Back on track? Rangers top Flyers for third consecutive win

Jan 12, 2014, 9:48 PM EDT

Earlier on Sunday, New York Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault said that he believes Henrik Lundqvist is “back on track,” according to the Bergen Record’s Andrew Gross. Some onlookers might ask the same question about the Rangers after seeing them take their third win in a row by beating the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 on NBCSN.

It’s not the only positive trend for the up-and-down Rangers, either.

The Blueshirts have also won six of their last eight (6-1-1) and eight of 11 (8-2-1) contests. Overall, they’re now at 24-20-3 after beating the comparably hot Flyers (23-19-4, just three losses since Dec. 23 including tonight).

They’re also 4-0-1 in their last five home games, which is definitely a promising sign considering how long things sagged during grimmer stretches at Madison Square Garden.

There were some nice goals, no doubt,* but many will be excited by the increased “fight” they saw from the Rangers. That included an end-of-the-game scrum and also this bout between Daniel Carcillo and Luke Schenn:

The Rangers jumped above the Flyers for third in the jarringly inconsistent Metropolitan Division, but if these two teams – not to mention the surging New York Islanders – show us anything, it’s that it’s probably not safe to assume much.

Although they’ll probably fight each other a lot either way.

The fight was Carcillo and LUKE Schenn…

    • valoisvipers - Jan 12, 2014 at 10:10 PM

You’re right psudu and Brayden fought Moore.
      Make it right O’B.

    • James O'Brien - Jan 12, 2014 at 10:36 PM

Thanks for that, I got my Schenns crossed.

  2. President Charles Logan - Jan 12, 2014 at 10:06 PM

anyone see how much of a nancy boy brayden schenn looked like when he was trying to throw punches at the buzzer ? looked like he couldnt even get his hand into the slap position as he took a good punch right to the kisser …. him and his brother are a couple of pusssies

    • phillyphanatic77 - Jan 12, 2014 at 10:24 PM

Dude just shut upyou just hate Schenn(s), he could’ve easily pounded the top of his head, but where’s the sportsmanship in that? Did you see tye other “nancy boy” knock the stuffing out of a seasoned fighter and rat, Carcillo.

Flyers made a huge mistake not starting Mason to bounce him back. I have zero faith in Emery right now and Mason was stellar in his last start against the blueshirts. Other than that the Flyers played like losers and Lundqvist had his typical all-world showing against the Flyers. Looks like no ones running away w they 2-3.spots in the Metro.

      • therooneyskilledwebster - Jan 12, 2014 at 10:31 PM

I was too busy watching Boyle hang on for his life and turtle in expectation of Simmonds onslaught.

      • President Charles Logan - Jan 13, 2014 at 3:45 AM

Wait a sec 77…. did you just actually say Luke Schenn won the fight vs Carcillo? .. man oh man that orange Kool Aid that you slurp down each night must be really diluted with some bad tap water …….

I see the real Flyers are finally back after this weekend lol

      • phillyphanatic77 - Jan 14, 2014 at 3:21 PM

Pres you must be blind, Schenn tossed him around like a rag-doll rat… take a little re-watch…

    • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Jan 12, 2014 at 11:36 PM

Logan your a joke and show consistently why not to mention your name says it all. You’ve obviously have never been in a fight. Have someone put their head against your chest and tie your arms up and tell me how hard it is to hit them with power. You got a hard on when it comes to trashin the schenn’s. I love how you don’t touch on when Luke beat the hell outta carcillo. You need to pick a team to root for and stop trolling flyers pages. You sound like a idiot

      • President Charles Logan - Jan 13, 2014 at 3:50 AM

showing your frustration after a couple thrashings on the scoreboard I see…. what excuse you going to use?….. no Matt Read in the line up ?

    • jpelle82 - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:13 AM

brayden certainly got the eye gouge in though, no one seemed to notice that huh? ended the “fight” pretty quickly, moore went right down after that…and who could blame him

  3. biffnasty - Jan 12, 2014 at 10:07 PM

Another solid win. Great team effort

  4. eagles512 - Jan 12, 2014 at 10:35 PM

As a flyers fan who liked Carcillo, I can’t believe how Schenn handled him.

    • President Charles Logan - Jan 13, 2014 at 3:57 AM

handled him how? by landing a couple flaring “punches” to the back of his helmet? .. you’re an idiot and you’re Beagles stink to loser

      • goodolejr - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:49 AM

If you’re gonna consistently troll, the least you can do is work on your grammar. “…and you’re Beagles stink to loser.” Come on, dude.

