Video: Lupul crosschecks Eaves in Winter Classic

Jan 1, 2014, 2:35 PM EST

A nasty crosscheck, by Toronto’s Joffrey Lupul to the neck/head of Detroit’s Patrick Eaves, was the most notable play of the 2014 Winter Classic’s scoreless first period.

Lupul received a two-minute minor from the on-ice officials. But given Eaves was forced to leave the game with an upper-body injury and is questionable to return, plus the fact Lupul received a two-game suspension in March for hitting Tampa Bay’s Victor Hedman in the head, that may not be the extent of the punishment. Expect the NHL’s Department of Player Safety to take a close look.

Yeah I don’t like that. If you’re going to crosscheck then give the guy a shot in the ribs, not the head.

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Jan 1, 2014 at 3:12 PM

Hockey gods just levied some punishment on Lupul, he got the first assist on the Wings goal.

    • joey4id - Jan 1, 2014 at 4:36 PM

Yeah! Cross check the guy in the ribs. Bust a rib. That’s real smart. Maybe when players fight the should punch themselves in the ribs too instead of the head.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Jan 1, 2014 at 4:55 PM

So you want to get crosschecking and battles along the boards out of the game as well?

      • joey4id - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:01 PM

Nooooooooooooo! I want to find ways to reduce head shots to decrease the number of concussions. An obvious and easy way is give game misconduct for fighting and all head shots.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:03 PM

Yeah, we all know that. Not sure how the comment about busting a rib has relevance.

  2. csilojohnson - Jan 1, 2014 at 2:50 PM

    Agreed.
Injury should not sway decision on suspension though.

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Jan 1, 2014 at 2:56 PM

Absolutely. A dangerous play is a dangerous play. Suspend guys based on the action, and suspend them for a while, maybe they’ll get the message.

    • joey4id - Jan 1, 2014 at 3:41 PM

Unfortunately, the players and owners agreed to use injuries in the equation to determine the length of the suspension. See the CBA.

  3. pavelfitzgerald - Jan 1, 2014 at 2:57 PM

    It shouldn’t (injuries swaying decisions).
I would like to see a little suspension due to this being such a dumb thing to do that could quite easily injury someone.
Anyone who plays hockey knows you’re going to get cross checks in the back, ribs, chest, etc. but a cross check to the back of an unsuspecting head? Come on man, show a little respect

    • claudegirwho - Jan 1, 2014 at 2:59 PM

Jw but can you cross check to the back of a suspecting head?

    • 19wasthebest - Jan 1, 2014 at 3:09 PM

That is the problem with these guys, no respect for your fellow players and t is getting worse. Want to change it, change the elbow pads, shoulder pads and sticks and get rid of the instigator penalty. You can have a tough guy that knows how to play, does not have to be strictly a fighter like Scott.

      • joey4id - Jan 1, 2014 at 3:43 PM

How is getting rid of the instigator rule (will never happen anyway) help?

      • c9castine - Jan 1, 2014 at 3:44 PM

oh no the respect police again. this is a common hockey play just happened in a weird way. lupus was getting carried away with the cross checks and eaves was hunched over and he missed his shoulder and popped him in the neck.

its a stupid play probably should have gotten a 5 min roughing penalty and thats that. relax.

Who are these idiot NBC announcers.

Down to the 45 the 30 the 20!!!

    Big football pile-up!!!

    • imleftcoast - Jan 1, 2014 at 3:41 PM

One of them said it was the end of the ‘second quarter.’ Ridiculous.

    • c9castine - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:21 PM

doc emeric and ed olcyk? a hall of fame NHL broadcaster and a longtime NHL player?

i think your being dramatic and whiny

  5. mshantz22 - Jan 1, 2014 at 3:18 PM

Injuries shouldn’t affect the decision to suspend? Really? Hacky crap plays like that cause injuries. Eaves had just gotten off a 12-month absence from hockey due to a concussion and then gets cross-checked in the head. If you want concussions gone from the game, get rid of these dirty unnecessary hits. Hope to see lupus get 3+ games.

    • titansrbeast - Jan 1, 2014 at 3:41 PM

That was a nasty cross-check. I agree, I hope to see him sit out at least 2-3 games. Even if it came down to a one game suspension though, I would hope he doesn’t get away with that one.

Joey loves women’s hockey. No hitting and no fighting. Has no favorite team in the NHL either. Not sure how his opinions hold any water on PHT.

    steady-on sjsharks66

there’s nothing wrong with womens’ hockey…or the women playing hockey…girls errrr let me rephrase that, women in hockey gear are a bit of a turn-on…chubby central…

we rent summer ice where and after our national team practices…tres buff eh…great players…scary good…they’re even developing big shots…i hang around the bikes after…you know…

i have women, some national team cuts, who play on my wednesday ice…one of them’s the best player out there

    as for joey, baby…

    don’t get crazy
    detours, fences
    don’t get defensive

i know we’ve heard it all before
so I don’t say it anymore
i just stand by and let you fight your secret war…

Lupul must have learned that move from that D-bag Chris Kunitz.

Dirty player. I hope he gets suspended.
