Video: Kyle Quincey ejected for boarding Ryan Getzlaf

Dec 17, 2013, 8:47 PM EST

The Detroit Red Wings have been left shorthanded thanks largely to injuries, but Kyle Quincey opened the door to a possible suspension thanks to a hit from behind on Anaheim Ducks star Ryan Getzlaf on Tuesday.

Quincey received a five-minute major and game misconduct for boarding on this play:

The early word is that Getzlaf, 28, might shake this off. He was able to return after getting stitched up, the OC Register’s Eric Stephens reports.

Still, Getzlaf already fought off an upper-body injury this season, so there’s some concern even with a rapid return.

Quincey was suspended one game in April 2012, so that might not help the 28-year-old’s cause in avoiding a suspension. Getzlaf’s return might help, on the other hand.

Mr. Quincey, how much would you like to contribute to the NHLPA emergency fund?

  2. sjsharks66 - Dec 17, 2013 at 9:13 PM

    2 games

idk, Quincey was suspended for 1 game in 2012, and Getzlaf was injured on the play tonight. Could be more.

Wison of the Caps can travel with Quicey to NY

2 games? Repeat offender? I hope 6 or more. We can’t have this in the game.

Neal is a repeat offender and got 5. I doubt 6 or more.

Actually it looks like Getzlaf’s sold it a bit, which resulted in an injury. Cross check, yes! Enough force to throw a big body like Getzlaf’s into the boards? I’m not so sure. I still think he will get 2 games if the league looks at it.

LOL! Yes! he purposely propelled himself into the dasher, and bite his lip for visual effect or he had a blood pack in his mouth. Schenn also jumped head first into the boards and for good measure he fell to the ice a couple of times on his way to the bench. Actors! Eh!

      i agree

Im not saying he made himself bleed. Just saying he went down a little easy and that caused himself to hit his face on the boards. I wouldn’t think it was unfair for a suspension, this one ( unlike the Schenn incident ) looks a little soft.

I am glad Getzlaf was able to return and did not have a serious injury.

Getzlaf appeared to jump slightly, which helped launch his face into the boards. However, Quincey needs at least 5 off on this one.

Are you guys kidding with the suspension talk? Quincey cross checked him lightly into the boards and Getzlaf lost his balance and got cut in the mouth. He’s a big girl, he’ll be just fine. As much as I hate Kyle Qunicey, the 5 minute major and a game misconduct he received seems like an adequate punishment. I’d like to see suspensions given out to guys who actually injure players enough to cause them to miss games, like that Gudas kid that gave Franzen a concussion and was completely ignored.

    • joey4id - Dec 17, 2013 at 10:02 PM

Yes! The rule book clearly states that no supplemental discipline shall be applied when the player that was cross checked into the boards is a “big girl”. :-)

    • sabatimus - Dec 17, 2013 at 11:33 PM

Your bias and misogyny are pathetic. But I agree about Gudas: he shouldn’t even be in the league, and hopefully at the rate he’s going he won’t be.

i agree…as Getzlaf is stopping his skates catch and his feet get caught up behind him which takes him off balance and makes him fall into the boards. Quincy was just getting his hands and stick up to ride him into the boards in attempt to take him off the puck – a play which happens every time 2 players are heading into the corner for a loose puck. any wings fan can assure you this was unintentional since Quincy rarely takes the body. i dont see a suspension coming but who knows with Shanahan…

It was not a powerful hit, but it was in a dangerous area and caused a ton of damage. Granted I only saw it in slow mo, but it looks like he barley touches him.

  9. tlndma - Dec 18, 2013 at 9:59 AM

No matter how hard Quincey hit him, it was directly on the numbers. I don’t think he intentionally boarded him but, he did board him. A player in Getzlaff’s position is unable to protect himself. This hit has to be taken out of the game. 2 games.
