Sutter: ‘I’m not into feeling sorry for guys because they’ve been around a long time’

Sutter Peace Sign

So, here’s a curious development out of Los Angeles….

On Friday, LA Kings Insider spoke to veteran rearguard Matt Greene about being a healthy scratch for the last three games, then asked Kings head coach Darryl Sutter if he anticipated Green being in the lineup soon.

Sutter said no — “I’m not into ‘what you did,’ I’m into ‘what you’re doing'” — before sharing some thoughts on parking veteran players like Greene in the press box.

“I’m not into feeling sorry for guys because they’ve been around a long time. I’m in to how they play. Very simple. Either they accept it, or they don’t.”

[Reporter: Does it seem like he’s accepting it?]

“He better. He better have a good attitude, very simple. The only thing I don’t accept is anybody with a bad attitude in terms of work ethic, attitude, or how they’re received by their teammates. It’s why we’re a good team. It’s a change that we’ve had to make, obviously, in the last three years here.”

Not exactly clear what prompted this. Kings Insider reports that Greene’s handled the demotion well and hasn’t complained about the situation, so perhaps this is just a case of Darryl being Darryl.

That said, it’s pretty obvious Greene’s role on the team has greatly diminished. The 30-year-old alternate captain has essentially been replaced in the lineup by 26-year-old Alec Martinez, who scored his fourth goal of the season last night in a 4-2 win over Boston.

Jeez, I love Darryl Sutter! He’s an excellent coach, and he’s certainly entertaining.

I’ve been watching the A on the jersey move from Richards to Greene (returning from an injury) and back to Richards again. You have to click the link to read the entire Sutter quote. Never mind – I’ll copy it here:

Darryl Sutter, on whether he anticipates getting Greene into the lineup soon:

No. Based on performance. I’m not into ‘what you did.’ I’m into ‘what you’re doing.’

Reporter: How much is it based on performance, and how much of it is just putting out the six players that give you the best chance to win on that particular night?

We went on a trip and didn’t have much to show for it when we came home, and Greene played every game. So at the end of the day, when you make changes, you make changes generally in your sixth defenseman and your fourth line. So last night the game before, he was the sixth defenseman, and he went out. Last night, Jordan Nolan went out. That’s a fact. That’s what good coaches do, and that’s what good teams do, and that’s too bad. I’m not into feeling sorry for guys ‘cause they’ve been around a long time. I’m in to how they play. Very simple. Either they accept it, or they don’t.

Reporter: Does it seem like he’s accepting it?

He better. He better have a good attitude, very simple. The only thing I don’t accept is anybody with a bad attitude in terms of work ethic, attitude, or how they’re received by their teammates. It’s why we’re a good team. It’s a change that we’ve had to make, obviously, in the last three years here.

Greene also had good things to say about Alec Martinez.

All this seems like reporters trying to create a problem when there’s none there.

I wish Darryl would invite Lou Lamoriello out for a beer.

Great, now I can’t get Sutter’s voice and those faces that he makes out of my mind.

Well when it takes your team almost 50 years to finally win once then you have to milk it for as much as possible i guess.
