Chara named Slovakian Olympic captain

Jan 8, 2014, 2:05 PM EDT

Zdeno Chara

On Tuesday, Boston’s Zdeno Chara was named captain of the Slovakian team set to participate at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Chara, who also serves as the Bruins’ captain, will be reprising his role from the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, where he led the Slovaks to a surprise semifinal appearance and fourth-place finish.

It’s unclear who will act as Chara’s alternates for the tournament. Marian Hossa (also named to this year’s team) and the late Pavol Demitra both wore the “A” for Slovakia in ’10, and there appears to be no shortage of veteran presences capable of filling the void — Michal Handzus, Lubomir Visnovsky and Marian Gaborik, to name a few.

Congrats. Now withdraw and take the two weeks off. I’d prefer not to see an exhausted seven foot turnstile manning the B’s blue line come May/June.

Not that it’d matter against some of the teams in the East, but I’d think if they get to the finals the West team would be quite happy to see a 7′ turnstile.

No Sides to help him out is gonna put even more responsibility on him. That, together with the youth of the D around him is going to take it’s toll.

I totally agree. I know it means a ton for players to play for their country but selfishly I’d rather he be resting and not risking injury. Maybe its different if you are playing for a basement NHL team but it will be hard to swallow if any of these guys get hurt over there. I didn’t really think Lucic deserved a slot on the insanely talented Canadian team anyway but I was relieved when he didn’t make it…..

My god he is going to look so slow out there on those huge rinks! Slovakia is doomed with this guy leading them!!!

Thank the lord he doesn’t have the same work ethic as Danny Briere!

Was wondering when you would pipe in with your pathetic campaign. Still hurt about Maxi eh?

The fact that he’s a captain has nothing to do with where he is talent wise in his career. It’s all about the fact that he’s one of the most respected guys and best leaders in the game. The fact is Slovakia is going to struggle to medal. If a guy like Halak gets hot they could surprise some people, but the fate of the team rests on the roster as a whole and not the fact that Chara was named a captain.
