Video: Dustin Brown ejected for kneeing, Tomas Hertl won’t return (update)

Dec 19, 2013, 11:30 PM EDT

Los Angeles Kings captain Dustin Brown received a five-minute major and game misconduct for kneeing San Jose Sharks rookie Tomas Hertl on Thursday.

Updated with video:

Update (12:35 a.m. ET): Sources including CSNBayArea.com’s Kevin Kurz report that Hertl won’t return.

CSNBayArea.com’s Brodie Brazil passes along this screencap:

source:

Brown, 29, has delivered his fair share of controversial hits. He has one suspension (two games in April) on his record.

Hertl, 20, was helped to the Sharks dressing room following the collision. It’s unclear at this moment how serious this issue may be.

  1. sharksfan754 - Dec 19, 2013 at 11:34 PM

Man I hope Hertl isn’t seriously injured.

    • uscthom78 - Dec 20, 2013 at 2:59 AM

So there 5 people who openly admit that they are glad he got injured. Thats pathetic.

      • comeonnowguys - Dec 20, 2013 at 10:25 AM

        Because old-time hockey!

        /sarc

  2. sjsharks66 - Dec 19, 2013 at 11:35 PM

This is the way I see it. This MAY have been an accident and a bad call on the major. The fact that it is Brown and he has a history with “accidental” knee’s on players, i can’t seem to give him the benefit. Just look at the incident in Phx a few years ago. That was also an “accident”.

If Hertl is injured I except 5 given his elbow suspension. If Hertl is fine, then I suppose it will just be another “accident” that Brown cannot seem to avoid in his entire career.

    • endusersolutions2013 - Dec 20, 2013 at 12:25 AM

He did try and go for both Jaden Schwartz’s head then knee in the 1st round last year, fortunately missed both. He had two clear head shots in back to back games towards the end of th season last year, and somehow only got 1 game.

The replay did not look like he deserved the 5 min or game, and that’s what a history may well have done.

    • ethanmacleod1685 - Dec 20, 2013 at 5:28 AM

      Totally agree with you sjshark

    • joey4id - Dec 20, 2013 at 9:17 AM

So “This is the way I see it. This MAY have been an accident and a bad call on the major” but you can’t give him the benefit. Is that because you’re a sharks fan? I wonder which way you would lean if you were kings fan.

      • comeonnowguys - Dec 20, 2013 at 10:34 AM

Joey, I’m not a Sharks fan, and I agree with everything he said. Got anything besides “you’re a homer?”

And no, I don’t hate the Kings.

    • comeonnowguys - Dec 20, 2013 at 10:26 AM

The fact that it is Brown and he has a history with “accidental” knee’s on players, i can’t seem to give him the benefit.

      There it is. Right there.

  3. lowenni - Dec 19, 2013 at 11:37 PM

Ugh. I think Dustin Brown’s a great player (although in the midst of a bad season), and an even better leader, but boy is he dirty sometimes. I don’t think they’re intentional, but he has to learn to control himself and place his hits better because this has happened too many times with him. I respect him, but these suspensions and misconducts and dirty plays are very unbecoming of who he is as a person, player, and captain.

    • charlieconway96 - Dec 19, 2013 at 11:51 PM

As a Kings fan, I couldn’t agree more. Well put sir.

      • areaman714 - Dec 20, 2013 at 12:54 AM

        Not very Captain-like . . .

      • dannymac17 - Dec 20, 2013 at 1:22 AM

Even though you arent a Kings fan. Charlie Conway 96…hmmmm I wonder where I heard that from. Oh yea.

        Be quiet peasant.

      James Neal of the West

  4. esracerx46 - Dec 19, 2013 at 11:38 PM

That image looks weird. Brown facing the opposite of the other 2, with stick straight up in the air. Hmmm. Hope all is well with Hertl.

  5. btlpper68 - Dec 19, 2013 at 11:41 PM

Fellow sharks fans hold their breath

  6. jhaegs - Dec 19, 2013 at 11:45 PM

    @sjsharks66
    *expect…

D Bag, I mean D Brown, is good at making cheap shots look like accidents.

  7. sjsharks66 - Dec 19, 2013 at 11:52 PM

Jhaegs, i hate typing on my phone. Haha good catch. ;)

  8. jhaegs - Dec 19, 2013 at 11:58 PM

At first I thought you were trying to say you “accept” a 5 game suspension. Lol

  9. jhaegs - Dec 19, 2013 at 11:59 PM

    @charliespazzway96

I’m on the PHT app, so I can’t tell. Was your comment in response to mine? ;)

  10. areaman714 - Dec 20, 2013 at 12:04 AM

Dustin Brown will be added as an addendum . . .

