Not so Duper: Dupuis (ACL surgery) could be done for year

The news is in on Pascal Dupuis‘ injured knee, and it isn’t good.

The Pittsburgh forward — injured prior to the holiday break in a collision with Sidney Crosby — damaged his ACL and will require surgery, the Penguins announced on Friday.

The club also announced Dupuis may be out for the remainder of the season, adding there’s no timetable for return.

Dupuis, 34, was in the midst of another solid season with Pittsburgh prior to getting hurt, scoring seven goals and 20 points through 39 games. The veteran winger had found great success playing on a line with Crosby and Chris Kunitz over the last few years, and enjoyed a tremendous lockout-shortened ’13 season in which he scored 20 goals in 48 games.

This summer, the Pens and Dupuis agreed to a four-year, $15 million contract extension.

As mentioned above, Dupuis was hurt on a freak collision with Crosby during a 5-0 loss to Ottawa. Here’s the play in question:

Dupuis will now be shelved alongside Pittsburgh teammates Bean Bennett, Andrew Ebbett, Kris Letang, Paul Martin, Jayson Megna, Rob Scuderi and Tomas Vokoun, all currently on IR.

Sucks for Pittsburgh but good news for Montreal and their playoff hopes! GO HABS!!!

  2. steelers88 - Dec 27, 2013 at 1:04 PM

Not a surprise here. So I’m guessing that Despres will get traded. The Penguins are going to need to make a trade for a top 6 guy. Even when the Penguins forwards were healthy they didn’t really have great depth.

    • ntvd7 - Dec 27, 2013 at 5:37 PM

They just signed him to a four year deal

He’s been rock solid for them for the past few years

WHY would they trade a guy that good in both zones?????

    • bencia823 - Dec 27, 2013 at 8:36 PM

When healthy, Beau Bennett plays on the 3rd line. I’d imagine that he will fill in for Dupuis, or replace Jussi in the Malkin line while Jussi takes duper’s spot.

  3. bcsteele - Dec 27, 2013 at 1:08 PM

Wow…I was complaining about the Blues injuries coming on…guess I’ll count my blessings instead. On the bright side Pens fans, you’re still killing it with the exception of a few beatings.

  4. pitpenguinsrulez - Dec 27, 2013 at 1:12 PM

Steelers88 I would not trade Despres the kid has been playing excellent since being inserted into the line up. I’d much rather trade Letang. I have zero care for him.

    • jtowme - Dec 28, 2013 at 10:44 AM

Agreed…Letang is a liability in my mind…large cap hit that gives the puck away a lot.

  5. steelers88 - Dec 27, 2013 at 1:13 PM

    bcsteele.
No one is going to feel sorry for the Penguins. The Penguins are actually getting healthier. Malkin should be back Sunday or Wednesday. Glass and Orpik will be back today and Scuderi will be back soon. Sucks that Dupuis will be out for the season though.

  6. thecheeman - Dec 27, 2013 at 1:16 PM

If I was a Penguins fan I’d probably want to see less funny wordplay in my headline on this story.

  7. sjsharks66 - Dec 27, 2013 at 1:38 PM

Dupuis is my favorite player on the Pens. This sucks..

  8. jpelle82 - Dec 27, 2013 at 1:43 PM

methot must be thinking what dewey cox’s dad thought the whole time…

    • sjsblitz - Dec 27, 2013 at 1:45 PM

      HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!!

  9. steelers88 - Dec 27, 2013 at 1:44 PM

    pitpenguinsrulzez.
The Penguins are not going to trade Letang he just signed a new contract and I believe he has a no trade clause in his contract. I know Josh Yohe said that the Penguins value Matta, Letang, Sammuelson, Dumolin, Puliot, and even Bortuzzo over Despres. The Penguins could trade Niskanen as well.

    • hazlydose - Dec 27, 2013 at 6:08 PM

The NTC doesn’t kick in until the new contract does. Right now he is finishing the last year of his current contract.

  10. charastein - Dec 27, 2013 at 1:45 PM

The Bruins, somehow, are to blame for this.

    • whammy71 - Dec 27, 2013 at 2:09 PM

no, no, no…..it is actually Orpik’s fault. He legally hit someone and then didn’t follow some sort of unwritten code…therefore Don Cherry put a hex on the Pens and Duper took the fall.

      Very simple.

I actually saw Duper Christmas Eve at our church. The dude had a mighty big limp going on. Didn’t look good.

