Penguins activate Scuderi, place Malkin on IR

The Pittsburgh Penguins are probably used to getting a mixture of good and bad injury news, and Sunday was no different. While they’re welcoming Rob Scuderi back, they also placed Evgeni Malkin on the IR retroactive to Dec. 14.

Scuderi, 34, missed the last 29 games with an ankle injury. Malkin, 27, is struggling with a knee/lower-body injury.

To the Penguins’ credit, they continue to roll with injury punches. They’ve won five of the six games they’ve played since Malkin has been on the shelf. They hope to improve their 28-11-1 record against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday.

The Penguins’ battered defense seems to have an improved outlook overall, as this optimistic Kris Letang update can attest:

Scuderi didn’t look too good on Dubinsky’s goal, but neither did Jokinen. Bad goal! Scuderi is going to need a few games before he’s back to full form.

Not as bad as Maata got beat on the next goal 😦

Yeah! Niskanen give away at the blue line then Maata looked like he came out of his skates on the move from Tropp.

Malkin is eligible to come off the IR for next game so there isn’t really any change with that happening. And judging by Geno’s crashing of James Neal post game interview Friday night he isn’t having any problem getting around and is in good spirits.

Maata has had a tough couple games. Scuds will find his game. Optimistic about a Scuds/Tanger pairing in the near future. Good game so far.

I guess people can put their boners away on Olli Matta for now.

The kid is 19 and has been playing 1st pairing minutes. At some point most would expect that it would take a toll. When the D gets healthy he will be getting 3rd pairing min. and I would guess he will be playing much better again.

Lights out! James “The Real Deal” Neal. What a release.

The Penguins are going to be pretty scary when everyone gets healthy.

#71 will be back next game. Your info is goofy

Geez. Give the kid a break will you? He’s 19 years old. I can count on one hand the number of times he’s looked like a teenager this season. He’s going to be special.

You can do whatever you want with your boner… but I’m at #FullMastforMaatta
