Brodeur stops 19 of 20, assists on game-winner as Devils beat Pens

Tuesday was the Martin Brodeur show in New Jersey.

The veteran netminder did it all against Pittsburgh at the Prudential Center, turning aside 19 shots while notching the second assist on Michael Ryder‘s game-winning tally as the Devils beat the Pens 2-1 to close out 2013.

Brodeur was nonchalant about registering the 44th assist of his career.

“I almost gave up the puck,” he told the Star-Ledger. “I got lucky on the assist. I’ll take it.”

Here’s the goal:

The win moved the Devils to 17-16-1 on the year, though it was not all smiles as veteran forward Patrik Elias needed to be helped off the ice following a first-period collision with Tanner Glass. Elias looked shaken up leaving the ice and didn’t return to the game, and head coach Peter DeBoer said the club would update his condition tomorrow morning.

The Devils are by far and always have been one of the most boring teams to watch and play against.

    • martysbetter - Dec 31, 2013 at 4:45 PM

Aww someone’s a little salty, you tearing up bud?

      • drewzducks - Dec 31, 2013 at 5:05 PM

One team managed 30 shots, the other only managed 19. Are the Pens gonna apologize for boring the Devils fans who ventured to the Pru ? Something tells me they’ll take “boring” the opposition to a tune of 3 titles and 2 finalists over the NEXT two decades.

      • pitpenguinsrulez - Dec 31, 2013 at 6:01 PM

I ain’t tearing up at all. The Devils are never exciting to watch. They lived by the trap for the past 20 years. Only a Devils fan could get excited watching them play.

      • nj666 - Dec 31, 2013 at 6:14 PM

“blah blah trap blah blah” come back with something original.

      • 950003cups - Dec 31, 2013 at 11:26 PM

        YOU CANT BEAT US!!
        Brodeur owns the Penguins!!
        Plain and simple.
Oh, and in the late 90’s the Penguins were playing a trap as well.

Hey! I heard there’s a good draft pool this year. Hurry up and tank the season like you’ve done 5 times already.

        Cheat #1 Lemieux 1984
        Cheat #2 Jagr 1990

        Cheat #3 Fleury 2003
        Cheat #4 Malkin 2004
        Cheat #5 Crosby 2005

Three years of tanking from 10 years ago and you won one cup.
        ONE!

        You can’t beat us!!!

      • pitpenguinsrulez - Jan 1, 2014 at 3:05 AM

Let’s see what happened 25 years ago on 12/31 …oh yeah that’s right Lemieux made a real ass out of Chris Terreri in net. Mario always him look stupid. You say Marty dominates the Pens which is true but lets not forget that the Pens have also chased Marty a good bit as well. Oh and by the way…How did feel seeing the 8th seed Pens knock out the 1st seed Devils in 1999?

      • 950003cups - Jan 1, 2014 at 10:35 AM

I forgot what that felt like. A year later we won another cup. Kinda erased all of 1999. I’m also as big a fan of Chris Terreri as you are of Sebastian Caron. Nobody could really remember much of him. We’ve had Martin Brodeur starting since 1994. That’s a loooooong time. He’s still playing great.

    • challer9 - Dec 31, 2013 at 6:22 PM

I find the Devils style of play boring as well, but come on bro. Come on here with your little Penguins username less than hour after your team loses to them and start whining? Take the loss like a man and move on.

      • drone501 - Jan 1, 2014 at 12:39 PM

i can handle the loss. we haven’ had too many losses lately. pens got to bury those shots when there is a empty net.

    • greenmtnboy31 - Jan 2, 2014 at 11:27 AM

I haven’t had the opportunity to play against them.

  2. steelers88 - Dec 31, 2013 at 4:51 PM

    HOUSE OF HORRORS.

  3. steelers88 - Dec 31, 2013 at 4:56 PM

    Martysbetter.
He has a point though. It is pretty tough to watch New Jersey Devils hockey games. Especially if your not a Devils fan. Most Penguins fans are used to putting up 3 to 4 goals a night.

    • nj666 - Dec 31, 2013 at 5:12 PM

we beat you with more shots on net, next time the penguins should step up. The only reason that game was boring to penguins fans is because they lost.

      • drone501 - Jan 1, 2014 at 12:42 PM

yeah, but we get to watch the pens play every game whereas your stuck with new jersey. the hockey team and the state, lmfao

    • martysbetter - Dec 31, 2013 at 5:35 PM

That sucks for you I guess, I enjoy watching my team hold one of the top offenses in the NHL to only 20 shots.

      • drone501 - Jan 2, 2014 at 12:27 AM

your teams hilight of the year so far. lol

    • drewzducks - Dec 31, 2013 at 6:06 PM

      Excluding the playoffs.