Its called karma. He broke Chris Kelly’s ankle on a slash and it came back to him.

    • joey4id - Dec 27, 2013 at 3:09 PM

Yeah! Do you have any idea what’s in store for Thornton?

      • drone501 - Dec 27, 2013 at 4:49 PM

i think were talking about a big hurt.

    • joey4id - Dec 27, 2013 at 3:10 PM

League doesn’t need Shanahan or policing. Karma will do the job.

      • bsfan77 - Dec 27, 2013 at 5:47 PM

No one on the Penns could take Thornton down. Engs might give him a run but would come up short

    • pastabelly - Dec 27, 2013 at 3:14 PM

Yes, Dupuis did break Kelly’s ankle on a slash. Not sure why got 18 thumbs down on that one. I suppose it’s from Penguins fans who still believe all of Matt Cooke’s hits were clean and same with Orpik, Neal, Crosby, Dupuis, et al. Tortorella may have the biggest mouth in the league, but he was right about the Penguins, even though he was fined $20K for it.

      • dirt2013 - Dec 27, 2013 at 3:44 PM

You are right the Pens are the only team in the league with questionable hits. When you are done with your pasta go get a pair of glasses.

      • pens5829 - Dec 27, 2013 at 7:25 PM

Golfsox78 and Pasatbelly. Pull your tampons, clean yourself, and stop your whining. You sound like Tom Brady.

      • shaundre93 - Dec 27, 2013 at 9:11 PM

        So they sound like winners?

    • jtowme - Dec 28, 2013 at 10:56 AM

KARMA=Krap Asserted by Real Massachusetts Arseh0les.

So every time something bad happens to anyone, they should look back into the past to see what they did to deserve it. I wonder what Chris Kelly did to deserve his injury.

  12. sclairebear - Dec 27, 2013 at 3:46 PM

Only the Bruins’ Ministry of Propaganda (NESN) and their faithful followers, the Bruins’ fans, have called that a slash. NESN carefully edited that clip to show Dupuis’ stick hitting Kelly’s ankle to make it seem like a deliberate slash. If you watch the unedited clip, you will see that Dupius is actually swinging at the puck, not deliberately making contact with Kelly’s ankle. Of course the Bruins .

    • matt14gg - Dec 27, 2013 at 5:34 PM

You are either lying or blind if you don’t think Dupuis slashed Kelly on purpose. I used to think Dupuis was a classy player. I was wrong. Sucks for him he’s done for the year. Hopefully we don’t have to hear his name again.

    • bsfan77 - Dec 27, 2013 at 5:52 PM

Funny that the puck was in front of Kelly when Dupuis 2 handed him. Funny that every replay, not just NESN, all looked the same. Take off your rose colored glasses Penns fans. I am sure the Flower and the rest of the team will once again choke in the playoffs.

  13. lilgurgi - Dec 27, 2013 at 3:59 PM

Teams go through this everyone year. Detroit has been hit this year by injuries pretty hard as well. Last year the Flyers only had 2 of their starting 6 D-men from Game 1 finish the season. It happens. It sucks, but part of the bright side is that you can get to see some of your call-ups from the minors and where they’re at.

  14. penvik - Dec 27, 2013 at 5:23 PM

This actually helps the Penguins. It won’t allow bylsma to put Dupuis with Crosby, this instantly makes the team better.

  15. polishblue - Dec 27, 2013 at 5:29 PM

Acl injuries suck…alot…I had it too.

Hate the team and the players on it but get healthy Dupius.

    Signed,

Rangers fan whose goin to the game in DC tonight

  16. bsfan77 - Dec 27, 2013 at 5:54 PM

Maybe the league should suspend Crosby for his hit on Dupuis! Lol:-D

  17. golfsox78 - Dec 27, 2013 at 8:56 PM

The biggest cry baby in the NHL is Crosby. No one whines more than him. He’s talented but he needs to take the tampon out to steal a phrase from the eloquent pens5829. Thorton did get his. He’s sitting out 16 games total. Personally, he deserves it. But cry baby Crosby is annoying with his constant complaining. And Thorton will probably not touch the ice that much the rest of the year. The young kids on the Bs are filling in really well.

  18. benrob99 - Dec 28, 2013 at 4:16 AM

Leave it to Boston fans to troll a thread to gloat about someone getting injured.

    Boston = trash