      • President Charles Logan - Jan 13, 2014 at 12:45 PM

Ive always been amused of the word troll , the fact that if someone comes onto a post and doesnt 100% agree with a couple of people then he automatically gets branded with the “troll” title….. my advice to you … grow thicker skin

      • goodolejr - Jan 13, 2014 at 4:07 PM

It has nothing to do with someone disagreeing. It’s the childish name calling that comes with it that makes you a troll. All of your posts are just to simply annoy people and be a jerk off. I enjoy having discussions with people who have different opinions, it’s when people feel the need to flex their internet muscles that it becomes annoying. And judging by the fact that you’re probably the one thumbs down to my comment, I’m not the only one who feels this way.

By the way, I’m not paying your toll.

      • goodolejr - Jan 13, 2014 at 4:20 PM

  5. sjsharks66 - Jan 12, 2014 at 10:42 PM

Schenn really did man handle Carcillo. The one thing I did not like was the punch Hartnell threw at Carcillo towards the end. If Hartnell was going to fight him, then it is fine. Except right after the punch he ran away. Once everyone came in Carcillo, Hartnell ran right back in at Carcillo.

There are a handful of players on the Flyers that never hesitate to drop the gloves. Hartnell always acts like a punk when it comes to fighting players with experience.

Anyways, besides that incident the Flyers showed their skill in toughness and grit. While the Rangers decided to score goals on a net minder that should have been pulled after the first two goals went in. The Flyers would have had a better chance of winning with Mason in the net.

    • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Jan 12, 2014 at 11:17 PM

You just showed how long you’ve been watchin hockey with that hartnell reference. He got pulled away first off and second off he’s the one of the last person in this league to walk away from a fight. I can’t remember him losing a fight and he fights the toughest no matter what. Your a bitter pens fan lovin to jump to conclusions and make something outta nothing. Your just pissed your girly sharks don’t play with grit like the flyers. Not one player on this team shys away from a fight

      • magicrat13 - Jan 13, 2014 at 6:46 AM

looked to me like simmonds had his chance to fight carcillo a couple of times but refused…but he was willing to fight boyle who despite his size, is not a fighter…so maybe they don’t shy away, but they definitely pick and choose…

      • moarjam - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:09 AM

I noticed that too…I normally like Hartnell but he and carcillo started the whole thing up and then Hartnell just skates away and comes back when there are two flyers and a ref in between them. He then starts grappling with Moore but has to have Schenn step in to actually fight him.

Its not how he normally plays but he was definitely not backing up his behavior.

      • cofran2004 - Jan 13, 2014 at 10:54 AM

        I’m sorry… a guy who’s handle is sjsharks66 is a bitter pens fan? er… what?

  6. crazemastercraze - Jan 12, 2014 at 11:02 PM

So easy to get under flyboy skins. Thanks Dan

  7. broadstreetsbaddest88 - Jan 12, 2014 at 11:46 PM

The rangers looked real good. They looked like a totally different team then earlier in the year. They were fast and quick passing and scoring. Henrik killed us like usual. Flyers defense played horrendous. They couldn’t stop a 12 year old tonight. Rangers constantly were walkin the puck into the net. Emery shouldnt of played and should of got pulled in the first ten minutes. I can’t stand when Berube keeps them in when they’re gettin lit up. I was fine with the lightning loss but this one was irritating to watch. Flyers will bounce back from this and hopefully get right back into second place. It’s to tight a race to be losing these games. This division is gonna get interesting come March an April.

    • goodolejr - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:44 AM

I’m not really sure why this was thumbed down. I guess when you post a thought out analysis of the actual game instead of name calling and general trolling, nobody wants to see it.

I didn’t even watch this game and it was irritating just to watch the score updates on my phone haha. Flyers need to fix their defense. The fact that Berube has gotten the forwards to start back checking and helping out on defense has helped put a band-aid on the awful play of the actual defensemen. One or two guys seem to have a decent game here and there but they’re just too slow and not really that good overall. As much as it hurts me to admit, this team is nowhere near a contender with the defense they’re putting on the ice. A playoff team, yes. A contender…unfortunately not. Hopefully they can do SOMETHING done by the deadline to at least get the ball rolling on fixing the D.

  8. sjsharks66 - Jan 12, 2014 at 11:52 PM

No one pulled Hartnell away… The linesman stood by while Hartnell skated away…

Your Orange blinders are on to tight again. I clearly said some Flyers never hesitate to drop the gloves. To say Hartnell will fight anyone has to be meant as a joke.. He didn’t even fight Carcillo at the end of the game!

    • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Jan 13, 2014 at 3:08 AM

The fact that your trying to convince yourself that hartnell runs from people is hilarious. Take a minute and watch his fights on YouTube and tell me he looks like a dude that has to cower from a fight. He doesn’t hide from anyone especially Carrillo. Not to mention they’re good buddy’s. He jumped in to back his teammates like anyone else does except your sharks. Anyone would agree with me that he’s no subban, he fights his battles and always sticks up for his teammates no matter what. You have shown again your an idiot and that you no nothing outside the pens and sharks franchise

      • moarjam - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:13 AM

He usually never backs away from anything…but he did last night…twice. I have no hate towards hartnell either I’m just calling it like I see it.

  9. cameltoews - Jan 13, 2014 at 12:24 AM

I was at the game tonight. Brayden Schenn should be expecting a chat with the league. He gouged john moore’s eye in the final scrum at the end of the game. That’s a dbag move. I have no problem w fighting but that’s ridiculous.

    • cofran2004 - Jan 13, 2014 at 10:58 AM

Not to mention when the fight was over, and Moore was down, he threw one more punch into the top of Moore’s head. I like the Schenn’s, but that was kind of lame. It was a nice game to be at though… It’s always fun to sing the goal song early and often :)

  10. nashernation - Jan 13, 2014 at 12:47 AM

Nasher is skating like a world class skater again and the King is back! Looking good in Ranger country. Fourth line continues to be exceptional.

  11. President Charles Logan - Jan 13, 2014 at 3:47 AM

Simmonds think’s he’s a tough guy all of a sudden .. someone will clean his ghetto clock eventually ….

    • toiletclown - Jan 13, 2014 at 6:29 AM

simmonds is a punk, and carcillo destroyed schenn

      • thephillyfanclub - Jan 13, 2014 at 7:56 AM

I think you need a second Flush

      • cofran2004 - Jan 13, 2014 at 11:05 AM

Holy crap! You have a post where you aren’t the only one liking it!

Simmonds… is what he is. Every team has one of him. They just aren’t usually as good at putting the puck in as he is. And to say carcillo destroyed schenn is a bit of a stretch… I’d call it a draw at best.

    • toiletclown - Jan 13, 2014 at 8:26 AM

i think you need to cheer for a real team like the pens

      • goodolejr - Jan 13, 2014 at 4:15 PM

A “real team” that needed the league to save them from bankruptcy because their “fans” paid no attention to them when they were bad? The same ones who have been favorites to win the cup a few years back and were bounced from the playoffs in the first round? The same ones who were swept by the Bruins last year while scoring a whopping 2 goals in the entire series?

      • goodolejr - Jan 13, 2014 at 4:17 PM

Oh and FYI, it’s people like you who make everyone hate Pens fans. I feel bad for the intelligent ones, as I’ve seen quite a few on here that I respect.

    • goodolejr - Jan 13, 2014 at 4:10 PM

Someone will clean his “ghetto” clock? Really? THIS is why you’re a troll, troll.

      • President Charles Logan - Jan 13, 2014 at 6:01 PM

you’re kind of new around here.. earn some credibility kid and tread lightly

    • goodolejr - Jan 14, 2014 at 9:12 AM

I’ve actually been here awhile, just don’t really comment as much as I don’t like to speak to grown men who speak like children. I actually kind of regretted my posts from yesterday as I’m not usually one to take part in negativity like that. Think I’ll just stick to using the “report comment” button for your posts from now on.

      Enjoy your day, el Presidente!

      • President Charles Logan - Jan 14, 2014 at 12:26 PM

maybe if i had posted something worth reporting i’d feel bad ….. but seeing how i dont.. im going to go ahead and proceed with calling you a whiney lil soccer mom biatch that i can easily rile up pretty much with the drop of a dime.
        happy reporting …

      • President Charles Logan - Jan 14, 2014 at 1:03 PM

I bet cleaning up after your parents while their at work is boring ….

      • goodolejr - Jan 14, 2014 at 1:07 PM

You have no idea. All they do is crap all over the house, it’s disgusting. And they make me clean it all up for being a “grown ass 27 year old man who still lives with his parents.” They threatened to take away my race car bed if I didn’t get the entire house cleaned by the time they get home. They’re not even giving me my allowance this time because I did such a horrible job last time.

        Life is just so unfair!

