Discuss: Leafs beat Wings in the 2014 Winter Classic

Jan 1, 2014, 5:00 PM EDT

Winter Classic Maple Leafs Red Wings Hockey AP

Tyler Bozak‘s shootout goal gave the Toronto Maple Leafs a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in the 2014 Winter Classic at the Big House in Ann Arbor.

Some items for discussion while we await the announcement of the United States men’s Olympic team:

— How ’bout all that snow! And the crowd. That was a big crowd.

— It’s hard to treat the Winter Classic like a regular, old game (because it isn’t), but it counts the same in the standings. Both teams entered the contest with 45 points in 41 games, and they each held a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. They’re still the two wild-card teams, but Toronto’s a point up now.

— For the 12th time this season, the Wings scored first and didn’t win. Only four teams (Flames, Oilers, Islanders, and Sabres) have a winning percentage lower than Detroit’s when they open the scoring.

— Despite their victory today, the Leafs have just four regulation wins in their last 28 games. They do, however, have points in six straight games.

— The Wings outshot the Leafs, 43-26. Make that 17 wins for the Leafs this season when they’re outshot, the most in the NHL.

— This was the third Winter Classic to go past regulation. It was the second to go to a shootout. There are a lot of shootouts in the NHL.

— Will Joffrey Lupul miss a game or two for his crosscheck on Patrick Eaves?

— Michigan State product Justin Abdelkader scored the tying goal for the Red Wings in the third period. Apropos given the venue.

Wow, what a game! I give the NHL a lot of flak but they really do this event right. Awesome stuff.

WOW…. you and I agree on something!!!!

Glad you got this one right!

Stick around long enough and it was bound to happen!

I liked how the Red Wings trolled the Leafs by playing the Bruins goal horn each time they scored.

The WC is always awesome for the fans, players, and NHL as a whole. However, I found this one to be a little anti-climatic by being decided in a shootout. It didn’t feel as intense. Despite that, still a great game to watch and awesome experience.

By the way, the Leafs are terribly overrated.

Listen… I have no idea what your were watching or if you have ever played pond hockey in the snow. But that game was great considering the conditions. Ran into a ton of Leafs fans and they were all a fun classy bunch. Great game and great for the game.

game was a ton of fun to watch, blue and red jerseys looked great on the ice with the snow, loss stings but still a fun day!

Can’t wait to go to next years game in DC

Spectacular event. Ann Arbor should be proud. What a freakin’ crowd! We waited two years for it, but it more than lived up to expectations.

Compelling and fiercely played game in snow on the ice. What a great day for hockey.

Well done to the teams, the city, the league, the fans, the vendors, the police, everyone. No losers today. Everyone is a winner.

Whew! Great game. insanely fun to watch! Was hoping the ol’ Winged Wheelers would pull it off, but, meh. Too d@mn enjoyable (aside from the Eaves hit–hope he’s okay) to be that disappointed. Kudos to Bernier–the man stood on his head– & the Leafs.
And how freaking awesome were those alumni games?!? (COME BACK, NICK.)

Now that we’ve had a Winter Classic with a decent snowfall, I’m guessing the NHL’s next move is to embed reeds and stray twigs in the ice.

Loved the hat on the Maple Leafs goalie.

  9. polegojim - Jan 1, 2014 at 6:40 PM

Absolutely awesome game… old school stuff.

Tatar BLEW his chance.. but young error.

Lil disappointed in Jimmy re the second shootout goal.

Cheers to KILLING the shoot out… how COOL would hit have been to watch 2 or 3 OTs in this one?

  10. polegojim - Jan 1, 2014 at 6:42 PM

PS… truly enjoy seeing the Leafs in contention and competing…

Congrats Toronto… keep it going… great for hockey and O6 mystique

  11. polegojim - Jan 1, 2014 at 6:46 PM

PPS… Jason, glad you finally got past App State and on to the Hockey… but how in the world can you continue to focus on every negative facet of the event… including ALL involved:

    Maple Leafs
    Red Wings

You’re 3 for 3 on finding everything… but the positive in this event.

Dude, get back on the meds… for get the lil purple pills and try prozac… Sheesh

Loved Babcock just going for it and wearing the old school outfit.

Seemed like a home game for Toronto. How did that happen? Isn’t that a 5-hour drive?

      swim actually

There were a TON of blue and white in the stadium for both alumni game and the classic. They said about 40k at the big house were Leaf fans… which is close to half. Great turn out, the Leaf fans always travel well to Detroit and I have never ran into a bad Leaf fan yet. Disappointed in the loss for Detroit but it was an awesome experience.
