Video: Wild’s Fontaine picks up the hat trick against Coyotes

Jan 10, 2014, 2:45 AM EDT

Justin Fontaine was in the right spot at the right time, well, actually three different times Thursday night.

The Minnesota Wild’s 26-year-old forward scored the hat trick and his team picked up a 4-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes, thanks in large to a third-period outburst that broke open a one-one deadlock after 40 minutes.

According to a tweet from the NHL, Fontaine becomes the first Wild rookie to record a hat trick.

    Big win. Nice work, kid.

Good to see the kid rewarded. Maybe having two of the top players out will help all these young players step up now and into the future. Wild fans can only hope.

Backstrom robbed him on multiple opportunities, but it’s nothing new. He sacrifices solid D for points.

Sure didn’t see that game coming. That turnover by Yandle on Fontaine’s first goal was something.

Does everyone still want to get rid of Backstrom? He’s back to his old self
