

    • mikebel11 - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:05 PM

Yup, that’s why I said large portion and not majority. It was either him or Toews and regardless of who got it there would definitely not be any rioting. The closest thing would be a senile old man whining about it on TV and then a bunch of people who don’t understand or watch hockey agreeing with him.

      • mikebel11 - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:09 PM

Who wears the C really doesn’t matter when your team is made up of 6 captains and 9 assistants from their nhl clubs

  9. shaundre93 - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:30 PM

This honestly has nothing to do with how I feel about Crosby… but I think Toews should have been el capitano. He is definitely one of if not the best leader in the league

    • joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:58 PM

What do you base you argument on? Easier to say than to justify your comment. Eh!

      • shaundre93 - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:31 PM

Its not that I think Crosby is a bad choice, but towes has already captained 2 cups and is widely considered the best captain in the NHL. He’s physical, can be a rah rah guy and can lead by example. Also he has a reputation of being a winner, not a whiner. Im not trashing sid but I don’t think he should be captain just cause he’s the best player. What do you base your argument off other than that Crosby is the best player?

      • joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:45 PM

Toews is widely considered as the best by whom? Mario Lemieux was with Pitt and saw Crosby’s first strides in the NHL, and was a big part of naming Crosby captain. Matter of fact Crosby turned down the C when it was offered to him after his rookie season. So, he was already showing signs of being a good leader during his rookie year. Personally, and as I wrote below, Toews and Crosby are both deserving of the C. TC would have been in good hand with Toews as well. I was ok with either one being captain before the announcement. You could make a case for either one.

    • joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 3:10 PM

Toews won 2 cups, and Crosby was the youngest captain ever to lead his team to a SC championship. Like either one is worthy of the C.

      • comeonnowguys - Jan 19, 2014 at 3:32 PM

Younger than Toews by mere months.

  10. benrob99 - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:44 PM

Suck it haters. Crosby will go ahead and lead Canada to another gold medal… then he’ll continued to be boo’ed by you morons that live in igloos.

That’s OK. we’ll celebrate him in Pittsburgh (as well as anywhere else that doesn’t have their heads buried in their ice holes) as exactly what he is: The UNDISPUTED best hockey player in the world.

    • killerpgh - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:08 PM

Hopefully he doesn’t win Gold. Screw Crosby when he put on the Canadian jersey. After the last Olympics the 1st game was a home game against the Sabres and the Pens did a little tribute for all the players from both teams who played in the Olympic. Ryan Miller got the loudest cheer and you could hear fans booing when the the showed Crosby scoring the “golden goal”.

      • Hockeyfan - Jan 19, 2014 at 6:08 PM

Do you really need it pointed out to you that it was an American crowd cheering more loudly for their American Olympians and booing The Canadian who won? You get that, right??????

    • laxman1944 - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:58 PM

      YOU suck it “Ben”

Crosby is a lousy Captain and a poor leader…….This is a KNOWN thing.

Only reason he is named is because he is (unfortunently/force fed down everybodies throat) the face of The NHL

      • joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:00 PM

Ok! Why is he a lousy Captain and poor leader? Tell us. I just can’t wait to hear your argument.

      • laxman1944 - Jan 19, 2014 at 3:09 PM

LOL……Look at his behavior in the playoffs.

        Take off you blinders

      • joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 3:18 PM

Of course… NHL teams select their leaders based on how they do in the playoffs. It has nothing to do with what they do off the ice…. Moron!

“That dynamic, of being the conduit between coaches and players, is a very slippery slope. The captain will be held to a higher standard, and quite frankly most players can’t deal with that kind of stress. That’s why there is only one captain. And that’s why picking him is such an ordeal for teams to go through. He has to convey their message on a delay on basis, while playing spy, constantly reporting back to the enemy camp. Leaders ship is a bizarre intangible; there’s no set guidelines to follow when selecting a captain. Each team has its own rationale for picking their guy to lead the rank and file. And if there is drama brewing within the rank and file, it’s up to the captain to convey that intelligence back to the coaches. They need to know about it so that they can address it. Little things lead to big things in locker rooms, and they need a mole on the inside who can keep them up to speed on everything go on. Sound crazy? Welcome to the world of an NHL captain.”

