The Panthers have implemented a team breakfast policy

New Florida Panthers owner Vinnie Viola sat down with the Sun-Sentinel this week for a wide-ranging Q&A about a variety of topics, including the most important meal of the day.

How do you feel new coach Peter Horachek has done so far?

It’s a process. We’re doing things now that I think are going to sow the seeds of cohesion and camaraderie to create this culture of excellence. On practice days, the team has breakfast together now. I think that’s important for guys to get to know each other outside of the confines of the ice and outside the confines of the normal to and fro of a hockey life.

It’s worth noting that, under Horachek, the Panthers haven’t been that bad. They’re 7-8-1 through 16 games — a .469 winning percentage — which is significantly better than the 3-9-4 mark the club posted in the same amount of games under Kevin Dineen (a .313 winning percentage).

What’s more, the club is playing some of the best hockey at the moment, possibly due to the collective sharing of Eggs Benedict. The Panthers have won three of their last four, including a pair of victories over the Detroit Red Wings.

Viola says the season has been hectic thus far, but expects more positive results as things progress.

“We have been learning an awful lot,” he explained. “It’s kind of like drinking out of a fire hose.

“We’re more committed now to the principles that we believe in that produce long-term excellence in organizations. The team is, I think, starting to understand that everyone must work and everyone has to be absolutely committed to excellence. We’re not going to tolerate anything but 100 percent dedication to the culture of the team first.”

What is it they are sprinkling on those cereals? :-) Seriously! Team bonding is important, but breakfast at Tiffany’s…. idk these guys spend enough time on the road together. Maybe that’s when they should bond. So now they’ll be known around the league as “The Breakfast Club”.

Bringing people together for meals really does build a bond between people. Smart move to get the team closer together.

Like I said. They have these when they’re on the road. Don’t read too much into this. These are not kids for goodness sake. A team breakfast is not the ultimate solution for a struggling team. This amateur stuff may work in a business environment.

Let the panther bashing begin…theyre showing improvement and that is good! the young guns are stepping up and making big plays. I like the team before us. just needs a little seasoning. maybe team bonding is that seasoning

Please don’t convince yourself that the Panthers have a functional roster and that their lack of “seasoning” is what makes them terrible. What they have is a roster that would probably make for a top 5 team in the AHL.

This coming from a guy who’s team is a whopping 5 whole points ahead of the Panthers…

Devils haven’t been blown out of any games this year, every single loss was tight. The Devils have a legit starting goalie, the Panthers, not so much. The Devils have the no. 3 PK in the NHL, the Panthers, 29th. Just a few things, but if you actually watch our games you’d know you can’t compare the two.

      • Scott Mullin - Dec 13, 2013 at 3:24 PM

Devils only have five more points and have scored the same amount of goals.

The panthers have a ton of young talent coming up! they need some experience. The team may be next to last but they have a good prospect pool that will lead them to a competitive team soon if they can keep the young talent

the fact he’s a devils fan doesn’t change anything about the fact the panthers suck, have sucked and most likely will continue to suck for a very long time

      GO HABS

Chara will have the pancakes please. Lots of them. And bacon. Chara eat the whole pig.

Walter “Flynn” White Jr. would approve of this.

  6. sjsharks66 - Dec 13, 2013 at 3:21 PM

And I said what about breakfast at Tiffany? She said I think I remember the film. As I recall we both kind o liked it.

  7. muckleflugga - Dec 13, 2013 at 5:05 PM

what really brings them together is twisting-off a couple of fatties, gathering in a sheltered corner of the parking lot after practice, burning said fatties, then convening at cuban pete’s for suds, wings and generally ribald exchange and hilarity

these are hockey players after all…
