Crosby, Penguins beat ‘best team in the league’ Sharks

The San Jose Sharks didn’t live up to the billing levied upon them by Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma.

The Sharks gave up four goals in the second period and lost to the Penguins by a final score of 5-1 on Thursday, not long after Bylsma heaped praise on them for being the “best team in the league right now.”

Sidney Crosby, who many would state is the best player in the world, had three assists to lead the Penguins’ offensive attack. He now has a league-leading 41 points on the season.

The Penguins erupted for four goals in the second period, chasing Antti Niemi from the San Jose net. Interesting, because the Sharks had 24 shots in the middle frame, but scored only once.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 44 saves for his 16th win of the season.

Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis, who opened the scoring, played only two shifts in the second period, and didn’t see the ice after that. So far, there has been no explanation as to why he left the game.

Cant win them all. On to Carolina!

    • joey4id - Dec 6, 2013 at 8:00 AM

That’s right. There is now way that the Pens would have their way against the Sharks in a best of 7 series. It’s certainly a SCF that would be very exciting. Was this game a precursor to this year’s final?

      • killerpgh - Dec 6, 2013 at 8:30 AM

That’s the crazy thing about hockey. I wouldn’t expect it, but I wouldn’t say no way it couldnt happen either. I would be willing to bet 99.9% of hockey fans (not including some people that just hate and talk shi7) didn’t expect to see the Penguins get dominated by the Bruins last year in the ECF. Then they did….

      • joey4id - Dec 6, 2013 at 9:53 AM

Hmm! What I’m trying to say here is I don’t think the Pens would when 4 – 0 in a best of 7 series. I could see these 2 teams get to a game 7 if they were to meet in the SCF. Didn’t mean to upset you Pitt fans.

      • cofran2004 - Dec 6, 2013 at 11:25 AM

See that one thumb up? That’s from me because you were being realistic in your assessment. It is highly unlikely that anyone is just going to run through the sharks. One of the thumbs down on your other post is me for apologizing and clarifying to the idiot pens fans who thumbs downed your original post. Don’t wimp out with these toolbags, and don’t cater to their whims! You’re a MAN!

Unless, of course, you are indeed a female. In which case… You’re a WOMAN!

What was I just talking about?

      • joey4id - Dec 6, 2013 at 12:10 PM

;-) Got it! Real men never apologize.

  2. pens87 - Dec 5, 2013 at 9:53 PM

One of the more complete games I’ve seen them put together this year. Glad the pens have depth but here hoping none of the injuries are too serious and they can be back at full strength soon, but quality win tonight.

    • joey4id - Dec 6, 2013 at 8:08 AM

If your the Pens it’s one of those games when you take the 2 pts and run. You can never be happy about your team’s performance after giving up 45 shots, while on the other hand you like the fact that they scored 5 on 30 shots. If your the Sharks it’s completely the opposite. Giving up 5 goals on 30 shots is not on par for your team, nor is scoring only one goal on 45 shots. I don’t think what we saw last night was two teams at their best.

      • jpelle82 - Dec 6, 2013 at 9:42 AM

i’m not worried about 45 shots, it was pretty clear the sharks gameplan was just shoot from anywhere and crash the net. it kinda goes along with what i said yesterday going into the game…unfamiliarity leads to lack of gameplanning. if you see a team once in almost 3 years its hard to be ready for it, you gotta go in and play a simple game and hope you get your chances. the pens skill and their transition game was the difference, i think fleury made a lot of good saves but the sharks were just warming him up for the most part by just throwing eveything and anything on net…he seemed to gain confidence the more easy saves he got to make and as the game wore on. the defense did a good job of clearing rebounds and getting the puck back up the ice too.

  3. steelers88 - Dec 5, 2013 at 9:53 PM

This was the statement game the Penguins needed. They had to prove that they could beat a good team and they proved that. They dominated this game without Malkin which is pretty scary. The Penguins are about to really take off.

  4. steelers88 - Dec 5, 2013 at 9:55 PM

    Pens87.
It’s scary to think what the Penguins can do when the Pens do get healthy.

  5. erbaker67 - Dec 5, 2013 at 10:04 PM

As a Pens fan I am happy they won. I don’t think that the eons dominated the game. Fleury was absolutely fantastic but they can’t rely on Fleury to make 40+ saves every night. Letang needs to be more careful with the puck. It’s turn over turn over turn over. Also the penguins had issues getting out of their own end and without Fleury this was a completely different game.

A win is a win but the Pens need to play more disciplined.

    • joey4id - Dec 6, 2013 at 8:11 AM

Amen. Like I wrote above. If you’re the Pen you take the 2 pts and run. You know you need to play better. Last night’s game is in no way indicative of what a best of 7 series would be like if these teams were to meet in the SCF.

  6. polegojim - Dec 5, 2013 at 10:04 PM

Perfect timing… way to go ‘self proclaimed best team’.

