Trade: Rangers acquire Beach from ‘Hawks

Kyle Beach

While the flipping of AHL forwards normally doesn’t raise eyebrows, this one does… a bit.

On Friday, the New York Rangers acquired Chicago farmhand Kyle Beach, the 11th overall pick at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. In exchange, the Blueshirts sent Brandon Mashinter to the ‘Hawks.

Beach, 23, has spent his entire pro career with the Blackhawks’ AHL affiliate in Rockford. Last year, he scored 16 goals, with 10 assists, in 66 games while amassing 204 penalty minutes.

He signed a one-year, two-way extension with the ‘Hawks this summer but was placed on waivers in September, then spent a month playing for HV71 of the Swedish Hockey League before returning to Rockford.

A star in junior, Beach scored 52 goals for the Spokane Chiefs in 2009-10; however, questions about his attitude have followed him from his days in the WHL (see: this article from 2007 for background).

He was taken between Buffalo’s Cody Hodgson (10th overall) and Tyler Myers (12th) at the ’08 Draft.

Never heard much about attitude issues for Beach in Rockford. Did hear Beach and Bill Peters had it out at one point in time. Another Tallon pick bites the dust. Out with the older prospects, in with the new. Beach did have a hat trick recently, so maybe he still has upside. He never seemed like a smart player, had all the tools needed to become an NHL power forward, but never utilized the tools he had. Spent way too much time “floating”. Best of luck Kyle!

Another high-scoring WHL forward…how did he bust??

So what you’re saying is that this Beach kid has “potential”. Sather loves guys with “potential”. We can put him on a line with Pouliot and Boyle and watch them all not realize their potential 10-15 minutes a night. At least we only gave up Mashinter for these magic beans.

Seriously Hawks, how many ‘Brandon’s’ does one team need?!

    • xdj511 - Dec 6, 2013 at 2:54 PM

Well the Rangers used to have a bunch of Brandons… Dubinsky… Prust… I think Mashinter was the last. We are now collecting Derek’s… Brassard… Dorsett… Stepan… do you have any of those or should we go fish?

Correct me if I’m wrong but if this guy has spent his entire career in the AHL then how and why is there a picture of him in the Hawks sweater spring the ‘A”??

      think it’s from a rookie/prospects game.

        thank you for clarification

Man, losing two games in a row and and Stan feels like he had to shake the team up.

WELL, STANLEY surely isn’t mistake free….. er, except for maybe in his eyes

Hey Charles Logan, Do you like 24?

  8. 7mantel - Dec 6, 2013 at 7:28 PM

Beach comes with a truck load of question marks !

  9. stakex - Dec 6, 2013 at 8:30 PM

Well its good to know Sather isn’t dead and is still capable of making a trade…. now lets see him make a trade that will actually help the offense.

…and what is it with the Rangers and gathering up failed first round picks? I thought after Pouliot they would stop that.

    • nicknyhc - Dec 7, 2013 at 2:54 AM

The Rangers need another tough guy. They can’t get by with just Dorsett doing all the fighting.

If Sather is gonna make another trade it needs to be Del Zotto for a physical power forward type who can score goals.

The Rangers have two emerging offensive d-men, and neither is named Del Zotto. Moore and McDonuagh have it held down.
