Report: NHL set to finally pay Gretzky at least $7M

The NHL will finally make Wayne Gretzky “whole.”

The hockey legend has been waiting years to be paid for his final season with the Phoenix Coyotes (somewhere between $7 million and $8 million), but that payment has been held up in legal matters between the league and former ‘Yotes owner Jerry Moyes. ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun and other sources report that the situation will be settled.

This is good news for more than just No. 99′s bank account.

There have been rumblings that the money owed has left the NHL and “The Great One” estranged. Maybe it will take some time to fully repair that relationship – though that has probably already started happening – but leagues are generally wise to treat their all-time greats kindly.

In other words, it’s a big relief, though Gretzky probably isn’t shedding tears about it.

The $7 million the NHL is paying 99 will be peanuts compared to the concussion lawsuit they are up against.

      Seriously? Stop it!

It’s peanuts compared to what he earned for the NHL.

stop what? it’s the truth. the NHL is screwed on this lawsuit they are up against.

Look, the NFL, which I remind you, is a little more successful money wise compared to the NHL, just settled their concussion law suit for mere 765 million. Your going to tell the NHL will be able to not only afford that, but I’m no math major, but 765 million > 7 million.

      nothing false about that

What has Gretzky ever done outside of playing ? If I’m Phoenix, I’m wanting a refund from him.

Well, he is a big part of the reason the team still resides in Arizona. He was the “face” of Jerry Moyes’ original ownership bid. Without a doubt, he brought legitimacy to that group and prevented the team from moving at that time. Also, he never publicly contested the money owed to him by the NHL (which would have added yet another unsavory underlining to this latest ownership controversy).

I know he was a terrible coach, but don’t disrespect him by forgetting what he did to keep the team in Arizona.

Getting paid for trying to ruin a franchise. Some people just get everything.

I concur friend … if anything, Gretzky should be sued for 7 million dollars by the city of Phoenix … the damage which he caused to that young ‘fledgling’ effort in the desert was both callous and despicable …

  6. pavelfitzgerald - Dec 3, 2013 at 9:28 PM

How did he try to ruin this franchise?
Whether he’s rich or not does not matter – that money is his that he earns. I hope there is a boat load of interest on that. This has been going on for years