“Crosby is a lousy Captain and a poor leader…….This is a KNOWN thing.”

Known only to internet trolls who can’t be bother to watch an actual game or look at a stat sheet. Getting hockey advice from people who refer to Crosby as “Cindy” is like getting business advice from a squeegee kid.

  11. dontbsuchapuss - Jan 19, 2014 at 12:55 PM

Imagine that better give Cindy her way so she doesn’t cry foul. God forbid he isn’t a headline story it’s bad enough half the commentators would have his child. He is a great player but it makes you throw up the way he is talked about and the way he cries to the linesman when he isn’t liking the way the game is going.

    • joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:01 PM

It never ceases to amaze me how YOU supposedly adults use childish name calling to make a point. Makes me wonder who the child really is.

  12. hallforpresident - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:06 PM

Bob Mackenzie put it this way right before the season started: if it isn’t Crosby for captain, it’s a story. Just a sideshow distraction that nobody wants. Either way Crosby is a worthy choice.

  13. hockeyflow33 - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:10 PM

How many guys on this team could wear the C with no issues? 7 or 8 guys at least!

    • joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:03 PM

What’s your point? It came down to two players. Toews or Crosby. Who cares if there were 3 are 20 worthy of wearing the C.

      • hockeyflow33 - Jan 19, 2014 at 4:33 PM

Are you asking wy I left a comment on a comment section or why an entire team of leaders is a good thing?

      • joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 5:08 PM

Was that your point? There are a bunch of leaders but only one will be “The Leader” and he and only he will assume all the responsibilities that is awarded to the captain.

      • Lupy Nazty Philthy - Jan 20, 2014 at 5:45 AM

His point wasn’t that hard to figure out… unless you act like a tween who’s mad Crosby got picked over the guy he wanted.

Team Canada is loaded with tons of leadership. There’s a bunch of guys who could have been captains before.

As of right now Crosby, Toews, Getzlaf, Benn, Weber and Tavares are captains on their respective teams. Nash and Luongo have both been captains in the past.

Stamkos, Bergeron, Perry, Keith, Sharp, Kunitz, Marleau, Pietrangelo are all alternate captains on their team. Many of them could be captains too, if they weren’t already on teams with good captains.

Even guys who didn’t make team Canada are captains. Any injuries and Canada can call St Louis, Giroux, Staal, Spezza, Thornton to the Olympic team.

        No country even comes close.

  14. tru2joelu4eva - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:30 PM

    crosboner!

  15. sjsharks66 - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:49 PM

I am surprised Bergeron was not an alternate. Crosby being captain is just obvious. Canada loves the kid!

  16. tcclark - Jan 19, 2014 at 1:55 PM

He’s clearly the best player on the team, but I hate the idea that the best player on the team should be captain which is the case too often in the NHL. Personally, I would go for the older veteran type. Those guys tend to be the most respected players in the locker room, but unfortunately Yzerman left most of those guys off the team. Guys like Joe Thornton and Marty St. Louis would have been better choices in my opinion, but they didn’t make the roster.

I think Crosby’s too “love him or hate him” of a player. I think Toews would have been a safer choice. There seem to be less people that hate him and the team is made up of mostly Western Conference guys who see Toews more than they see Crosby. He’s also won two Stanley Cups with teams that have had high expectations so he can handle the pressure. Recently Crosby hasn’t been able to say the same.

  17. joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:05 PM

Dean Blais, Former Head Coach of the CBJ

“It all starts with your captain, who are your leaders. You can’t make leaders, you either have them or you don’t. All it takes are a couple of bad apples to ruin the whole barrel. Sometimes as a coach, you know you have a championship-caliber team, but without that chemistry and winning attitude, you won’t win. You need your leaders to keep everybody in line.”

  18. andyisfat - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:11 PM

Cindy would have gotten her panties in a bunch if she was not handed the “C”. Toews is the real leader and is mature enough to let the sissy have her way.

