Tampa Bay’s Panik receives boarding major for hit on Caps’ Alzner

Dec 10, 2013, 9:30 PM EDT

Tuesday’s Tampa Bay Lightning – Washington Capitals game might be defined as much by its big mistakes as it will be by great feats (such as Alex Ovechkin‘s hat trick).

Braden Holtby and Mike Green may take much of the blame for Washington’s early 3-0 deficit, but Richard Panik‘s boarding major on Karl Alzner hurt the Lightning badly, too.

Here’s a GIF of the hit via SBNation (video coming soon):

Ovechkin scored two goals on the ensuing power play, helping the Capitals to temporarily tie the game up. Panik doesn’t have a suspension history in the NHL, but this is just his 52nd regular season contest.

    Ouch, at least 2 games.

I hate that Panik guy. He did that exact same thing twice in the Calder Cup Finals, and only got a minor penalty. Those are the type of hits that seriously injure people. Hope Shanahan gives him 3+ games of sitting time.

That’s a 2 game suspension. At least the officials called this one correctly. That’s a start.

Panik’s immediate reaction in the gif is great. He seems to be saying “What? Why would slam your head and neck into the boards like that? COME ON.”

2 gm suspension maybe . Alzner missed played puck, he was already off balance. Still a dirty hit

Do the NHL players need to have STOP signs on the back of their uniforms like they do in some junior leagues?

at some point we have to recognize that most of these hits are delivered by players that are just plain butt ugly stupid…

there’s no other explanation for behaviour we see in the nhl night in and night out
