Video: Confusion surrounds JVR’s shootout goal

Dec 19, 2013, 11:01 PM EDT

There was a strange scene in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ eventual 2-1 shootout win against the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday, as it was unclear if James van Riemsdyk beat Mike Smith in the opening round:

The NHL seemed incapable of confirming or denying the tally, so one could say that the tie goes to the runner:

In the first round of the Coyotes/Maple Leafs shootout, video review was inconclusive in determining whether James van Riemsdyk’s shot completely crossed the goal line. Therefore, the referee’s call on the ice stands – good goal Toronto.

Smith provided the Canadian Press’ Stephen Whyno with a sardonic quip on the matter.

“I guess there was only one guy in this whole building that saw it go in,” Smith said.

Van Riemsdyk and Joffrey Lupul ended up being Toronto’s goal scorers in that shootout, while Mikkel Boedker was the only guy to score a shootout tally for Phoenix.

If video review is inconclusive, and the ref isn’t 100% sure, they should simply play the shot over again.

A do-over. Yeah! Just like in the school yard when we were kids. :-)

Minor whine: the commercial was longer than the replay video.
