Isles shakeup: Bouchard waived, Strome to debut?

The struggling New York Islanders made a significant move on Monday, putting veteran forward Pierre-Marc Bouchard on waivers in a move designed to bring Ryan Strome — the fifth overall pick at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft — up from AHL Bridgeport, according to Newsday.

Bouchard, 29, was signed as a free agent this summer to a one-year, $2 million deal. Though his offensive production hasn’t been terrible — four goals and nine points in 28 games — he’s minus-9 on the year and has seen his ice-time dwindle lately (he played a season-low 10 minutes against Pittsburgh last Tuesday.)

Newsday’s Arthur Staple reports that once Bouchard clears waivers or is picked up by another team, Strome will join the Islanders.

For many, this is an exciting development. Strome was part of a stellar top-five crop at the ’11 Draft — Ryan Nugent-Hopkins went first overall, followed by Gabriel Landeskog, Jonathan Huberdeau and Adam Larsson — and the former OHL Niagara standout has been tearing it up with AHL Bridgeport this season.

Strome, 20, leads the league in scoring with 33 points in 23 games, which includes a league-high 24 assists. He’s impressed in each of the last two Islander training camps and now appears primed to make his NHL debut, which could come on Tuesday when the Isles take on the Sharks in San Jose.

Can’t hurt, lose the dead weight and bring up a motivated rookie. Put him on a line with JT and Vanek or even one of them, good chance that positive things will happen.

With the Islanders playing awful, it’s not at all improbable that Buffalo could end up with two top-3 picks in the upcoming draft. Plus whatever they got for flipping Moulson and Miller at the deadline isn’t the worst way to rebuild a hockey club. Now if they could just do something about those third jerseys.

Actually, that’s not happening this year. The first rounder the Isles traded to Buffalo was top-10 protected, so if the Isles were to finish among the ten worst teams in the NHL, Garth Snow would just switch the first rounder that Buffalo is awarded until next year.

If you’re Buffalo, you either root that the Isles finish 11th overall or have the worst team in hockey next year.

To put it in context, there are only 3 players who have a positive plus/minus on the Islanders. -9 isn’t even the worst forward. The Wanger doesn’t want to pay his salary given the Isles’ record.

not even close. Bouchard was always a stop gap. Thats why hes playing on a one year deal. They didnt want to rush strome but now given their record and stromes production at the ahl level it just makes sense to give him a shot. Its also more likely snow got tired of capuano scratching nelson every other night for a guy like bouchard considering bouchard has been one of our worst forwards. This forces capuanos hand to play the guys who are meant to be part of the future of this team and gives a guy with young talent at chance to prove himself at the next level. Nothing to do with wang being cheap. The owner who looses more money out of his own pocket then any other owner in the NHL each year. I wouldnt blame him if it was a money move but its just not accurate. Bouchard has been for the most part terrible and hasnt filled the top 6 role they hoped he would. No need to block prospects and keep him on the roster

We also need to bring up one of our tall aggressive defenseman to play in front if the crease and kill opposing teams forward for even thinking about standing there.