    • joey4id - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:28 PM

Why are your panties in a bunch?

      • handsofsweed - Jan 19, 2014 at 2:55 PM

This all you here from most commenters when it comes to Crosby or anything Penguins related:

  21. Hockeyfan - Jan 19, 2014 at 4:09 PM

Puzzling where posters get their “knowledge ” like Crosby not being liked in Canada. Really? Or the long held complaints of Crosby whining when he clearly is way past that. It’s just posters hanging on to their own crap. And that Crosby would have been upset if not chosen for the C? Crosby puts the game before himself, puts his team before himself, and has put a respectable face on the world of hockey. Sounds like a leader
Now that said, Toews would have also been an outstanding choice for those same reasons.
Those who chose must think Crosby will have the team’s ear.

    • narfmoo12 - Jan 19, 2014 at 5:17 PM

From back when ESPN covered hockey….

      http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?page=0809playersurvey

52% of players said that Crosby is the biggest crybaby in the NHL.

…Also, Crosby has less Cups than Toews, but still is captain. He got his linemate over his archenemy (Giroux). He got the biggest story of the team (St. Louis is 38, led the NHL in points last year, was snubbed in 2010) not selected. Seems like he did quite a bit of whining and crying this year.

      • Hockeyfan - Jan 19, 2014 at 5:59 PM

Survey was Feb of 2009. Who won the cup that year?
Yes. It is all a conspiracy. Crosby has all the power and can get what ever he wants.
Not that Crosby has more international experience or Kunitz earned his spot and that Giroux
Just wasn’t good enough earlier this year. I am certain it is all the mighty power of Crosby.
Agree that St. Louis is a big miss.

At least we now know what the “C” stands for.

  25. eagles512 - Jan 19, 2014 at 11:08 PM

I really think there were better choices. He’s still a bit petulant and immature, although I admit he’s by far the best player in the world. Then again, does a C on a jersey really matter?

  26. cspsrbums - Jan 20, 2014 at 12:06 AM

Who really cares if he wears a C

  27. cspsrbums - Jan 20, 2014 at 12:08 AM

I am sorry I guess it is the 1st time a girl is the captain of the men’s hockey team

  28. Lupy Nazty Philthy - Jan 20, 2014 at 6:04 AM

Kind of funny (or is it sad?) how upset people get over this stuff. What a waste of energy. It’s SO arbitrary who they make captain on Team Canada. The locker room is literally FULL of captains and team leaders. It really doesn’t matter who got the “C”.

Crosby was the obvious choice, seeing as he’s Canada’s best player. The best player usually gets the “C” in situations like this. Even Mark Messier was 2nd fiddle to Wayne Gretzky, and Mess is still considered one of the best captains ever in the NHL.

And the choice doesn’t mean Toews is a worse captain like the hyperbole-brained morons make it out to be. In situations like this, 9 times out of 10 they go with the best player (not the best captain). Whether you like it or not, that player IS Crosby. Doesn’t mean Toews isn’t good too. Mark Messier and Steve Yzerman were 2nd fiddle to Wayne Gretzky too and they’re considered two of the best NHL captains of all time. These things happen, so calm down people.

  29. rainyday56 - Jan 20, 2014 at 6:57 AM

Too many chiefs, not enough firemen: TC ‘s achilles heel since 1972.

  30. kpom1 - Jan 20, 2014 at 2:29 PM

Toews would have been a bolder choice. He has twice as many Stanley Cup rings since both were named captain of their respective teams in 2009. His teams also handle adversity better (coming back in 2010 against the Preds, 2013 down 3-1 to the Wings, and even forcing Game 7 in 2011 after falling behind Vancouver 3-0), while Crosby’s teams have fallen flat once getting behind in a playoff series. Also, in 2010, Toews was +9 while Crosby was +2, despite Toews having just 1 more point (8) than Crosby (7). That means that while Crosby scored a lot, he also was on the ice a lot when the other team scored. Crosby is a better player, but Toews is more well-rounded and a better leader.
