Video — Ovechkin: Refs ‘celebrate New Year’s too early’ to miss Neil headshot

Dec 31, 2013, 10:16 AM EDT

Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin probably wasn’t happy seeing his team lose to the Ottawa Senators on Monday night. One thing he really wasn’t pleased about was the shot in the head he took from Sens forward Chris Neil.

Check out the video from to see the play in question.

Neil wasn’t penalized for the hit and was injured on the play and did not return.

Following the game, Ovechkin made sure to mention the play and didn’t hold back his feelings as Katie Carrera of The Washington Post shares.

“Four guys out there didn’t do their job, maybe they decide to celebrate New Year’s too early right before the game and they didn’t see headshots [from] Neil against me,” Ovechkin said. “He fell on the ice, it was kind of embarrassing to see.”

Tell us how you really feel, Alex.

HA! he bounced off him and hurt himself. Apparently Ovi’s head is harder than Neil’s elbow.

I’m sorry… I love seeing dirty hits backfire. It’s hard to hit Ovi… he’s WAY too big for the common thug to lay him out.

Looked like he completely missed his head. Perhaps Ovi should leave me some of that Russian Vodka.

From the replay above, it looked like Ovechkin threw his head backward in order to draw a call, and that Neil didn’t even hit him in the head.

If this is all true, Ovechkin throwing the refs under the bus is simply him using his star power to sell it to the league.

I fail to see the issue here. I am thinking OV would have had nothing to say about it had they won the game. 14 points back in your division behind a severely banged up Pittsburgh team. And you have Philly breathing down your neck. How does it feel to play in a real division for once? Can’t feast on Florida, Tampa, and Carolina and Winnipeg anymore to get you to your first round exit. You will have to earn that this time.

It feels like a mediocre team is still in 2nd place because they are fortunate enough to be in a division with the dregs of the former Atlantic division.

Neil is a talentless dirtbag. Good to see that backfire on him.

    • chuvalo - Dec 31, 2013 at 11:38 AM

Dirtbag? Neil’s played in the league 11 years and never been suspended one game…Talentless? He actually played in a Stanley Cup Finals. Something OV will NEVER do!

    • sabatimus - Dec 31, 2013 at 11:45 AM

Talentless? Have you ever seen Neil play?

There you have it. Another stupid comment by Ovi. They is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I said so about his comment on the bombings in Russia, and he just proved me right. Thank you, Ovi. 😕

Wow! Are you actually concerned about my typo? You are much smarter than that. Yes?

If you weren’t so critical of others I wouldn’t be so critical of your typing

Feels like a bit of karma after their gm claiming that blatant charge against Scenn was a good, clean hockey play.

    • lowenni - Dec 31, 2013 at 4:00 PM

That wasn’t a claim by the GM. The league determined it was a good, clean hockey play. It’s just a fact.

Quick, someone give OV Crosby’s pacifier and get him on the Whaaambulance. He’s quickly becoming the NHL’s resident crybaby in chief. In the words of #8, good clean hit.

    • cofran2004 - Dec 31, 2013 at 2:07 PM

He has a loooong way to go to be on criesby’s level.

    Instant Karma… nothing better.