  11. ronniethec - Dec 20, 2013 at 1:10 AM

No fans cry like snarks fans. Final 4-1 Kings. Keep crying.

    • sjsharks66 - Dec 20, 2013 at 1:49 AM

I love this Snarks insult. It’s a typical LA insult.

      • cybernetikghost - Dec 20, 2013 at 2:15 AM

Where’s the Ryan Clowe video? I love the one where he plays while still on the bench. Classic…

      • qauzaq - Dec 20, 2013 at 3:04 AM

Not a big fan of people who dig up incidents from the past like this to make an argument. I don’t think will ever hear the end of the Brown/Rosival incident…Im not saying Brown hasn’t ever made a bad play but you could find videos of any player where they make questionable hits. It’s time to move on. L.A isn’t a dirty team and neither is SJ, lets move on to the next game.

      • ethanmacleod1685 - Dec 20, 2013 at 5:30 AM

        Sjshark66 = on a roll :)

      • comeonnowguys - Dec 20, 2013 at 10:53 AM

q, in this case it’s completely relevant. It establishes a pattern that makes the whole “accidental” argument tough to use. Much like Torres, who never means to hit people high, but always seems to anyway.

      • endusersolutions2013 - Dec 20, 2013 at 10:59 AM

I’ll see your clips and raise you some;)

      • cybernetikghost - Dec 20, 2013 at 11:04 AM

Also, note that you don’t take the time to add in all of things that Brown has to deal with for playing the way he does. There are plenty of people gunning for him and he takes it in stride. And what does Dwight King have to do with all of this?

    • sjsharks01 - Dec 22, 2013 at 2:24 AM

Ronnie always types snarks instead of sharks and every time I laugh at how stupid he/she looks doing it.

  12. dannymac17 - Dec 20, 2013 at 1:17 AM

Dude. Look at the way their heads were pointed before the collision occurred. You can be serious thinking he did this on purpose.

    • areaman714 - Dec 20, 2013 at 1:57 AM

Dude. Look at his history . . . get a clue.

      • cybernetikghost - Dec 20, 2013 at 2:17 AM

History doesn’t mean that he did it on purpose, it just means that he is going to get called for it. You can still look at the video and create our own opinion. Or, you know, don’t I guess…

  13. blomfeld - Dec 20, 2013 at 1:21 AM

YES, THEIR FLAGS ARE LOWERED !

Could Dustin Brown = Lord Nelson ?

“There are three things young gentlemen, which you are constantly to bear in mind. Firstly, you must always implicitly obey orders, without attempting to form any opinion of your own respecting their propriety. Secondly, you must consider every man your enemy who speaks ill of the King. And thirdly, you must hate a Frenchman as you do the devil.”

Friends, tonight we defeated the Sharks in ‘no’ uncertain terms, lead by our ‘glorious and selfless’ captain who did ‘that’ which needed to be done, without hesitancy or remorse. God speed Captain Brown and praise be.

    GO KINGS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • 19to77 - Dec 20, 2013 at 2:19 AM

Dude, if you don’t admit a cheapshot when you see it, you’re a bad fan of the game. Period. I know you’re a fanatic. I actually respect that. I love diehard fans. But when you start just plain lying about or justifying what your own damn eyes tell you, you’re a bad hockey fan. You’re disrespecting the ideal of the sport as much as Brown does when he goes knee-on-knee instead of manning up and throwing the hit clean. He threw a crap hit. He deserved his punishment. Get over it. If Hertl had done it to Brown you’d be demanding a suspension. Don’t be a shallow hypocrite.

      • rocoop - Dec 20, 2013 at 2:51 AM

Duuuuuude….Manning up??? Duuuuude…..Nobody cares what or who you respect

      • 19to77 - Dec 20, 2013 at 4:28 AM

I’ll just wait ’till someone knee-on-knees one of your best players to see what tune you sing, then.

    • endusersolutions2013 - Dec 20, 2013 at 10:55 AM

Blomfeld, you are WAY off on this one. I am an amateur historian, son of one who taught till his eyesight got so bad he could no longer read, at age 85. Lectured internationally.

And anyone who has studied history knows the abuses of the British armed forces during the time of Nelson through into at least the 1800s. There is no legal or moral requirement to obey an illegal order, period.

Do you understand Nuremberg? (I vast only following orders, ja)

      • blomfeld - Dec 21, 2013 at 12:39 AM

        ‘Things Were Done’ …

Sorry friend, but I’m not ‘way off’ as you say. Rather, on the contrary and with all due respect, I would submit that it is ‘you’ who is way off. It’s quite easy for you to sit here today in our comfortable world and cast judgement upon those who went before us so many years before and heroically did ‘that’ which the times required. Of course the Royal Navy was brutal in terms of ‘discipline and punishment’ of it’s own. However that was the price of victory and freedom, a commodity which is completely lost on today’s shallow, narcissistic and materialistic world …

  14. areaman714 - Dec 20, 2013 at 1:59 AM

Being a complete douche is what needed to be done? That is Skid row logic for you . . .

