Video: Sharp’s hat trick leads Blackhawks over Devils

Patrick Sharp continued to make his case to be on Canada’s Olympic hockey team.

The Chicago Blackhawks forward scored a hat trick – and all three goals were beauties – in his team’s 5-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday. Sharp is up to 25 goals on the season, with Friday marking the second time in the last five games that he’s recorded a hat trick.

On his first goal, he was all around the puck – first with a scoring chance in front of the New Jersey net, then he forced a turnover and a few seconds later the puck was back on his stick, then off it in a split second and in the net with a wicked wrist shot.

Hockey Canada’s Olympic brass will name the roster for Canada’s team in the men’s hockey competition on Jan. 7. Sharp’s play this season – not to mention his contributions to the Blackhawks dating back to 2005-06 – has to get him in consideration for a roster spot.

Jonathan Toews, part of the 2010 Canadian team that won gold who is expected to be at the 2014 Olympics as well, has already backed his teammate Sharp to make the cut for Sochi.

“He has shown everything he can do throughout his career, since the last Olympics, and throughout this season. I don’t think there are any holes in his game,” Toews recently told the Chicago Tribune.

Sitting second in the NHL in goals now. He, Kane, Toews, Keith, Seabrook and half a dozen other ‘Hawks are having monster seasons.

He’s also #5 amount Canadians in total points. The irony is, Team USA, while having some very good players to chose from, chose to leave off their #5 scorer (Ryan). Left off Okposo. Left off Saad – in order to chose Dustin Brown who has a MASSIVE 13 points this year.

Saad as a pure rookie last year (Carder finalist) had equal productivity to Brown. This year he has more goals that Brown has points (and > 2x points as well) this year. Saad is fairly big, skates well, goes to the net and corners reliably, good hands. Good two way player. Is quite willing to accept any assignments.

An excellent and improving player omitted, a declining player chosen instead. Saad is extremely likely to be suspended from the Olyimpics due to infractions. Take out artist Dustin Brown on the other hand?????

There’s absolutely no way Canada can leave him off the roster after this. Before the season started I didn’t even consider him as a bubble player, but what a season he’s having. His chemistry with Toews, his goal scoring ability, and his two-way play just makes him a fantastic player. Put him on the second line with Toews in Sochi and this’ll keep up.

I sure hope Steve Y is listening. Agree with all but the bubble thing. A very telling stat ws last year, Hawks record when he was playing and healthy (their streak came to an end the night he had a bad shoulder injury in the 1st period vs. the Aves), covering. HUGE factor.

Yeah he is. Plays in all three zones and does a great job of it. He’s the exact type of player they want.

Canada’s version of a “shutdown” line is probably going to feature two of the top 10 in NHL scoring, be it Getzlaf and Perry or Toews and Sharp. Have fun with that, rest of the world.

Hawks hit a whole new gear in the 3rd. Devils kept in it, but it wasn’t enough. Great game, great goaltending on both sides. Good to see Martin Brodeur still is playing that well.

Imagine how good Team Canada will be when they have Sharp with Toews and of course Crosby with Kunitz. Kunitz and Sharp are playing incredible now and despite prior beliefs are both marquee guys. They do both the little and the big things and those are the guys who win you championships.