  12. eagles512 - Jan 13, 2014 at 8:19 AM

Handled him as in tossed him around like a rag doll. Maybe you should watch a game before commenting Logan.

    • President Charles Logan - Jan 13, 2014 at 1:07 PM

i did watch it anyone can grab a sweater of another player and swing them around if they are bigger .. whats the point were all trying to make here anyways? who won fights? .. worry about that swiss cheese defense and soon to be problematic goal tending before too long.. we all know it’s coming yall didnt start out with 2 wins in a month for nothing .

  13. johnstone17 - Jan 13, 2014 at 8:48 AM

So, after reading all the comments, a majority are worried about scoring the fights instead of discussing the only score that matters Rangers 4 Flyers 1. No points earned for winning, losing or tying a fight. Probably the best 2/3 rds of a game the Rangers played all year.

  14. stepanup - Jan 13, 2014 at 9:58 AM

You beat me to it Johnstone. The Rangers outskated, outhustled, outskilled the Flyers for the first 50 minutes, and all the Orange and Black care about is that the Flyers thugged it up in the last 10, when the game was already out of hand.

The Rangers forecheck was phenomenal, and directly led to Carcillo’s, Nash’s, and Brassard’s goals. It was great to see the players into it, and the fans loving the perfromance. Couldnt have asked for a better game.

But hey, at least Schenn (6’2″ 229 lb) handled Carcillo (6’0″ 200 lb). Too bad Carcillo already had scored the opener to set the tone.

    • johnstone17 - Jan 13, 2014 at 10:27 AM

Step, I expected nothing less from the West Camden Cretins when they went down 3-0. If we can’t beat you, we will out thug you. That theory went out the window almost 40 years ago. Doesn’t send a message, doesn’t prove anything. Even Zucc stands up for himself & he’s what? 5’6″?

      • stepanup - Jan 13, 2014 at 11:37 AM

Zucc’s assist was dirty. While being taken down slides it perfectly to Brassard? And finally Brassard unleashed one. Bullet.

    • cofran2004 - Jan 13, 2014 at 1:00 PM

Kreider engaged beast mode again this game. Maybe its just because I was watching it in person, and not just following what the camera shows… but he was always where he needed to be. His positional game has dramatically improved. His goal was a bit flukey (how many times havewe said THAT this year?), but when you play the way he has been, rubber just has a way of finding twine.

Also, I wasn’t for the carcillo trade, but after seeing him play… he’s a punk with some skill. That 4th line looked phenomenal.

Zucc’s pass to Brassard was even more impressive in person. The size difference between him and everyone is very evident, yet you wouldn’t know it. I really hope he doesn’t end up with Petr Prucha disease though…

Great game. Every time I go to the garden I leave elated. They’ve let to lose in my annual pilgrimmage. Nothing like a game in the city!

      • cofran2004 - Jan 13, 2014 at 1:01 PM

        YET to lose**

      • stepanup - Jan 13, 2014 at 2:03 PM

They’ve yet to win when I’ve made trip 😦. However, they’re undefeated when I’ve seen them in opposing barns. Glen, Alain, I can clear my schedule…

      • johnstone17 - Jan 13, 2014 at 2:25 PM

Free of the Tortorella verbal whippings, Kreider is really starting to come in to his own.

      • cofran2004 - Jan 13, 2014 at 2:35 PM

Yeah, tough love really isn’t for everyone. I’m telling you… he’s a bigger, stronger Callahan. The only thing I can see that Cally really does better is block shots and get back on defense. But he hits, and he scores both pretty and ugly. I’ve been high on this kid since he was playing on the junior USA squad. Glad he’s making me look smart… i feel like a lot of people gave up on him.

  15. eagles512 - Jan 13, 2014 at 10:12 AM

All I said was I was surprised Schenn handled him like that because the video was posted. Doesn’t mean I didn’t watch the rangers play a great game. They are a dangerous team. And the flyers never win in the garden so I hope this isn’t a playoff matchup.

  16. xdj511 - Jan 13, 2014 at 10:15 AM

The game wasn’t even as close as that 4-1 score would have you believe. The Rangers had numerous opportunities after the game was 4-0. There were a couple of goalposts hit and a couple of breakaways by Nash and Zucc that weren’t capitalized on. You have to give some credit to Emery for keeping it from becoming a total blowout.

