Bruins coach doesn’t approve of Marchand’s antics

Dec 15, 2013, 2:11 AM EDT

The Boston Bruins drew headlines on Saturday, but it wasn’t so much about losing to the Vancouver Canucks 6-2. Instead, Brad Marchand turned heads by making gestures reminding his opponents of the Bruins 2011 Stanley Cup Final win.

Apparently, that bit of trolling didn’t leave B’s head coach Claude Julien amused. He said that the 25-year-old antics will be addressed, according to PHT’s Jason Brough.

(Cue the foreboding music.)

Being a pest is a part of Marchand’s game, so it would be interesting to hear what Julien might have to say to him. Unfortunately for those hoping for added entertainment, that won’t happen, as it’s almost certainly going to happen behind closed doors.

It might be a familiar conversation. Julien gave the pest a talking-to following his golf swing taunt back in 2011, after all. Here’s a brief description of that scene back then, via CSNNE.com:

Julien read Marchand the riot act between the second and third period about his bush actions toward the Toronto bench, and the Bruins agitator admitted he’d gone a little too far this time.

Marchand didn’t score a point against Vancouver tonight and is having a disappointing season overall (14 points in 33 games played), so perhaps the message could be as simple as “taunt less, score more.”

Marchand is like the NHL version of Snooki. Little, annoying, loudmouthed Italian (looking) person that everyone hates.

hell, i wouldn’t kick snooki out of bed for eating crackers…providing she let me be the man

      You really have high standards

  3. bencia823 - Dec 15, 2013 at 2:39 AM

I don’t know what to make of the idea of Julien disciplining his players for being agitating. Claude Julien’s Bruins have continually played a style based around drawing penalties, from their rampant diving to the cheap shots/ agitating attitude that takes opponents out of their game. I find it hard to believe that he’s trying to make his team play a clean and professional game.

    • drewzducks - Dec 15, 2013 at 9:21 AM

You’re an imbecile. 26th, 23rd, last and tied for last. Those are their league rankings in power play attempts for each of the last four seasons, including this season. Thanks for the nonsense though.

      • nunan - Dec 15, 2013 at 1:52 PM

        Facts are fun!

      • bencia823 - Dec 15, 2013 at 3:45 PM

excuse me for basing my opinions off of what I see while watching the games as opposed to just looking at nhl.com. One of the benefits of having NHL Gamecenter is that I get to see every team in the league, and I’d be hard pressed to find a team that embellishes more than the Bruins. Diving isn’t the only way to draw penalties. Teams like Pittsburgh and Washington can get on the PP a lot just by forcing their opponents to take penalties to stop grade A chances.

    • theskinsman - Dec 15, 2013 at 10:23 AM

“I don’t know what to make of the idea”
Perhaps because you have the mental agility of a used bar of soap?
What’s hard to believe is that you posted such easily refutable garbage.Try watching a game someday, and have an adult explain it to you. Then you won’t be proving how little you actually know.

      • bencia823 - Dec 15, 2013 at 3:50 PM

        refutable?

    • seanobi - Dec 19, 2013 at 2:42 PM

Rampart diving? cheap shots? you must be either a Canadiens or Canucks fan? Only fan of those teams would make such a stupid statement.1st the Bruins have mostly been on the bottom of power play opportunity list the last 5 or so years 2nd don’t confuse agitating attitude with good hard hits. The Bruins don’t get pushed around and THAT et’s opponents off their game (just ask Pittsburgh).Teams are not going to take runs and cheap shots at the Bruins because the Bruins will respond in kind.

  4. jhaegs - Dec 15, 2013 at 2:50 AM

muckleflugga, I have a feeling you wouldn’t push Marchand out of bed either…

  5. itsallniceonice - Dec 15, 2013 at 2:59 AM

Are there 15 game penalties for this Jim O’Brien? The Canucks spanked the Bruins. No one cares…except your advertiser. $$$$

have a seat, relax, close your eyes, inhale deeply…exhale softly, slowly…

reach back into your past, search your soul…find where your feelings come from…

    are you there…?

perhaps you were inspired by sabatimus and her earlier reference to fellatio…gave you a chubby but for all the wrong reasons

perhaps it was earlier, an overly attentive scout master, camp counsellor…dominatrix

perhaps it was a surprise puncture on the female part of your he and she blow-up dolls…hey, he’s not so bad after-all

    go back…find…peace

    • flyerspsu - Dec 15, 2013 at 4:34 AM

lol what is wrong with you?

  7. theskinsman - Dec 15, 2013 at 4:23 AM

I’m shocked no canucks dove to the ice in withering pain after marchand gave them the business. I see at least a 10 game suspension for him from the league,.

    • drewzducks - Dec 15, 2013 at 9:24 AM

  8. jhaegs - Dec 15, 2013 at 4:35 AM

muckleflugga, perhaps it was your mom giving me an unexpected reach around that I didn’t even pay for…

  9. jhaegs - Dec 15, 2013 at 4:47 AM

Also, that is your second reference to sabatimus. You’re teetering on the edge of obsession.

  10. 19to77 - Dec 15, 2013 at 4:49 AM

When your own coach calls you out in public multiple times for being immature and stupid, you’ve got some pretty major discipline issues.

