Sharks finally beat Blackhawks via shootout

Jan 5, 2014, 11:48 PM EDT

The San Jose Sharks came into Sunday with a six-game losing streak against the Chicago Blackhawks, but they finally ended that thanks to a 3-2 shootout win in a captivating contest on NBCSN.

Both goalies were tested regularly, as Alex Stalock won it by stopping 33 out of 35 shots while Corey Crawford grabbed a point for the ‘Hawks after making 40 out of 42 saves. Brent Burns notched the game-tying tally, giving him 14 goals in just 30 games played.

The Sharks have been thriving in “the skills competition” lately, with four of their last six wins coming via shootouts. Overall, they’ve won six of their last eight games.

Chicago probably won’t have a ton to complain about big picture-wise, as they’ve notched at least a standings point in every game except a 7-3 loss to Toronto in the past 30 days. They’ve also generated a point in 10 straight contests (6-0-4).

A lot of different things would need to swing one way or another for it to happen, but it’s hard not to daydream about the two teams meeting in the 2014 playoffs after watching games like these. Well, unless you’re a Blackhawks or Sharks fan, that is.

Exciting game, but not the high scoring affair I thought it would be. Hawks have struggled in SO, while the Sharks have thrived. I still think they should get rid of shootouts alltogether…

and I think PHT should get rid of you …

And I think your dad should’ve pulled out. I’m pretty sure that was one of the terms when they settled on a price that night.

Agree that shootouts should go; but, they won’t. (thanks, Bettman)

I couldn’t believe that the World Juniors would have used the shootout in case of a tie. Thank goodness Finland won in OT. I don’t think I could have stomached watching that game had it been decided in a shootout.

I don’t like shootouts all that much, but in the NHL they just can’t keep playing until there is a winner because of the tight schedule and travel requirements. Seems like the fans attending the games and the players like SOs because their all standing.

They used to have a thing called a tie. One OT. Still tied? Both teams got one point. Game over.

Yes, the fans seem to like the shootout. Not too sure about players. Tuukka Rask absolutely hates them, the Caps’ coach doesn’t like them, others have complained.

After the Winter Classic, one commentator (NBC or NHL Network) said that the shootout isn’t fair to goalies. The game is a team on team sport. In a shootout, it becomes just one guy who, in Jimmy Howard’s case, lost the game. I agree that it’s unfair, and just a gimmick.

Speaking of Rask, when he lost in a shootout a month or two ago, he went off. News reports said he had “… a stick-swinging nutty,” and said that he continued dropping “Finnish F-bombs” as he left the ice. I don’t blame him.

        I just don’t like the shootout. As I wrote, it’s a gimmick.

They should end in a tie after 10min of 4-on-4 sudden death. If a team scores, they get 2pts and the losing team gets 0pts. Easiest solution…

Hell, do 3-on-3 if you want to see some breakaways…

A high scoring affair? Two of the best teams in the league face each other and you thought we were in for high scoring affair. Wow! I guess in your mind these teams don’t know how to shut down their opponents.

      • jhaegs - Jan 6, 2014 at 6:32 PM

Two high powered offenses, a backup goalie, and a goalie that recently came back from injury. Yes, I was expecting more goals. Blackhawks have the most goals in the league (167) and the Sharks are tied for 4th in the league (142).

      • joey4id - Jan 6, 2014 at 6:45 PM

And how do they fair defensively?

Great win by the Sharks! They played hard for 65 minutes. Good win for Stalock also. He was like a brick wall tonight.

Both goaltenders put on a show last night. I was expecting more of 6-5 OT game…
