Video: Leafs’ Bernier collides with Penguins’ Megna

Dec 16, 2013, 11:21 PM EDT

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jayson Megna got the worst of a hard collision with Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier on Monday.

Bernier came out of his crease as Megna chased down a loose puck in the Toronto zone early in the third period of the Penguins’ 3-1 victory. The two collided at the top of the faceoff circle.

Megna went hard into the boards and was slow to get up. He made it back to the bench, hobbling on the way, and did not return to the game.

As per the Penguins’ Twitter account, Megna suffered a lower-body injury and is “unlikely” to play Wednesday against the New York Rangers.

    Classy really.

  2. sjsharks66 - Dec 16, 2013 at 11:40 PM

And this is why Miller got hit by Lucic…

  3. hazlydose - Dec 17, 2013 at 2:07 AM

Nice move by Reilly to cross check an injured player as he skates to the bench. Surprised Kadri didn’t come in with the Macho Man elbow again.

    • tylerhughes20 - Dec 18, 2013 at 10:23 AM

Yeah like when Kadri was punching Sid in the face when he was up against the
Boards. He is a dirt bag just like Reilly. Sid is not dumb enough to get a retaliation

      • hazlydose - Dec 19, 2013 at 2:39 AM

Kadri was punching sid because Sid pushed his head into the glass for throwing a flying elbow. They both should have received roughing minors.

looked like a clean hockey hit…gotta keep your head up son…

what is this, girl’s hockey…can’t take hitting out of the game, people might mistake it for curling…

    figure skating…tiddly winks…

legitimized exhibition of men in garters…ooooh, my bad, don’t wanna overstimulate some of those penguins supporters…

ooooh, ooooh, ah, ah ahaha, yes, yesss, yes, yessssss…

I’m shocked pens fans aren’t whining and crying for a season long suspension for Bernier. What do you say? Oh, yes, keep your head up.

    • drone501 - Dec 17, 2013 at 7:19 AM

pens fan. nope it was a good play by the goalie, just as was the check by bortuzzo.

    • hockey412 - Dec 17, 2013 at 9:17 AM

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard – it was a hockey play, a race to the puck, that ended badly. If Bernier was on the losing end of that collission I’d hope that people would feel the same, and wouldn’t blame Megna. I know I would.

      • montrealbbr - Dec 17, 2013 at 9:57 AM

Megna has to back off when the goalie comes out like that. That was just like when Lucic ran over Miller. Dirty play and Toronto should have stuck up for their goalie.

      • hockey412 - Dec 17, 2013 at 10:57 AM

You only have to back off if you think you won’t get there first. Megna thought he got there first, and when he didn’t, tried to avoid as much of the contact as possible. He didn’t posture himself for a hit, the way Lucic did. That’s actually why he got the worst of it.

      • dboldave - Dec 17, 2013 at 10:06 AM

If that were Lucic, you’d be calling for his head!

      • hockey412 - Dec 17, 2013 at 10:53 AM

Lucic’s play was different – he wasn’t going for the puck – he was going for a complete run – watch the two plays one after another. That’s not hard to figure out.

      • hockey412 - Dec 17, 2013 at 10:58 AM

Also – Lucic postured himself for a hit…for a check. Megna postured himself to get out of the way. That’s why he was the one injured in this case, and Miller was the one injured in the case of the dbag Lucic.

    Suspend Bernier immediatly.

  7. cavafox - Dec 17, 2013 at 8:14 AM

It’s not the bernier check that was dirty but the Reilly checks on an injured player as he was heading to the bench.

  8. montrealbbr - Dec 17, 2013 at 9:55 AM

Classy move by Megna running a goalie like that. If he is hurt he deserves it and that is karma for you.

  9. 7mantel - Dec 17, 2013 at 10:05 AM

Megna was lucky it wasn’t Billy Smith or Ron Hextall they would have followed him to the boards and pummeled him ! Old time hockey

  10. sjsharks66 - Dec 17, 2013 at 10:38 AM

No, you do not have to back off when the goalie comes out that far. He left his crease, he is fair game. Megna didn’t thin he would come out that far. If anything
It should have been a trip and a penalty on the crosscheck. Toronto needs to screw their heads on straight. Most suspended team and still pulling things like that.

  11. cavafox - Dec 17, 2013 at 11:10 AM

It looks like Megna’s stick actually hits the puck first. There is NO WAY Megna is at ANY fault here. He got to the puck and very well was within a blink of an eye from scoring. That play was, unfortunate, and that it all.

Now when the douchenozzle reilly comes in and starts checking a player when he can barely get to the bench, he deserved to be knocked out.

  12. slysipops - Dec 17, 2013 at 3:20 PM

one of the hardest hits i ever had put on me was from a goalie. i had pissed him off in a playoff game a season or so before , so maybe i had it coming? anyway i kind of conned him into making a pass that i intercepted, my thoughts were only on scoring into his empty net( forgetting he was a heck of a skater) dumb me. all of a sudden BAM!!! I STILL SWEAR ONE OF MY SHOULDERS TOUCHED THE OTHER ! what can you do… tapped him and said ….good play, even though i had other wishes for his health ! lol! by the way it was a non-check league so it was really not expected….OUCH !!

  13. muckleflugga - Dec 17, 2013 at 5:05 PM

goalies are not fair game, anywhere on the ice…incidental collisions precipitated by the goalie himself notwithstanding

in this instance, a no fault play…the skater must have a margin wherein intent can be formulated

  14. bsfan77 - Dec 17, 2013 at 7:15 PM

Boo hoo Pens fans! Megna got lit up by a goalie. Reilly was mearly helping him to the bench. Lol. About time Pitt gets what is coming to them.

  15. tylerhughes20 - Dec 18, 2013 at 10:20 AM

The goalie was just playing the puck and so was Megna so stuff happens. As for getting
Cross Checked it the back while skating injured to the bench is cowardly. That is
BS that Reilly got away with that hope he gets his. Like a hit from behind that results in
him going head first into the boards.