  11. bunkerhillbob - Dec 15, 2013 at 8:46 AM

Yes, he really upsets the opponents, he’s cocky and in your face; but he also has many skills and knows how to win. He’s an exciting player to watch, too.

  12. wishingtonredslur - Dec 15, 2013 at 9:35 AM

I wish they wore the bear outline jerseys more, they’re awesome, oh and he’s still more like able than Claude Lemieux.

    • bunkerhillbob - Dec 15, 2013 at 11:07 AM

Much smaller than Lemieux and more of a scorer, too, but, ya, Brad studied him.

      • thephillyfanclub - Dec 16, 2013 at 1:02 AM

Brad marchand has never eclipsed 55 points in a season, and he is more of a scorer than Claude Lemieux, do you even know who claude lemieux is?

      • kaptaanamerica - Dec 16, 2013 at 3:08 AM

Are you f#ing mental? Claude Lemieux is a hall of famer, Stanley cups with three different teams and a long career in the league. Marchand is a douche in comparison.

  13. micasa81 - Dec 15, 2013 at 9:55 AM

Good on Julien, I suppose. I don’t think it’ll help, but I also don’t care that much about him pulling stuff like this. He is who he is. I didn’t notice him diving or pulling dirty crap during the play, and that’s what I grew to really detest him for. As a Canucks fan, it’s easy to just cement my opinion about him and not pay attention to how he may have changed his play. I haven’t watched him much, so this is an extremely small sample size, but I know B’s fans say he’s changing his game.

    • joey4id - Dec 15, 2013 at 10:47 AM

Schmuck Marchand is actually a very talented player. Every shift of every game he plays hard and is fun to watch until he decides to act like a “schmuck”. He drives to the net, strong along the boards, is physical, good two way player, and has decent scoring abilities. He has enough game not to resort to amateurish antics.

      • seanobi - Dec 19, 2013 at 2:54 PM

He has knocked off most of the bull. He’s having an off year and I think he’s getting frustrated. His goal production has been increasing since his rookie year except for this year.If he was putting the puck in the net people wouldn’t be “calling him out”

    • shaundre93 - Dec 15, 2013 at 3:20 PM

Biggest difference is he’s not taking bad penalties, or completely taking himself out of games to agitate. At this point, all he has to do is play and people get agitated purely because he’s brad Marchand lol. This is probably the most taunting he’s done the last two years. He really has simmered down and focused on trying to score… Which may actually be hurting his production. That’s why I laugh when I see the comments like ” maybe he should worry more about scoring and less about taunting”. He’s tried and its not really working. He’s not a pure offensive threat, but it seems like he’s been trying to play like one lately. For these reasons I was happy to see him get into it like that. Maybe it’ll spark something

  14. nunan - Dec 15, 2013 at 11:55 AM

I love it. Marchand is relatively easy going nowadays so the occasional ‘controversy’ is fine. And really, who cares? It’s fine for the coach to care but anyone else complaining about sportsmanship, or class, blah blah, blah….get over yourself. Truth is, I want him to be more of a pot-stirrer than he has been this season. His numbers are down and all those things he does allow him to be more effective and more into the game.

  15. canada2014gold - Dec 15, 2013 at 1:53 PM

Marchand should just shut up, your getting blown out by a team that’s supposedly washed up and your having a crap season. Less talking more scoring. Looks like the canucks learned how to stick up for themselfs, while still scoring goals and playing defense. Hottest team in the nhl

  16. bruinsfan55 - Dec 15, 2013 at 2:33 PM

It’s just Marchand being an agitator lie he is, when he is on his game he does that and that’s why he’s an effective player. Mind you he is having a rough season so far but calling him classless like so people are is absurd. What’s classless is chanting “Boston Strong” and mocking a city for being bombed. Sickening

    • kaptaanamerica - Dec 16, 2013 at 3:11 AM

So English must be your distant second language considering anyone with any sense knows the fans were chanting Boston sucks’….

  17. micasa81 - Dec 15, 2013 at 2:55 PM

“What’s classless is chanting “Boston Strong” and mocking a city for being bombed.”

    Classless, yes, but also fiction.

  18. jhaegs - Dec 15, 2013 at 10:07 PM

More of a goal scorer than Lemieux?

  19. canada2014gold - Dec 15, 2013 at 11:27 PM

Expensive 3rd liner, just like Burrows. Both teams are better off without them anymore. You only get to be tippy if your backing it up with the physical side or scoring.

  20. charastein - Dec 16, 2013 at 7:28 AM

Chara thinks that Marchand is being silly little man. He should be busy working on his game, not inventing new taunts. The best taunt is a victory. Everything else is just noise.

Stop being noisy and just score goals little bear.

Perhaps he needs to be traded to Dallas to be with Seguin?

  21. kingcobraman - Dec 16, 2013 at 1:19 PM

Marchand proves once again he is a classless a$$clown….

  22. jhaegs - Dec 16, 2013 at 7:01 PM

    @thephillyfanclub

Dear God, I missed the initial mention of CLAUDE Lemieux and thought you were speaking of Mario lol