    • jpelle82 - Jan 13, 2014 at 11:44 AM

i dont look at 4-1 and think it was close, i only watched part of it but i agree it was clearly a rout, hence the extracurriculars

  17. kastout11 - Jan 13, 2014 at 10:15 AM

I am a liflong Flyers fan, but living in NY, I only get to watch their games on MSG and NBC. They were thoroughly outplayed last night and faced a world class goaltender. Until last night, Henrik was the only Ranger that really concerned me, but after watching the game last night, that is the best I have seen the Rangers look all season. Aside from losing the fights, the Rangers won where it counts. Hopefully, the Flyers will bounce back on Tuesday against Buffalo.

  18. blackandorangeforlife - Jan 13, 2014 at 12:15 PM

Gotta love the Pens fans that dont comment after the Pens lose yet are always around for a Flyers loss…..And then they complain about Hartnell pulling a Sid by starting a fight then skating away…..They also complain about Simmonds no fighting
Well if the Pens are down do you want Sid,Malkin,Neal or Kuntitz fighting?….Sure lets take a teams leading goal scorer off the ice to appease trolls…..Did the Flyers start a scrap at the end?….Sure…How many suspensions did they get?
Also love the one comment above that said the Rangers outplayed the Flyers for 50 minutes….Funny considering the Flyers outs hot the Rangers 17-13 in the 1st then 15-7 in the third….That’s 32 shots in 10 minutes?….New NHL record i would guess
Neither team played any form of defense in the game….Hank stood on his head and that was the difference or this game could have ended with a score of 8-8
Also on the Schenn fronts…..Love the fact Luke drop the gloves to keep Simmonds on the ice (Again leading scorer) and tossed Carcillo around like a rag doll….And Brayden fighting a fighter?….What Pen would drop the Gloves with Moore?….Engelland?….Glass…..Dupuis?….Neal?…..Moore has at least twenty small lumps on his head right now and don’t think he is enjoying combing his hair!
Flyers lost but it’s not like they laid down for the Rags….How many times did the Flyers dominate the Rangers zone?….Great game and the best part was watching McGuire having to mute his own mic because of all the jawing from the benches….A trend i would like to see in every game played on NBC!

    • DED - Jan 13, 2014 at 12:37 PM

Ha! Yeah I saw McGuire do that, too.

    • johnstone17 - Jan 13, 2014 at 12:44 PM

Yup, woooo hoooo for the Cretin fans. You won a couple of fights & LOST the game. The loic is there for sure !!!!

whatever helps you sleep at night ya loser

    • President Charles Logan - Jan 13, 2014 at 1:10 PM

alls the pens do is win games …. there’s nothing more to really say about them … you guys on the other hand…….

      well… you know…..

    • cofran2004 - Jan 13, 2014 at 1:11 PM

Your interpretation of the flyers shot total meaning they carried play is a bit off. A lot of their shots were very low-percentage. Shots you’d expect someone like me to be able to stop about 70 percent of the time if I was playing in the NHL. I’m not saying Henrik didn’t play well… because he really did. But the rangers seemed to carry the play most of the game. If a lot of their shots had been on target, the shot totals would have been closer.

Also, since when is John Moore a fighter? chippy stay at home defenseman… not really a fighter though. Yeah, the flyers dominated the rangers zone several times. But the first two goals in the first period were a direct result of the flyers getting dominated in the defensive zone. The game was not as close as the shot total indicated.

    • whammy71 - Jan 13, 2014 at 1:41 PM

CaveMan hockey – entertaining the knuckle draggers for close to 40 years!

      • goodolejr - Jan 14, 2014 at 9:14 AM

Trust me, as a Flyers fan there is nothing I would love more than for them to lose the “Broad Street Bullies” mentality. I like the idea of a team that isn’t going to be pushed around but in today’s NHL you also need skill. I’m tired of seeing this team being dragged to the ground by management that’s still stuck in the 70s.

    • stepanup - Jan 13, 2014 at 2:06 PM

Looks like you already got plenty of attention. But, there were shifts where the Flyers carried play, and would get 5-6 shots in a minute or two. That wasnt sustained however. So yes, the majority of the time Rangers carried the play. Good effort though.

    • killerpgh - Jan 13, 2014 at 4:27 PM

“Hank stood on his head and that was the difference or this game could have ended with a score of 8-8”

You do know hockey games can’t end tied, right?

    • moarjam - Jan 13, 2014 at 7:18 PM

      John Moore a fighter?

He’s not exactly a softie but a fighter he is not. I’m actually surprised schenn didn’t rough him up more. He wins that fight 10 out of 10 times.

      • moarjam - Jan 13, 2014 at 7:24 PM

That being said Moore was voted the winner on (71.3%) 😉
