Fresh off a very much-needed win in San Jose, the New York Islanders have officially called up forward Ryan Strome from AHL Bridgeport.

It’s expected Strome, 20, will make his NHL debut Thursday in Phoenix versus the Coyotes. The AHL’s leading scorer (nine goals and 24 assists) was originally set to play last night against the Sharks, but poor weather on the East Coast and time constraints got in the way.

Newsday explains:

Pierre-Marc Bouchard cleared waivers at noon EST yesterday, and Strome could not be officially recalled until then. Players cannot travel before their official recall, so Strome would have had to catch a flight (or more likely two), fly cross country all day and then try to jump into the lineup Tuesday night.

Strome was the fifth overall pick in the 2011 draft.

Good hardworking player!! Still can’t believe they traded Moulson and 1st for Vanek. They forgot to compare heart when they made that deal

I’m tired of everyone bashing the trade… Vanek has been awesome for the Islanders. He was injured. It’s the other 3 lines that has been a concern.

eh. its not that vanek isnt or hasnt been a good player, its just whether or not they really needed him instead of a defenseman or goalie. if they were willing to put a 1st and moulson on the block, they couldve addressed a more pressing need. plus the islanders are 5-13-2 since the trade…he hasnt helped them much.

It’s less about Vanek and more about what they gave up to get him. Vanek has been as good as Moulson was, but has absolutely not made up the difference of what is shaping up to be an amazing first round pick.

If it’s a top 10 pick the Isles will still get it this year. The 1st rounder that they owe to Buffalo will be deferred to 2015.

THEY CAN DEFER THE PICK TILL THE FOLLOWING SEASON!!!!! Pay attention people!!!!!!!!!!!!

it wont matter if its 2014 or 2015, buffalo is gonna get a quality pick no matter what…we are seeing that the success in a shortened season last year was just an anomaly. snow shouldve known better too going into this year

    • islesjb - Dec 11, 2013 at 6:49 PM

Getting a little ahead of yourself. I get that it’s super disappointing that the Isles are defecating the bed this year but that doesn’t mean anyone is in a position to denounce them for next year.

It wasnt an anomaly. We just lost two valuable defenseman with the loss of streit and visnovsky. And then add strait to that and we have three AHL defenseman running around that have no NHL experience. It’s an off year. It’ll work out better next year.

    • jpelle82 - Dec 12, 2013 at 10:33 AM

strait was a castoff who couldnt make the penguins and everyone should be used to and prepared for visnovsky to be injured by now…i really hope that youre not hanging onto those two saving your season upon return.

Seriously? I love Moulson don’t get me wrong. I understand chemistry and I understand the glaring need for a goalie AND a defenseman. Vanek missed a few games and also it takes time to build chemistry. Clearly, the Isles felt Moulson’s success was due to JT. Imagine slotting a guy who has scored like Moulson WITHOUT JT. As far as acquiring defenseman how many big named defenseman were available for trade?? Yes, should of went the extra mile but honestly, has Poulin and Nilsson been that bad?? Or has the defense completely blown it for them? As far as draft picks go… Enough already, we are STACKED in our farm system. Aren’t you tired of rebuilding? Don’t you want to see stars brought here to play with our captain? If it costs us a first round and a 2nd round I’ll gladly give that up. A draft pick isn’t a guarantee at all.

“A draft pick isn’t a guarantee at all.”

and neither is Vanek re-signing with us.
