Here is your 2014 United States men’s Olympic roster

USA Hockey has announced its roster for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Without further ado, here it is:

Forwards (14): David Backes, Dustin Brown, Ryan Callahan, Patrick Kane, Ryan Kesler, Phil Kessel, T.J. Oshie, Max Pacioretty, Zach Parise, Joe Pavelski, Paul Stastny, Derek Stepan, James van Riemsdyk, Blake Wheeler

Defensemen (8): John Carlson, Justin Faulk, Cam Fowler, Paul Martin, Ryan McDonagh, Brooks Orpik, Kevin Shattenkirk, Ryan Suter

Goalies (3): Jimmy Howard, Ryan Miller, Jonathan Quick

Some quick thoughts before general manager David Poile meets with the media in Ann Arbor:

— Like they did in 2010 when they won silver, the Americans will boast a lot of speed. And on the big ice in Sochi, that could be even more of an advantage than it was in Vancouver, where the ice was NHL-sized.

— Assuming he stays healthy and his play doesn’t fall off dramatically in the next month, Miller should be the starting goalie. He’s been excellent in Buffalo this season, and he was outstanding in Vancouver four years ago. Those factors should give him the edge over Quick, who hasn’t played since Nov. 12 due to a strained groin.

— If there’s a weakness compared to gold-medal favorite Canada, it may be the blue line. Suter is the only Norris Trophy candidate. The other seven are all good, obviously, but they’d be hard-pressed to make the Canadian squad.

The U.S. plays its first game on Feb. 13 versus Slovakia.

So the second highest US scorer (15g and 25a in 40 games) doesn’t make the squad?

    That makes sense.

    • 19to77 - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:13 PM

No complaints from north of the border.

    • playmaker17 - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:25 PM

Herb brooks once said that it’s not about having the best players it’s about having the right ones.

      • bcisleman - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:49 PM

Anybody who doesn’t think Kyle Okposo is the “right” player is either clueless or has never seen him play.

      • brockohol - Jan 2, 2014 at 2:44 PM

Ryan Callahan is for sure the right player. Lets see…multiple injuries this season, check. Currently injured with a knee injury, check. When healthy this season has played poorly (13 pts ,24 gms, -10) check. Career minus player, check.

Hey, Im sure if he were healthy all season he would be a nice addiction but c’mon man. Bobby freakin Ryan gets left out? If he is so slow and defensively incompetent, how is he +10 on a below avg team?

Havent seen enough of Okposo to have a opinion other than looking at his stats which are unreal this year…and have been unreal (bad) the past two season.

  2. dcfan4life - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:05 PM

Good for John Carlson, he was really hoping to make it. I see 3 goalies who all have been incredibly streaky. Sometimes they are brilliant, sometimes not. Any ideas on who starts game 1 at the Olympics? Ryan Miller, despite his team in Ottawa killing his numbers, is still the choice for me.

  3. alexcolesays - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:12 PM

Buff should of made this over Orpik and Bishop should of made it over Howard. Blake Wheeler? You cant be serious with that selection!

    • lowenni - Jan 1, 2014 at 9:12 PM

Agree with the first two, but Wheeler is very underrated. When he’s on his game, he’s really good. He’s a fantastic skater and he’s huge, and that alone is enough to get him on Olympic-sized ice.

    • endusersolutions2013 - Jan 1, 2014 at 11:24 PM

The concern with BigBuf is speed. Totally agree on Bishop over Howard.

  4. muckleflugga - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:13 PM

    good…they’re bringing orpik…

    herr frankenstein must have worked wonders…new brain…old sub-par iq…

one less zamboni needed to clear ice in the american’s end

howard…lmao…courtesy pick…the europeans gorge on five holes the size of jimmy’s…shootouts…he’s useless

miller could backstop a clearly superior american offering…for the gold they deserved in vancouver…

    but ooooh, those rooskies…?

the bear coming loaded for bear

  5. cameltoews - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:14 PM

Listen there are always going to be snubs but team USA has a lot of speed and is being built for the bigger ice surface. I think the leadership is Backes, Brown, and Cally. I like our chances.