Last time I checked… the best team is left standing with a Stanley Cup in June.

Until you do that… shut up and just play hockey.

    • sjsblitz - Dec 5, 2013 at 10:50 PM

Self proclaimed means that you proclaim yourself. Neither team declared they were the best team in the league. Go take a lap please. Good game played by Pens btw, cant knock hard work. If anything its good SJ got knocked on its butt, every team needs that every once in awhile

    • hockey412 - Dec 6, 2013 at 8:40 AM

hahaha and how much did YOU have to drink last night?? None of this makes sense. DO OVER!

  7. pdmjr - Dec 5, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Pittsburgh plays with heart, missing all the man games with injuries hasn’t slowed them down. The only downside is Fleury giving up a goal. Shame on him, Now the Pens might be the games best team.

  8. sjsharks66 - Dec 5, 2013 at 10:22 PM

Jim you are an idiot. Bylsma said the Sharks were the best team, not the Sharks themselves.

  9. dznet56 - Dec 5, 2013 at 10:34 PM

Not really a Pens fan but watching from outside they seem to play better when either Malkin or Crosby is hurt.

    • hockey412 - Dec 6, 2013 at 8:41 AM

There’s a lot of truth to that, not sure what the thumbs down are about.

      • steelpenbucs87 - Dec 6, 2013 at 9:26 AM

I think this is a little bit of revisionist history. I think, generally speaking, Malkin and Crosby will play better when the other is out of the line up – as we’ve seen a few times over the past few years. But in general, the TEAM is better when both are in the line up – no question.

      • hockey412 - Dec 6, 2013 at 9:38 AM

I think what he means is that the team rallies when they are out. And no doubt that is true. Look at the year BOTH Malkin AND Crosby were out and they played until they had nothing.

You are correct – they are a MUCH better team with them in. But the individual players seem to play harder to compensate when they are out.

    Great win by us!

    • skr213 - Dec 5, 2013 at 11:46 PM

hey congrats. what number were you wearing on the ice this evening? how many minutes of ice time did you get?

      • steelpenbucs87 - Dec 6, 2013 at 9:29 AM

I never understood the vitriol that is launched at people who say “us” or “we” when referring to a team they are a fan of. Part of what’s so much fun about being a sports fan is feeling like you are a part of something bigger than yourself – in some ways a part of the team. I’m sure pitpenguins wasn’t actually suggesting that he had something to do with the win (semantics aside), but rather just the fact that the Penguins and the fans had an exciting win last night.

SKR you seem a little jaded and embittered but.

  11. gsprulz - Dec 5, 2013 at 10:53 PM

good win pens. Hopefully we get a rematch at the tank to redeem ourselves after this poor performance.

    • handsofsweed - Dec 6, 2013 at 8:53 AM

Hopefully??? Wait, the world isn’t supposed to end before March 6th, 2014 is it?

  12. sjtorpitt - Dec 5, 2013 at 11:23 PM

So of course Jim doesn’t respond when he realizes he’s a fu**ing idiot. I honestly hate homers like you.
Great job Pens, always fun to watch.

    • wettwork - Dec 7, 2013 at 9:04 AM

Omg 🙏but what if it does !!!

  13. blomfeld - Dec 5, 2013 at 11:25 PM

    BRAVO SIDNEY !!!

As a fan of the ‘real’ best team in the game today, I nonetheless tip my hat to Crosby and friends for taking care of our Pacific Division rivals … good show, jolly good show ! :)

Crosby is the best player in the game today and he’s a terrific ambassador for all that’s good about it …

  14. jagr200 - Dec 5, 2013 at 11:50 PM

The Penguins didn’t just beat them they destroyed them. The Penguins showed who truly is the better team and just manhandled the Sharks. Made them look like a PeeWee team. The Pens also have 6 starters on IR as well.

    • blomfeld - Dec 6, 2013 at 12:39 AM

      Ain’t it a blast !

Hey man, we Kings ‘executed’ the Canucks by this same score at Staples not too long ago … you gotta love it eh ? :)

    • gsprulz - Dec 6, 2013 at 2:56 AM

hold your horses haha, don’t make me put down the SJ-PIT Wins and loss record from the past decade now. ;)

    • laxman1944 - Dec 6, 2013 at 9:41 AM

Outstanding work……..now lets get that parade route locked in.

Tell the rest of the NHL that there is no reason to finish the season…

  15. kastout11 - Dec 6, 2013 at 10:41 AM

Crosby is the best in the world and the Pens had an impressive win last night. I still like Boston in the Eastern Conference because Fluery cannot get it done in the playoffs. He can shine all he wants in the regular season, but until he gets it done in the playoffs, they will not win a cup. I also don’t want to hear that he won the cup 5 years ago. He is not the goalie he was 5 years ago.
