Islanders’ Tavares: ‘We’re not earning it’

At one point is it rock bottom for the New York Islanders, a team that qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs last spring and appeared on the upswing.

The Islanders were beaten 5-1 by the St. Louis Blues on Thursday, running their recent funk to eight games without a win, their last coming on Nov. 16.

The Blues scored three times on the power play, breaking the game wide open with a trio of goals in the second period.

Thursday’s result drops the Islanders’ record to 8-16-5. Their 21 points puts them dead last in the Metropolitan Division, and right now they’re only seven points up on the Buffalo Sabres, the last-place team in the Eastern Conference and the entire National Hockey League.

“We need to have a lot more pride,” Islanders captain John Tavares told Newsday Long Island after Thursday’s defeat.

“You’re playing in the NHL … We proved a lot last year, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to just keep climbing. We’re not earning it.”

    SERIOUSLY TUCKER …

What’s the deal with all these stories lately about teams beating themselves up about not meeting expectations ? It’s a game man with only ‘two’ sides and so someone has to win and someone has to lose. Unless of course you’re the LA Kings, where losing is a ‘foreign’ concept for us ! :)

    GO KINGS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

next up friends are Wang & crew at Staples on Saturday and ‘man’ are these guys gonna get it !

dude what does a clip from a crappy old movie have to do with the Islanders sucking or even with the Kings for that matter? You’re a strange bird man.

      • lou013 - Dec 6, 2013 at 11:00 AM

Dude you dont get it? Perfect sense & im an islander fan..you march into the battlefield, all for one & one for all. Hustle, respect, dedication, loyalty & perseverance, along with damn discipline. Which our team doesnt play the way we should. We let too many times opposing players out of the neutral zone by our forwards alone, causing the breakaways. leaving our D, to hang out high & dry, then our D, cant keep these players from shooting, crashing the net leaving our goalies left to do what our 5men couldnt do. But to save our asses. We cant rely on our goalies to hold our hands. We in as a team, guess what? We friggin’ lose as a team !! We need to get our crap together ! Like since before an 8game losing friggin streak !! Damn it. We need to start what is expected of us, to win, go on a friggin w i n n i n g streak !!

    • blomfeld - Dec 6, 2013 at 2:40 AM

hey man, just what the hell are you talking about ?

The Canadian Press @ November 14/2013

Not only did the Los Angeles Kings’ stun the New York Islanders with three third-period goals in a comeback win, they did it with a bunch of fill-ins. Undeterred by a two-goal deficit in the final frame, the Kings stormed back to beat the Islanders 3-2 on Thursday night in most unpredictable fashion. Tyler Toffoli, playing in just his fifth NHL game this season, tipped Jake Muzzin’s drive past surprised goalie Kevin Poulin with 1:27 left.

Now go take that and stuff it in your pipe ! :)

GO KINGS GO !!! … TODAY, TOMORROW AND FOREVER !!!!!!!!!!!!

tavares shouldve said “I need to have a lot more pride”. he’s listless out there unless things are going his way, any time he runs into stiff competition he withers.

    • lou013 - Dec 6, 2013 at 11:07 AM

Do you hear what youre writing, hes the best man on the team, the only one whos got pride…we dont play together as a team. Cause we lack the hustle & dedication it takes to play, also helps when you play with great discipline. Have we played the best we can? I think not !! We lost 8games straight, might as well make it 10…wake up we need to wake up & play as a team & start friggin winning

i agree there’s no hustle or dedication and that comes from your captain. the best guy on the team should deliver when it counts…tavares doesnt. 0 pts and -2 last night. he has 2/3 of his points in losses. he has 2 game winning goals all year, both in october and one was in a 6-1 rout of phoenix. he’s basically been absent all year in road games (-5 and only 11 of 32 pts). big picture he’s a career -44 and .87 ppg player and in my opinion he’s slow, lazy, emotionless, and unmotivated. just look at the playoffs last year, he had 1 pt on the road all series and in game 5 he sat on the bench with his head down almost crying while the series slipped away in a 4-0 loss. you see other captains just in his division like ovechkin, crosby, staal, callahan, and giroux giving it all they got game in and game out, flying around and making an impact just about every game. you’re lucky to see him even jump in on the forecheck or back check in the neutral zone. while he may be the best on the islanders (that doesnt really say much) he’s not even in the same zip code as the league’s best which is where he’s supposed to be according to some and where some people expect him to be. and yes, i will admit i have it out for him. i try to make an objective argument by showing numbers but most of my opinion is based on his sullen demeanor and the general lack of competitiveness i see from him. streit was a good captain and the team responded when he was there, they seem like they are lacking leadership now.

      Indeed comrade Lou …

All for one and one for all, through thick or thin, for better or for worse ! So it must ‘always’ be in a marriage, a business effort, a fighting unit or even a sports team. Of course friend there are many clips which capture this spirit of ‘elan’ from film over the years. However this particular one (Panzerlied or ‘tank song’) from the 1967 movie Battle of the Bulge has always been one of my favorites.

So ‘close rank’ Islander friends, stay true and your fortunes will turn for the better before you know it ! … though just hang on to that thought until ‘after’ tomorrow night’s game eh ? :)

Is the battle of the long-winded posters? Blomfeld, I know medical weed is a big thing in California, but you can’t abuse it, man.

I think they need Laviolette to light a fire under their butts.

Funny how a certain blowhard on this site likes to attack DC’s Russian captain for his selfishness and 1 dimensional play, yet this Islander team, forever underachieving with it’s supremely hyped young captain had fared much worse during his captaincy. Your xenophobic rantings are as transparent as your credibility is waning.

Which blowhard are we talking about here?