  6. lowenni - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:15 PM

I like the roster. The only changes I would have are Bishop over Howard, Yandle over Fowler, and I think Ryan should play but his skating is not great and it’s hard to leave off others. Glad to see John Carlson made it as a Caps fan, and I think the top-6 D will be McDonagh, Suter, Carlson, Shattenkirk, Fowler and Martin. Orpik’s skating has detiororated and he won’t be as effective on the big ice. All in all, solid roster, and most of all I’m excited to see Miller shine and prove himself as an elite goalie once again on a big stage.

    • storminator16 - Jan 2, 2014 at 9:49 AM

If the group collectively ranked Justin Faulk ahead of Shattenkirk, Carlson, and Fowler…..me thinks he’s in the top 6. He’s a right handed D. Don’t be surprised if he is on the second pairing.

  7. davidpuddy720 - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:24 PM

Buff would of been a terrible selection for the big ice surface- I would have liked to see Yandle over Orpik but it is what it is

  8. runhigh24 - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:29 PM

Orpik is gonna form a defensive pairing with Paul Martin (instant chemisty) and while you could argue Bishop over Howard its hardly worth getting upset over who the 3rd goalie is.

    • endusersolutions2013 - Jan 1, 2014 at 11:35 PM

I disagree. While Quick has great upside, he was not playing hat well this year, and has not played in a month. Bishop may well be needed as a #2, and is far more consistent than Howard this year.

  9. ribs108 - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:33 PM

Seriously? Pacioretty and Stepan over Bobby Ryan? Not wishing it, but Max has a good chance of injury prior to the Games. Martin AND Orpik over Yandle? Howard over Bishop or Thomas?? Who selected the US team? Gainey, Gauthier or Bergevin???

  10. stevebass2 - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:52 PM

I’m cheering for team USA, I really am, but I doubt this roster can beat Canada. Absolutely mind boggling choices. I mean, if they’re not going to go out and pick the best defensemen available (Yandle, Buff, etc.), they should at least front load the offense more, I would imagine. Yet they don’t pick Pominville or Ryan or Okposo, and take the woefully underperforming Callahan, Stepan, Wheeler, and Brown instead? I can’t see USA winning with this roster, I just can’t.

    • stevebass2 - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:54 PM

On top of that, Shero and Poile think that Orpik and Martin can handle the open ice better than Yandle can? Ridiculous.

    • greatmiamisportsmind - Jan 2, 2014 at 1:05 AM

Gold medals are won on the ice, not on paper……………..

    • cofran2004 - Jan 2, 2014 at 10:12 AM

Cally isn’t underperforming… he’s injured. There’s a difference. He’s consitantly been the best player on the ice for the rangers when he’s been in the lineup.

      • brockohol - Jan 2, 2014 at 2:50 PM

Rangers best player is minus 6 averaging 1/2 point per game? yikes

      • cofran2004 - Jan 2, 2014 at 2:54 PM

Yikes indeed, the rangers haven’t been very good this season as a team.

  11. bcisleman - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:52 PM

Kyle Okposo is a superb skater and would be just fine on the big ice before. He is also every bit the leader any of the others are AND has outscored every player on this roster but Kane. Big miss.

    • bcisleman - Jan 1, 2014 at 5:54 PM

Meant to say as he has shown in international competition before after big ice.

    • lowenni - Jan 1, 2014 at 9:14 PM

I think Shero and Poile probably think that a lot Okposo’s points are a tribute to him playing alongside Tavares (and to be honest, some of them are, although he’s a great player). He probably wouldn’t have made the top-9 and he isn’t going to be playing next to someone like Tavares on the fourth line of the team, so perhaps they wanted someone like a Callahan to serve that grinding role.