  15. jhaegs - Dec 20, 2013 at 2:01 AM

Hey blomfeld, I guess you’re saying it was his duty to take out the knee of a rookie having a great season? That C on his sweater must stand for “classy”…

  16. westof1club - Dec 20, 2013 at 2:20 AM

That’s the sack licking blowhard likes to heap on his North American heroes. One thing can be said about a certain Russian captain – he’s good enough a hockey player to use his skills and not his stick, knee, elbow, and/or fists to neutralize his competition.

    • ironyisadeadscene - Dec 20, 2013 at 6:57 AM

Tell that to Tim Gleason’s knee

    • hazlydose - Dec 20, 2013 at 12:38 PM

      And Sergei Gonchar’s knee

  17. cybernetikghost - Dec 20, 2013 at 2:32 AM

I think the call could have gone either way. Hertz had his knee out just as much but Brown has the history and that will be the deciding factor more often than not.

    • cybernetikghost - Dec 20, 2013 at 2:34 AM

*Hertl. Someone needs to inform auto correct that there is an NHL.

  18. jhaegs - Dec 20, 2013 at 3:00 AM

Hertl had his knee out!?!? Hertl was looking up ice. Brown turned toward him from the point and clipped him near the center of the blue line. He had plenty if time to put himself in the right position. He didn’t stick his knee out, but he sure as hell didn’t try to avoid the knee-on-knee. I don’t like either team so I’m not blinded by homer glasses.

  19. muckleflugga - Dec 20, 2013 at 3:03 AM

brown’s innocent on all charges except the lord nelson [ and the king's arms ]

even as in the kunitz on lundqvist blow-up, opposing forces can collide free of malicious intent…no player in their right mind would go knee on knee, deliberately…

not without fine chocolates, good wine, candle light, soft carpet…shag…

  20. jhaegs - Dec 20, 2013 at 3:17 AM

Bringing up the past… well you’re right, since Brown’s elbowing suspension happened ALL THE WAY back at the beginning of this calendar year, we should just forget he did it. You sound like Sharks fans defending Torres…

  21. sabatimus - Dec 20, 2013 at 7:05 AM

“Almost missed ‘em”. Gotta love these homer announcers.

    • cybernetikghost - Dec 20, 2013 at 11:16 AM

Jim Fox is a homer, but he’s a color commentator, he has the right. But keep your insults in the singular, that’s Bob Miller to the side of him. Hall of fame announcer. Not just “another homer announcer.”

  22. titansbro - Dec 20, 2013 at 7:20 AM

Seemed like incidental contact to me. Sucks the guy got hurt. Neal’s knee on Marchand’s dome was 10 times worse.

  23. tripps3 - Dec 20, 2013 at 7:28 AM

I’m not a Kings fan – but man that was a pretty weak call

  24. mikeinindy - Dec 20, 2013 at 8:26 AM

He may be the dirtiest player in the game today. That alone should remove him from any chance of playing olympic hockey, would be ashamed to have him on a team representing my country.

    • ron05342 - Dec 20, 2013 at 10:14 AM

No, Raffi Torres gets that nod.

    • cybernetikghost - Dec 20, 2013 at 11:19 AM

I love when people think that Brown is in the running for dirtiest player in the league. It paints a picture of someone locked away in a dark, drippy room with only Sharks blogs as their insight to the outside world.

  25. joey4id - Dec 20, 2013 at 9:21 AM

I’m not a fan of the Kings or Sharks. Looks to me that was not intentional. It was a bad hockey collision that will occasionally happen.

  26. hosewater2 - Dec 20, 2013 at 10:17 AM

If you’re gonna showboat, things like this will happen to you, just sayin.

  29. flash8910 - Dec 20, 2013 at 2:11 PM

Brown is the consummate team player. He will do whatever it takes to ensure that Jones wins the Calder.

    • blomfeld - Dec 21, 2013 at 12:44 AM

or in other words … Brown’s actions last night were very ‘Nelsonian’ in no uncertain terms …

  30. surfoside4life - Dec 20, 2013 at 2:44 PM

you wanna hear another joke?? northern california hahahahahahahahaha

  31. sporkov - Dec 20, 2013 at 7:46 PM

Imagine that, Dustin Brown does not understand that his play is dirty and Sutter has the same mindset. Shocking!!!

  32. macdega - Dec 21, 2013 at 9:32 PM

You’d take Brown on your team in a heartbeat.
