After Cooke hit, Yakupov undergoing concussion protocol

Jan 17, 2014, 7:00 PM EDT

Nail Yakupov is undergoing treatment for a concussion after leaving Thursday’s 4-1 loss to Minnesota following a hit from Wild forward Matt Cooke, the Oilers announced on Friday.

Here’s the incident in question, which occurred with about one minute remaining in the second period (the hit is at the start of the clip):

Yakupov left immediately and didn’t return, sitting out the entire third period. The Edmonton Journal notes that, during his postgame presser, Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins didn’t offer up any health news regarding Yakupov, but did classify the play as a “bad turnover.”

Edmonton next plays tomorrow in Winnipeg, a 2 p.m. ET matinee.

Not a fan of Cooke at all. But, her certainly didn’t do anything wrong there. Just unfortunate that Yakupov smacked his head into the boards.

As much as I would love to bash Cooke I did’t see anything dirty about that play !

Eugene Melnyk wants a forensic investigation done on this hit.

It was a “bad turnover”, Yakupov is just standing still stick handling and somehow doesn’t think he’s going to get hit. Oilers ruined him, he clearly should have developed more.

If you’re going to be a star…you’ll be a star. Developing the player is just an excuse people make when someone can’t cut it in the big time.
