Sens owner: ‘We’re not New Jersey, we don’t play a boring brand of hockey’

In the wake of today’s big announcements from Ottawa — GM Bryan Murray re-upping on a new deal, promotions for Pierre Dorion and Randy Lee, announcing the team is ready to deal — owner Eugene Melnyk decided to get in on the action as well.

From the Ottawa Citizen:

“It’s definitely an important day, the fact that (Bryan Murray) signed for two years and another two (as an adviser to hockey operations). That continuity is a very, very important thing to have. And that stability. With Randy and Pierre, it’s exactly the same thing.”

Melnyk was also hoping the improved play of the team, coupled with the stability within the front office, would boost ticket sales at the Canadian Tire Centre.

“We’re not New Jersey,” he said. “We don’t play a boring brand of hockey.”

Oh, Gene.

This isn’t the first time Melnyk’s made an inflammatory comment toward another organization. He ripped Matt Cooke and the Penguins following the Erik Karlsson injury — calling Cooke a “goon” before questioning why he was employed — and ripped “profane” Penguins fans during last year’s playoffs.

      Toronto doesn’t need a downgrade.

In fairness you can’t set the bar much lower than it presently is.

Last time his “wannabe 3 time cup champs” visited NJ they wobbled back on the bus after getting spanked 5-2..

I’ll bet that was REALLY boring

Reminds me of Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder. Just stop talking. I love seeing vocal owners….but your making yourself look like a clown.

You don’t play a WINNING brand of hockey either..

    • tdrusher225 - Jan 13, 2014 at 11:41 PM

Hate to take cheap shots, but the Devils are a team and an organization that is a shell of what it once was. This isn’t 2003 anymore, they don’t play winning hockey. They’ve been out of the 2nd round once in the last 10 years and haven’t qualified for the playoffs 2 out of the last 3 years. They don’t suck or anything, but they haven’t been a “gold standard” team for a long time. Although, I will admit I’m a bit biased because I do hate their boring, maddening, and outdated style of play.

      • dburlew - Jan 14, 2014 at 10:20 AM

Perhaps you ought to watch a few NJ Devils games… the reign of Lemaire is over. They have a heavy 2-1-2 forecheck system. Same system that took them to the 2012 Stanley Cup. When’s the last time Ottawa went to the cup? ’06-07 right? And that’s been the franchises only appearance. Gone are the days of sitting 4 at their own blue line. Granted they’re still a great defensive hockey team, and in all fairness they need to be. But the trap hasn’t been around since the 1990’s… Hockey fans need to get over it already.

  7. penguins87and71 - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:07 PM

The Devils system is boring. I can’t even watch the Devils play when they play the Penguins let alone when they don’t play my favorite team. This is why I didn’t watch the Stanley Cup Final a few years ago and this is why I won’t watch the outdoor game they play VS the Rangers. I don’t know but I just can’t watch 1-0 and 2-1 hockey games especially when the trap is involved.

    • downwithbettman - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:58 PM

Would you rather watch a 7-5 game or a 2-1 game?

      • barkar942 - Jan 13, 2014 at 11:17 PM

I would just rather just watch a game that is exciting. A 0-0 game can be more exciting than a 8-7 game, perhaps just in a different way. It is exciting to see a great goalie matchup battle all game not to give up a goal, and other times it is great to watch fantastic end to end rushes by a great skating defenseman and it ends up in the net. The game has so many great moments and so many are different. Watching Zuccarello go into the corner last night, get the puck away from the Flyer player and make a tape to tape pass on the backhand blind to Brassard all while falling on his butt is part of what makes the game so great.
Trap hockey sucked the life right out of the game and needs to stay where it belongs, as a dark stain on the glorious game. Too many games spent watching the Rangers and Devils battle like dogs and whoever got lucky and scored first then just trapped the game to a grinding halt.
So to answer your question, downwithbettman, BOTH!

      • 950003cups - Jan 14, 2014 at 2:08 AM

I would rather NOT see my goalie give up 7 goals. No thanks. You like high scores? Watch basketball. Coming from the fans of a team who broke the most goals against in a playoff game. Maybe if Fleury didn’t give up 10 goals in a single at off game, you would have more than one cup in he last 20 years with stacked talent. Next time you’re in the playoffs BS the Flyers, I’ll be very excited to see you give up another dozen goals in a game. As will you, apparently.

    • 950003cups - Jan 14, 2014 at 1:53 AM

Most Pittysburgh fans hate watching Devils Penguins match ups. LOL.

Maybe if you beat us once in a while, it would be more exciting.

      LOSER

    • calibabe712 - Jan 16, 2014 at 12:46 AM

Glad you weren’t watching on New Years Eve when we kicked your Penguins asses because they didn’t really think there would be a problem beating us. You most likely didn’t watch us beat Montreal last night either especially in the 3rd period when we put on a clinic for the Habs.

I can take you not watching us. People thought we didn’t have much either in 2012 but we managed to make it to the 6th game of the Stanley Cup finals. I would rather everyone discount us because we always manage to surprise people.

