PHT’s Morning Skate takes a look around the world of hockey to see what’s happening and what we’ll be talking about around the NHL world and beyond.

Sidney Crosby will play in his 500th game tonight, but he can’t help but think about how much quicker it would have come if hadn’t been slowed by injuries. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Editor’s Note: Pro Hockey Talk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a $4,000 Fantasy Hockey league for Thursday’s NHL games. It’s $25 to join and first prize is $1,000. Starts Thursday at 7:00 p.m. ET. Here’s the FanDuel link.

With Sergei Bobrovsky projected to miss the next four-to-five weeks, Columbus Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen is throwing his support behind Curtis McElhinney. (Bluejackets.nhl.com)

Calgary Flames top prospect Johnny Gaudreau is encouraged by the fact that the team is showing a willingness to trust younger players right now. It makes him more comfortable about his chances of playing a significant role once he’s through dominating in the NCAA. (Calgary Herald)

With the New York Islanders fading fast, it’s time to look at who GM Garth Snow could get to shake things up. Of course, the Islanders already acquired forward Thomas Vanek and that hasn’t led to the desired result. (Newsday)

Speaking of teams that are slumping, the Florida Panthers aren’t ready to throw in the towel in December. (Miami Herald)

Colorado Avalanche coach Patrick Roy isn’t a fan of advanced statistics like Corsi or Fenwick. (Denver Post)

Former NHL goaltender Martin Biron thinks Henrik Lundqvist‘s game will improve now that the weight of his ongoing contract negotiations has been lifted from his shoulders. Meanwhile, Roberto Luongo, er, Strombone offers a word of warning. (Biron/Luongo)

Highlights from Philadelphia’s 6-3 win over Detroit:

In the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article (more a Q&A), Crosby says, “It’s not skills or talent or any of that stuff. It’s the passion.”

Talk about a trifecta. He excels at all three. It’s a real pleasure to watch him play.

Good luck and good health to him.

I hope they have a small thing before the game, maybe Mario drops the ceremonial puck before hand and him and TK can take that draw since he was Sids teammate for so long and it’s his return tonight. That be cool.

its really not that special to warrant something like that. i like crosby but its just another regular season game, he would probably be embarrassed if they made a show of it

FYI – In real “Rivalry Night” the Bruins visit Montreal for the first game between the teams this season. Both teams coming in playing well and on hot streaks. Just saying’…..

i’m probably going to record the pens game and watch the bruins game live…hoping for fireworks…1 pt separated in the standings, canadians 8-1-1 in their last 10 (3 game win streak), bruins 7-2-1. both teams fairly healthy, two really good goalies, maybe a prust vs thornton bout…subban and chara. should be great.

Not sure if this is what you meant, but Subban had his hands full with Marchand a couple years back…I don’t think he wants to be taking on Chara.

Actually in re-reading I don’t think that is what you meant…ignore me.

      • jpelle82 - Dec 5, 2013 at 11:42 AM

ya i didnt mean for them to fight, just that its 2 of the best on the blueline in the same game

    • c9castine - Dec 5, 2013 at 3:15 PM

wait is that game on NHL network? probably record the pens game so i can skip commercials n’at and watch it at my pace and watch the boston game in that case.

      • jpelle82 - Dec 5, 2013 at 4:57 PM

thats what i try to do with every pens game, i almost never am able to sit down by 7 or 730 (4 kids and a wife at home) …but…. i’m not sure who’s showing it, hopefully one of them is in hd on center ice…been getting screwed with the pens coverage lately being in s*** d
