Stars coach calls Peluso hit ‘a joke,’ phone hearing to come

Dec 14, 2013, 10:55 PM EDT

Update: Anthony Peluso will face a telephone hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety for the check in question.

Alex Goligoski returned to Saturday’s game despite a hit that earned Peluso an ejection, but that didn’t stop Dallas Stars head coach Lindy Ruff from venting on that subject following the 6-4 win.

“I thought the Peluso hit was a joke, for a guy that plays that amount of time and runs a guy like Goligoski from behind. What’s he play, three or four minutes a game? Go run one of our bigger guys,” Ruff said.

Here’s video of that check:

The Stars generated some quick revenge against the Winnipeg Jets on the ice, as they scored two power-play goals on the resulting major penalty.

Ruff praised Goligoski, 28, for coming back. Again, he’s not pleased with the hit nonetheless.

“It was gutsy of him to come back. It cut him open,” Ruff said. “Those are the hits you want to get rid of. Let’s be serious, the hit was stupid, it’s something we want to get rid of and there is really no place for it. There were some good hits. (Antoine) Roussel got hit hard a couple times, we hit a guy into the bench. It was a hard-hitting game, there was a lot of emotion in the game. But we don’t have any room for that.”

Ruff calls everything he disagrees with a “joke”.

According to Ruff, Darcy Tucker’s hit on Jochen Hecht a few years back is the “definition of a joke”.

    Good stuff.

So you are telling me that hit was OK? Keluso plays 3 minutes a game and that is just to do dirty hits like that. Classless hockey players are what is wrong with this sport. I am all for fighting and hitting but I am against 3 minute goons. How would you like it if your precious Sedins or Kesler got run over like that. Horrible boarding, interference, hit from behind. Pick one. Dirty play from a useless player. Disgusting.

No, I think the point is that Lindy is acting the hypocrite. He wasn’t calling for his own goof, Rousell, to try running some bigger Blackhawks. No, he was happy that he tried to run Kane, Toews, etc. Now that someone tries to run one of his skill players, he freaks out.

I wouldn’t say the Stars were completely innocent of clean play here. Brenden Dillion’s roughing minor in the 2nd period against Scheifele should be going up to Shanny for review. Dillon targeted Scheifele’s head with a forearm shiver, a la 1980’s AWA wrestling style.

Peluso has never been the instigator of any dirty play so far in his career. My thought was that he got a little to amped up in the situation and took a stupid run a Goligoski.

I agree with Ruff being a hypocrite.

    Peluso not Keluso.
He didn’t say the hit was ok – just that Lindy calls everything a “joke”.
You know whose a joke? Lindy Ruff. He went off on the ref for 5 minutes over what he perceived as a Jets man interfering with a Star as they dumped & chased in the zone … .. Even though he teaches his d men to do this & they do it every dump. He went off for 5 minutes on the ref screaming profanities at him when they were up 2 in the 3rd – that’s a joke