  4. steelers88 - Dec 31, 2013 at 5:14 PM

It will be interesting to see how the Penguins fare down the stretch. 19 of their last 41 games are against western conference opponents. They are 8-2 against the west this year so will see.

  5. steelers88 - Dec 31, 2013 at 5:50 PM

Fine you have fun with that. I’d take Crosby, Malkin, Neal, and Letang over anyone on the New Jersey Devils.

    • nj666 - Dec 31, 2013 at 6:17 PM

well thats pretty much your team for the next 5 seasons. considering how much money is wrapped up in those four plus fluery…

  6. steelers88 - Dec 31, 2013 at 5:58 PM

    nj666.
Like the times we beat you 3-0 and 3-2?
The only reason why you guys have two wins against the Pens this year is because it’s a house of horrors for the Penguins. They never play well in New Jersey. Maybe it’s a hex the Devils put on the Penguins players or maybe it’s something in the water.

    • devilsarethebest - Dec 31, 2013 at 6:34 PM

The 3-0 win was the first game for a completely new team for us, while you guys were the same team for last year. We were just all over the place. And there’s no denying we completely outplayed you in your 3-2 win but Fleury stood on his head for you guys. Please.

      • 950003cups - Dec 31, 2013 at 11:33 PM

And Schneider played his first game as a Devil.
I hear the Flyers are not too boring when they’re punching all your stars in the face and nobody has the balls to do anything about it except have Mary Lemieux cry like a baby. LOL!
Penguins are just a regular season team that can’t win the big one. See.. THATS boring. We went through that for years while you were busy tanking your seasons.

  7. steelers88 - Dec 31, 2013 at 6:10 PM

The Devils won today because they got away with unlimited interference.

    • nj666 - Dec 31, 2013 at 6:17 PM

      of course it is.

      • 950003cups - Dec 31, 2013 at 11:35 PM

Wahhhhh!!!! Can’t wait to hear Mary Lemieux scream and cry “It’s no fair”

  8. President Charles Logan - Dec 31, 2013 at 6:42 PM

Devils fans are nothing but Closet Rangers fans who cant afford the toll on the ferry across the River to Manhattan

    • martysbetter - Dec 31, 2013 at 7:50 PM

Who the hell would want to be a Rangers fan?

      • whammy71 - Dec 31, 2013 at 10:19 PM

Who the hell would want to be a Devil’s fan????

        WHAMMY!!!!!!

      • 950003cups - Dec 31, 2013 at 11:36 PM

Ahhhh listen to the Wild fan. $200,000,000 for two above avg players, and you can’t win a game. Zip yer lip till you win a game.

  9. steelers88 - Dec 31, 2013 at 7:00 PM

    Devilsarethebest.
See you in the Playoffs oh wait…. You guys won’t even be in the Playoffs. Whoops.

    • drewzducks - Dec 31, 2013 at 7:09 PM

Hmmm, sort of like a certain team that occasionally plays at Heinz Field.

    • nj666 - Dec 31, 2013 at 7:10 PM

will you blame the refs when you lose those too?

  10. steelers88 - Dec 31, 2013 at 8:19 PM

At least we did better than the Giants and the Jets.

    • whammy71 - Dec 31, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Ummmmm….the Jets were 8-8 too. Should know your facts before you run your trap.

  11. nothanksimdriving123 - Dec 31, 2013 at 10:20 PM

Nice to see Marty break out of his scoring slump, albeit with only an assist. Dude still hasn’t scored a goal all season. Pace is slowing in his old age. Might not have more than 2 or 3 good years left. Can he get to Tom Barrasso’s career regular season record of 48 assists?

    • 950003cups - Dec 31, 2013 at 11:38 PM

      Absolutely!!

  12. ribs108 - Jan 1, 2014 at 1:06 AM

Can anyone truly say that Luongo, Ward, Smith and especially Price, is playing better this season than Martin Brodeur? HE should be Canada’s Olympic goalie! I know he hasn’t been stellar in the playoffs recently, but now that he’s being pushed as a #1 goalie, his pride seems to be allowing him to step it up. I’m sure he’d give Canada their best chance at gold. Go Marty!!

    • joey4id - Jan 1, 2014 at 2:23 AM

with a save percentage of .907….. I don’t think so. Price .930, WJC experience Luongo .920 + Olympic experience and Fleury .920, of Smith .912. His chances are slim my friend.

      • nj666 - Jan 1, 2014 at 12:20 PM

yeah brodeur clearly doesn’t have as much experience as those guys….

      • joey4id - Jan 1, 2014 at 1:11 PM

yeah! those other guys clearly don’t have a better save percentage than brodeur.