  8. jimhockey - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:07 PM

He’s absolutely right. As a Devils fan for more years than I want to admit, I’ve had the dubious privelege of not only watching my team generate less offense than any team in the league over the last decade, but also ALLOWING the least offense by visiting teams. Boring isn’t a strong enough word. Long ago, Lou Lamariello decided you could be competitive in every game if you played 59 1/2 minutes of defense and dragged visiting teams down to your level, which is the main reason the league implemented so many of their recent changes.

I go to games – or watch games – to see world-class skill – not an unending stream of journeymen grinders who we’ve never heard of until the Devils trade for them.

    • downwithbettman - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:56 PM

So if you hate how the Devils play why not jump on another teams bandwagon? heard the Ducks are doing pretty good.

      • tdrusher225 - Jan 13, 2014 at 11:29 PM

Gimme a break bro. Just because it’s his team doesn’t mean he’s obligated to like or not be allowed to criticize their style of play.

  9. showtyme21 - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:08 PM

    Yea

  10. showtyme21 - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:11 PM

Yea he’s so right… Being in the finals 5 times and winning the cup 3 of those times is soooooo boring compared to a big goose egg!!!! Oh u went to one final….and lost it???? …. BORING!!!!

  11. mshantz22 - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:12 PM

I think this guy is my 2nd least favorite owner behind only Chuck Wang.

  12. crazemastercraze - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:17 PM

Three cups in ten years. How many rings you got? Idiot

    • ruthlessandtoothless - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:41 PM

The game was different back then. It worked then but now its just a team stuck in their past identity and not adjusting to the way the game has changed.

      • idonthavethebloodyoucrave - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:58 PM

Uh, they were just in the Stanley Cup Finals two years ago …

        /facepalm

      • ruthlessandtoothless - Jan 13, 2014 at 10:04 PM

the 7th seed flyers made the finals in 2010 with Michael Leighton and Brian Boucher as their goalies and Lukas Krajicek and Ryan Parent playing nearly every game on defence. None of them are in the NHL anymore. Bad teams can make runs sometimes.

      • dburlew - Jan 14, 2014 at 10:25 AM

And the devils played an uptempo forecheck game that took them to that cup… And still continue to do so under DeBoer.

  13. strictlythedanks - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:33 PM

Hes really putting his neck out here, as he displays in the picture.

  14. thesportsjudge - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:52 PM

After cooking his books, apparently his brain was next on the list.

  15. downwithbettman - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Isn’t this the same guy that was whining about Alfredsson leaving? He really needs to keep his mouth shut. Alfie left Ottawa to have a shot at winning a cup. So the Devils might play a boring style of hockey, but that playing style has led them to more Stanley Cups then the Sens have appearances. He’s an ignorant guy and needs to keep his mouth shut and let the teams play. He’s the only owner in the entire NHL that has to criticize everybody. He’s a hypocrite.

  16. joeio17 - Jan 13, 2014 at 10:17 PM

So the sens owner would rather playing losing hockey then boring hockey like the New Jersey Devils? How are you going to knock a team that consistently wins, when your team hasn’t won a cup in god knows when. Just remember buddy 95 00 03. 3 cups in 10 years. Missed the playoffs what 2 years out of last 18 seasons. This guy should be talking all that trash.

  17. illashell - Jan 13, 2014 at 10:19 PM

Melnyk is a total buffoon. I wonder how his ‘forensic investigation’ into Matt Cooke is going?.

  18. buysamadrink - Jan 13, 2014 at 10:28 PM

Here’s a plan Gene. Hire a forensic specialist to analyze the trap. Then commission a sleep study for the forensic specialist.  Then, find a way to blame Matt Cooke for the Devil’s style of play.

  19. joey4id - Jan 13, 2014 at 10:42 PM

There is at least one thing NJ has over Ottawa that is not boring. Politics. The corruption from years past to the current bridgegate. :-)

  20. ducksk - Jan 13, 2014 at 11:04 PM

Hey, Geno STFU. Why bash another team? No one cares about you or Sens. What have you EVER won? Loser.

  21. pitpenguinsrulez - Jan 14, 2014 at 12:30 AM

I do very much agree with him being that New Jersey is a very boring team!

  22. 950003cups - Jan 14, 2014 at 1:57 AM

This dude owns a hockey team and hasn’t noticed that the Devils are now an up tempo team? He’s stuck in the 90’s. It’s no wonder he owns a Canadian hockey franchise that’s losing money. He’s clueless. Is he aware that his team sucks?

  23. rainyday56 - Jan 14, 2014 at 3:45 AM

Melnyk doesn’t know what he ‘s talking about. His Sens have been “”Devils Lite ” for years with their defence and counter attack style and their cheaper by the dozen “off the rack” red and black unis. ;)

  24. csilojohnson - Jan 14, 2014 at 7:01 AM

Kind of like the trap game played in the GW bridge..

  25. toiletclown - Jan 14, 2014 at 7:24 AM

devils are the number 1 most boring team in nhl history

  26. westinpat - Jan 14, 2014 at 9:24 AM

This guy sure does seem to talk a lot.

  27. calibabe712 - Jan 16, 2014 at 12:54 AM

Here I thought only the NFL had douchebag owners…..well the NHL can now join the dubious list of jackasses that run their mouths when their teams haven’t won ZIP in how long?

You keep bashing NJ…we will keep beating you and making you look like the gigantic douche you are.
