Update: Bishop won’t return after suffering upper-body injury

Jan 5, 2014, 9:10 PM EST

Update: The Tampa Bay Lightning announced that Ben Bishop won’t return on Sunday. They’re calling it an upper-body injury, while others seem pretty decisive about it being his right hand.

Anders Lindback didn’t do much to ease tensions if Bishop is injured, as the big goalie and the Bolts fell to the Edmonton Oilers 5-3 on Sunday.

It hasn’t even been a full week yet, but 2014 already isn’t treating Tampa Bay Lightning goalie Ben Bishop very nicely. Just days after missing out on an Olympic roster spot, Bishop appeared to hurt his right hand during Sunday’s game with the Edmonton Oilers.

It’s too early to tell how severe the injury might be, but various reports indicate that he’s undergoing X-rays.

The Tampa Bay Times’ Damian Cristodero wonders if this might be a recurring issue:

PHT will update whenever more news becomes available.

For the Lightning sake I hope his not out for a while. It could be a huge loss for Tampa Bay.

Time to give Vasilevskiy a trial run. Played well for Russia at WJC.

Of course, he’s not under contract with the Lightning and is under contract in the KHL, but don’t let facts or rationality get in your way or anything.

It is a huge loss if this is more serious and it very well could be.

Looked to me as if his blocker hand was jammed up at an odd angle by Eberle’s leg skating by. Then Bishop’s stick was caught up with TJ’s legs while moving hard to the left and it definitely put a serious strain on his right hand/wrist. My guess from the replay is ligament/tendon problem or a fracture. Best case is a mild sprain.

Worst part is, Lindback played well, but he always gets a terrible effort in front of him. I still don’t understand how we can play so well, and the next night we can make a simple non-pressured open pass to clear our D zone. Either we’re all ON or almost everyone is sloppy. Kucherov, Filppula, Palat were solid. Everyone else including St Louis were sloppy.

How is the ice in Edmonton that bad this time of year BTW?!?

We gave up 2 important points we didn’t have to and it wasn’t on Lindy.

    Wake up Boys,

Best to you Bish and hope it isn’t as bad as it looked.