      • cofran2004 - Jan 2, 2014 at 10:15 AM

This. How good are okposo’s numbers without Tavares? Comparable to Cally’s, sans the huge amount of leadership Cally brings to the table. I can’t see Okposo over Callahan. Now if he took Stepan’s place, I’d get it. Stepan has been very streaky this year, and Okposo has been consistantly good. THAT I could get behind.

  12. stepanup - Jan 1, 2014 at 6:11 PM

There are definitely many talented players that didn’t make this cut, but it’s clear Poile was building a team with a specific vision for each spot. Not all the most talented players made it, but hockey isn’t a complete talent show. In Poile’s eyes Ryan isn’t one of our four best scoring wingers, and isn’t one of our best checking/grinder wingers.

Poile built a team, and it looks like a solid, well-rounded one . Maybe Edmonton should try it.

  13. hosewater2 - Jan 1, 2014 at 6:20 PM

Callahan is just a lousy choice. Mediocre NHLer.

    • cofran2004 - Jan 2, 2014 at 10:18 AM

Lemme guess: You’re a fan of the isles, devils, flyers, or penguins? Take off the rose colored glasses. Cally is definitely a good choice for this team.

  14. cameltoews - Jan 1, 2014 at 6:52 PM

I don’t understand how you can say Callahan is a lousy choice. You realize you need forwards who can play in all facets of the game right? Ones that can play in front of the net on the power play, that can penalty kill, that can hit, and sacrifice his body for the cause. That’s why Callahan was chosen bc he is a reliable forward who can do anything. You can just have a bunch of studs who don’t back check. You need a grinding line that can play against top players and stop them.

  15. cameltoews - Jan 1, 2014 at 7:02 PM

Everyone keeps forgetting that they are building a TEAM. You can’t just have 4 first lines that’s not how a team works. You need shutdown and grinding lines. I get it people have favorite players on their team and want them to be on it but I think I will trust what team usa staff has put together. We are all responding from our computer chairs.

  16. hazlydose - Jan 1, 2014 at 7:28 PM

I do have some gripes about the omissions of Yandle and Ryan, but this is a solid team. I love the idea of a Brown-Backes-Callahan shut down line.

  17. bigwayne75 - Jan 1, 2014 at 7:35 PM

New York Rangers has 3 players representing the U.S., tied for the most in the NHL. You want to know why because the Rangers care about the U.S. and the other team in the NHL hate the U.S. especially the NHL Eastern Conference but I am mostly the Flyers and Bruins, they don’t care because they are communist.

    • hazlydose - Jan 1, 2014 at 7:39 PM

      Yeah those darn communist Canadians…

    • alexcolesays - Jan 1, 2014 at 8:47 PM

Ya the bruins really hate the US having a goalie (Tim Thomas) that won them a stanley cup and everything…

    • thesportsjudge - Jan 1, 2014 at 10:46 PM

I’m guessing the 75 in your screen-name bigwayne is you “boasting” about your IQ?

    • nbcornwell - Jan 1, 2014 at 11:46 PM

      This post gave me cancer

  18. deezenucks - Jan 1, 2014 at 8:11 PM

What are you rambling on about bigwayne?
USA has been much improved over the years, I like a lot of their players. Howard should not have been invited though. It’s gonna be a fun battle but IMO Sweden wins it again and Russia won’t even medal with that D their putting out.

    • bigwayne75 - Jan 1, 2014 at 8:43 PM

Who I can’t even joke around

      • cofran2004 - Jan 2, 2014 at 10:21 AM

Wrong question word, wayne. You were going for “what, I can’t even joke around?” ‘Who’ makes no sense there.

  19. pavelfitzgerald - Jan 1, 2014 at 8:43 PM

    Make sense much Wayne?

I’m a Jets fan & do like Blake Wheeler but even I was surprised, especially over Ryan, Okopso & Pominville not soo much.

