Bruins’ Seidenberg done for season with torn ACL/MCL

The Bruins will have a huge hole to fill on their blue line for the rest of the season.

The team announced defenseman Dennis Seidenberg will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee during their win against Ottawa last night. Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said it’ll take him 6-8 months to recover from the injury.

Seidenberg was hurt after getting his leg tangled up with Sens forward Cory Conacher. He left the game and did not return and, as we’ve found out today, for good reason.

In 34 games this season, Seidenberg had one goal and nine assists while averaging over 21 minutes per game. Losing him for the season after losing Andrew Ference over the summer in free agency to Edmonton makes the Bruins defense look very green.

The Bruins have three steady veterans in captain Zdeno Chara, Johnny Boychuk, and Adam McQuaid. More will be asked of all three of them as well as younger guys like Torey Krug and Matt Bartkowski. Those guys have played admirably this season, but none have been as steady as Seidenberg.

The Bruins recalled defenseman Zach Trotman on an emergency basis to fill Seidenberg’s spot in the meantime and sent goalie Niklas Svedberg back to Providence.

    Oh crap. Huge loss.

  2. titansbro - Dec 28, 2013 at 3:37 PM

They have some good young d-men but it feels kinda like they gotta make a trade now. This sucks. Seidenberg is a fave of mine.

I think regular season they are in good shape but I think you need a vet in there for the playoffs. Seidenberg puts up huge minutes and has been a beast in the playoffs for them in the past. Huge loss!

yesterday all the bruins fans were gloating over dupuis’ torn acl. now this happens? karma man.

    • lowenni - Dec 28, 2013 at 3:51 PM

No one was gloating over Dupuis’ injury. No one wishes that on anybody, no matter who the team, player, or fan is. I don’t know what you’re talking about.

      • claudegirwho - Dec 28, 2013 at 4:14 PM

Kinda like how they were all saying orpik got what he deserved?? Class is one thing bruin fans don’t know a thing about. Even Philly fans were saying it sucked what happened to orpik

      • whammy71 - Dec 28, 2013 at 7:57 PM

Then you don’t read to many PHT articles. Look at the one about Duper’s injury. In there you’ll find typical jackass Bruins fans gloating!

Karma coming right back at you guys. Wishing for a few more on your squad! Happy New Year!

    • theskinsman - Dec 28, 2013 at 4:16 PM

No sane person gloats over an injury. You’re confused at best. This is bad, I hope they give the young guys a shot before trading that talent away for another vet.

Jesus. I know Pens fans have a legendary persecution complex, but this literally didn’t even happen. Shut up, runhigh. Just… shut up, you awful excuse for a hockey fan.

      • whammy71 - Dec 28, 2013 at 8:02 PM

Read the Duper thread and you will easily be proven wrong!

      • govtminion - Dec 28, 2013 at 8:41 PM

I’m sure some B’s fans acted like idiots (it happens with every fan base)… I want to know how it makes Pens fans like runhigh and whammy71 look any better for them to gloat here about it. If you truly want to lord over idiot Bruins fans, be the bigger man and don’t make comments about being happy to see a guy suffer a major injury.

  5. lowenni - Dec 28, 2013 at 3:50 PM

Wow. That hurts. One of the most underrated defenseman in the league, and the Bruins second best. Wonder if they’re going to make a trade now to either replace him or at least bring in some depth because even though they’re a great team they just aren’t as good without him for that long.

  6. phillyphanatic77 - Dec 28, 2013 at 4:23 PM

Damn that’s a huge loss. Seidenberg has been a consistent performer since he arrived in Boston. I would’ve loved if Philly had never given him up. Just an excellent #2 and all-around player. Hoping for a quick and speed recovery for a class act.

  7. pastabelly - Dec 28, 2013 at 4:24 PM

Young defenseman will step up. They will miss Seidenberg though. As far as trades go, maybe for depth.

  8. joey4id - Dec 28, 2013 at 4:27 PM

This hurts the Bs no doubt Hopefully someone can step up to fill the void. BTW, Bs fans wrote that Dupuis’ injury was all about Karma because he slashed Kelly and broke his leg. Is this injury also Karma?

    • killerpgh - Dec 28, 2013 at 4:35 PM

It must be Karma for the Vernon Fiddler hit. Accidents never happen. It’s always Karma…. Shanny didn’t suspend him so Karma took it upon herself to correct the issue. At least that what some were saying about Dupuis.

  9. live4hockey - Dec 28, 2013 at 4:34 PM

I would t call it gloating, but go back and read the comments…there were some karma comments, he is right about that. I’d call both nothing other than plain old bad luck.

  10. pastabelly - Dec 28, 2013 at 4:44 PM

One person said karma on Dupuis even though a few of us mentioned Dupuis broke Kelly’s ankle with a slash.

    • lordstanley65 - Dec 28, 2013 at 5:01 PM

Right. What did Seidenberg ever do to deserve any “karma”?

  11. amityvillefun - Dec 28, 2013 at 5:30 PM

Seidenberg is vastly underrated. The man is a defensive workhorse. Core Bruin on this team for sure. Ugh. Man, the injuries are crazy this season.

Well, hopefully Dougie Hamilton steps up when he returns.

Get well soon Dennis, you are one of my favorite Bruins.

    • pastabelly - Dec 28, 2013 at 5:38 PM

Yup, Hamilton is going to have to come into his own this year. The talent is there and he looks tougher and bigger this year.

  12. benrob99 - Dec 28, 2013 at 9:16 PM

I’m not happy that a good and talented player suffered a bad injury.

Then again I’m not a bruins fan… so that makes sense.

    Boston = trash

    • drewzducks - Dec 29, 2013 at 2:09 AM

Your mom ( aka trash whore) raised you well bennob.

  13. titansbro - Dec 28, 2013 at 10:41 PM

It’s a hockey game nitwits. It’s crazy how much you all have in common yet you call each other trash & classless. Lol.

  14. nhstateline - Dec 29, 2013 at 8:05 AM

Are they going to make a trade ? Not right away. They can play kids for a long while and it’s going to be hard to acquire the kind of player people would like because of the cap. They have the young assets to do it but can’t take on more than $4 mil. Think someone like Matt Hendricks or Jeff Schultz or nothing at all. As said above, this will hurt more in the playoffs in minutes and now they lack a shutdown d pair. Mostly I feel badly for Dennis Seidenberg, he works very hard and is a very classy guy. If he was on your team, you’d probably feel the same about him.
