‘This one is on us': Islanders lose high-scoring game to Coyotes

After a brief recourse from a hideous 10-game losing streak, the New York Islanders once again felt the sting of defeat.

This time, they gave up half a dozen goals in a 6-3 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes, as their road trip out west came to an end. In five games away from Long Island, the Islanders were victorious just once. They’ve now dropped 11 of their past 12 games, with the only win in that time coming against the San Jose Sharks in a shootout on Tuesday.

The two teams combined for six goals in the second period, with the Coyotes scoring four. They are also without their captain and one of their top scorers Shane Doan, who is out “for the foreseeable future” due to illness.

“When it’s a 6-3 final and your goalie is still your best player, it’s a bad sign,” Islanders defenseman Thomas Hickey told Newsday Long Island.

“This one is on us. You can’t have your goalie bailing you out all the time.”

Islanders’ 23-year-old goalie Kevin Poulin saw his record fall to 4-12-0. He made 31 saves in the loss.