Relevant fact – Team USA wabted to go with hot players & Wheeler scored the second most goals in the NHL in the month of December (10, Patrick Kane had 12)

    • alexcolesays - Jan 1, 2014 at 8:49 PM

they wanted to go with hot players but left off bishop? doesnt make sense

      • nbcornwell - Jan 1, 2014 at 11:47 PM

And took on Howard who has been out a while only to come back and lose 2 straight

  20. hines86for6 - Jan 1, 2014 at 8:45 PM

he doesn’t score, but I would have liked to see Paul Gaustad make it as a 4th line grinder. he has the best faceoff % in the league and is a fantastic PK specialist.

    • matt14gg - Jan 7, 2014 at 5:33 PM

I will give you credit for coming up with a guy NO ONE else even considered. Trust me, if Paul Gaustad made the team his own parents would think it was a joke.

  21. pavelfitzgerald - Jan 1, 2014 at 8:52 PM

Good point AlexCole, I would’ve taken Bishop over Howard all day. He’s been very hot & would’ve been scary to see.

    Signed,

    — A proud & hopeful Canadian

  22. hardkor07mn - Jan 1, 2014 at 10:50 PM

I would have taken Okposo over Oshie for sure. You can’t leave the goal scorers at home. Jmo

    • brockohol - Jan 2, 2014 at 2:58 PM

IM with you on taking Okposo but not over Oshie. There are some guys taken that are minus hockey players. Oshie is a very well rounded player. Kills penalties, can play C, fast, physical…and while he doesnt have many goals he has just been throwing the puck to Backes and Steen all season because those two cant miss. He has been scoring now that those two are out and he is being leaned on more.

  23. blomfeld - Jan 1, 2014 at 11:17 PM

    GO QUICK !!!!

GO UNITED STATES OF AMERICA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  24. multiplemiggs - Jan 2, 2014 at 10:31 AM

no Tkachuck, Chelios, DiPietro or Beezer? What a sham. GO CANADA

  25. multiplemiggs - Jan 2, 2014 at 10:33 AM

@cofran2004 Okposo is only good because of Tavares? What an asshat.

    • cofran2004 - Jan 2, 2014 at 4:59 PM

I dont think I said that. I think I said, in less words, that okposo’s stat boost from being a 25-25 guy to a guy having a career year is because he’s finally seeing significant time with Tavares.

      But assume what you want.

  26. thegronk87 - Jan 2, 2014 at 10:46 AM

Major goaltending advantage for Team USA over Canada., miller >>>>> luongo

  27. trmmadden34 - Jan 2, 2014 at 11:41 AM

    My Team U.S.A. Roster

Kessel, Kessler, Kane- Pure Goal scoring Line.
Parise, Backes, Oshie- Parise compliments backs and oshies game (like steen)
Pavelski, Brown, Okposo- defensively respsonsible and can score.
JVR, Statsny, Stepan, – Damn good Fourth line.

    Suter, Shattenkirk
    Yandle, Carlson
    Fowler, Faulk

Miller, Quick, Bishop- he’s earned it.

    • trmmadden34 - Jan 2, 2014 at 11:44 AM

Bobby Ryan over Stepan, my bad

    • brockohol - Jan 2, 2014 at 2:55 PM

I like it but would switch Kessler and Pavelski. I think Pavelski is the #1 offensive C on the team. I also think you can go ahead and put Parise with Kane and go all out. You can put the most defensively challenged forward in the league (Kessel?) on a line with Oshie and Backes and those two will keep things in check.

I also like that you have added in guys that didnt (should have) make it. That D core listed above looks a hell of alot better than “Orpik Martin”

  28. cameltoews - Jan 2, 2014 at 9:43 PM

They wanted 5 centers. That’s why saad and okposo don’t get on the team and stepan does. Just read the article about how the team was put together and you will understand every decision made.

  29. matt14gg - Jan 7, 2014 at 5:39 PM

Jimmy Howard is an average goalie having a below average season. Bishop and Schneider are both better. OTOH, the depth chart is Miller, Quick (tho I’d start Quick) and then Howard so I doubt it will matter.
