Clarkson gets two game suspension for high hit on Sobotka

Dec 14, 2013, 12:48 PM EST

The NHL has decided to suspend Toronto’s David Clarkson for two games over his headshot to St. Louis Blues forward Vladimir Sobotka during
Thursday’s game.

Sobotka didn’t sustain an injury as a result of the incident, but Clarkson is a repeat offender after being handed an automatic 10-game suspension for leaving the bench during a 2013 preseason contest to join a fight.

This is the latest in a long line of suspensions for the Maple Leafs this season. In addition to Clarkson’s two suspensions, the NHL has also punished Dion Phaneuf (two games, boarding), arter Ashton (boarding, two games), Nazem Kadri (goalie interference, three games), and Phil Kessel (slashing, three games).

Clarkson will be eligible to return against the Florida Panthers on Dec. 17. He’ll also surrender $109,576.10 in salary, which brings his total losses to $378,806.90 for the 2013-14 campaign, according to Sportsnet’s David Alter.

He’s in the first season of a seven-year, $36.75 million contract.

Here’s the NHL’s video explanation:
