Flames win just hours after Jay Feaster fired as GM

Brian Burke

Hard to know for sure if the Calgary Flames played with enough truculence Thursday night, but they did get a win.

Yes, the Flames made headlines today when Brian Burke fired former general manager Jay Feaster and assistant GM John Weisbrod. Burke now takes over as the acting GM, and, of course he brought up at his press conference earlier in the day how he wants the Flames to be a more truculent team going forward under a newly developing regime.

But Burke will probably be happy with this: tough guy Brian McGrattan, more prone to throwing fists, scored his first goal of the season. Chris Butler was also originally given credit for the overtime winner, as the Flames got past the Carolina Hurricanes by a final score of 2-1 in the extra frame.

The win caps off an eventful day, to say the least, in Calgary.

On top of Feaster and Weisbrod getting let go, the Flames quickly sent Sven Baertschi, someone Burke has been critical of this season, to Abbotsford in the American Hockey League.

However, Burke maintained that the coaching staff, led by bench boss Bob Hartley, is safe. Surely, a win helps a little bit, too.

“I’m very happy with the coaching staff,” Burke said, as per the Calgary Herald.

“I think sometimes when a change like this is made, the instantaneous reaction is, ‘Who’s next?’ There will be no further changes. Even if a new GM comes in, these coaches are going to coach this team through this year. I promised them that.

yes friend, we should qualify those oil sheiks as being ‘Albertan’ eh ? …
in all seriousness though, this is a ‘great’ day for the Flames ! … and I guarantee you that Burke will have them on the road to ‘respectability’ in less time than it takes Feaster to devour a 40 ounce Grade ‘A’ Alberta quarter house steak ! :)

Judge: would counsel for the truth like to add anything further ?

Blomfeld: no your honor, not at this time

Judge: very well then, the court finds the Feaster lovers ‘guilty’ as charged !

Feaster Lovers: wait a minute, what the hell are you talking about ?

Judge: guards, if you please ? …

    Guards: shut up you idiots ! … KAPOW !! .. KABOOM !! .. KAZAM !!

Blomfeld: permission to approach the bench ?

    Judge: of course friend …

Blomfeld: hey man, like what do you think about Burke taking over there now ?

Judge: I think the sisters have already started crapping Swedish meatballs !

Blomfeld: and what about tomorrow, with Kassian and it being Friday the 13th and all ?

Judge: it’s now all in God’s hands my friend …

    Blomfeld: indeed it is …

Cam Neely and Peter Chiarelli are probably not too upset about this firing.
