Report: Oilers’ GM got into shouting match with fan after Tuesday’s loss

These are not good times for hockey fans in Edmonton, or those involved with the Oilers for that matter.

The latest chapter in the Oilers’ season of woe occurred Tuesday, when Craig MacTavish, the club’s general manager, reportedly got into a shouting match with a fan following a 5-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues, according to the Edmonton Sun.

“Ah, the usual stuff, I’d just had enough,” MacTavish told the Edmonton Sun. “It was not a good night to have it.”

It would seem that fan has probably had enough, too. This season has turned into a disaster for the Oilers, thought to be a team on the rise with the likes of Taylor Hall, Nail Yakupov, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle, to name a few.

Not to mention their new coach Dallas Eakins, who was hired in June with great fanfare.

But that has not translated well on the ice. The Oilers sit dead last in the Pacific Division, dead last in the Western Conference and are only five points up on the Buffalo Sabres for dead last in the entire National Hockey League standings.

The fans have let their frustrations be known.

In December, after another loss to the Blues, a fan threw his jersey onto the ice in frustration. That prompted Eakins to fire back at the fan, Curtis Goyetche, calling him “a quitter.”

      **Slow Clap**

They need to shake everything up, put everyone on the market apart from Hall, he’s the only one who deserves to stay. They could get some serious return on their star players. They need a defensman like Shea Weber

    • killerpgh - Jan 9, 2014 at 11:19 AM

I bet 29 other team want a d-man like Weber as well. The problem is there are less than a handful of that type of player that are as effective as Weber in the NHL.

I thumb upped your post sheerly because i noticed your handle.

      Nuff said.

This team is a joke, Calgary is probably only a season or two away from surpassing where Edmonton is at and they just finally admitting to the rebuilding stage early 2013, just sad.

    • stepanup - Jan 9, 2014 at 9:35 AM

At least Calgary has a defensive anchor in Giordano and a centerpiece to build around in Monahan. Calgary will be up and competing before Edmonton.

Hemsky at the deadline for picks. Package Justin Schultz, Eberle and possibly draft picks for an elite defenseman (if possible) and then re-evaluate in the off season and try to obtain a tender.

    • buddysguys - Jan 9, 2014 at 8:08 AM

no one wants Hemsky, they try trading him everyday it seems like. NO ONE WANTS HIM

      • withseidelinn - Jan 9, 2014 at 9:28 AM

By pick(s) I mean late rounds like 5-7. I realize he has minimal value but look at what Toronto did with Liles.

    • blynasty - Jan 9, 2014 at 9:22 AM

Schultz and Eberle for Kris Letang

      • ibieiniid - Jan 9, 2014 at 9:33 AM

        too much for not enough.

      • jpelle82 - Jan 9, 2014 at 10:09 AM

i would take just schultz for letang and i’m a pens fan.

      • ibieiniid - Jan 9, 2014 at 10:29 AM

lol that’s a bit bold. I was thinking just Eberle for Letang. Schultz and Eberle is a lot of youth… not that the oilers are lacking in youth, but still.

    The ship be sinkin’!

    • ibieiniid - Jan 9, 2014 at 8:27 AM

I can’t say I’ve ever seen you do anything other than troll on this site. you’re doing PHT a real service. where would the comment sections be without insightful analysis like “the ship be sinkin’!”?

      • stepanup - Jan 9, 2014 at 10:56 AM

When he’s right, he’s right. He just missed that the ship has already sunk.

      • ibieiniid - Jan 9, 2014 at 11:01 AM

lol even a non-hockey fan could simply read “GM got into shouting match with fan after Tuesday’s loss,” and derive that the Oilers aren’t doing so hot.

  7. patthehockeyfan - Jan 9, 2014 at 8:26 AM

Without defending either the fan or the GM (or the coach), it amazes me how thin-skinned the coach and GM are. They expect people to pay to see what, in the fans’ eyes, is an inferior product. Then they (MacTavish and Eakins) get angry and retaliate (to an extent) when fans complain about the product.

Bottom line, I think the fans in Edmonton deserve more – from their team, from the coach and especially from the GM.

    • ibieiniid - Jan 9, 2014 at 8:29 AM

I’m reading that as a very justified, solid defense of the fan. “pay to see” and “complain about the product” is something I have no problem with a hockey fan doing. replying by shouting at your customers is another story… even if they’re a jerk.

      • joey4id - Jan 9, 2014 at 9:21 AM

I agree with you and patthehockeyfan. I also understand, but I don’t condone either the GM or coach’s responses. Eakins is a very proud man who strives on doing his job well, and had winning records in his last couple of years in the AHL. Frustration! Lack of sleep! Pressure! etc….. Will push the best of men to lose it once in a while. Most players sleep well after a loss. The coach doesn’t sleep well after a win because he’s always thinking ahead. Can you imagine how much sleep is missing considering the year they are having? Yikes!

Isn’t there a limit on how many 1 overall
Picks you can get???? Edm should be banned!

  9. killerpgh - Jan 9, 2014 at 11:27 AM

Could be worse. He could of hit the fan with a chair.

Wish I had seen this earlier. To be fair to MacT, he was saddled with Dubnyk as a starter. He mad an assessment that the team needed an upgrade, and tried to trade for Schneider, and offered more to Vancouver than they got from the Devils. I just don’t think anyone thought their goaltending would bomb so badly. And it seemed at the time, that Eakins was an upgrade over Kruger. For them to look as bad as they have under Eakins has been tough. But MacT did raise expectations about improving this team. It’s been a farce.

  10. mlhegs - Jan 9, 2014 at 8:55 PM

To the owner of the Oilers.

It is no sin to admit a mistake

Kevin Lowe needs to be fired for his arrogance and disrespectful attitude, even if you thought he new what he was doing, you have to see that remarks by GM MAC T even show less respect for the fans, you know the ones that bought you a new arena and supported your failing team management for the last five yars.
