Lehtonen shines, Roussel agitates as Stars beat ‘Hawks

Dec 3, 2013, 10:58 PM EDT

With six straight wins against Dallas, the Chicago Blackhawks probably didn’t view the Stars as potential divisional rivals. Maybe things will remain mostly one-sided, but the animosity might ratchet up after Tuesday.

The Stars stole one 4-3 tonight thanks to Kari Lehtonen‘s brilliance (47 out of 50 saves) and Antoine Roussel‘s pesky-yet-resounding work.

Roussel was already a marked man on Tuesday after delivering some hits that Chicago didn’t like last week. Now he won’t have many dull moments against Chicago go forward after the way he celebrated this penalty shot goal, which ended up being the game-winner:

The Stars already had one gritty player making waves in Ryan Garbutt; now they have two who won’t be getting Christmas cards from opponents. As the video below shows, Chicago mostly handled Roussel,  24, the right way, actually:

Roussel gets the last laugh, obviously. Well, at least for a week … the Stars host the Blackhawks in Dallas on Dec. 10. The Stars pest might want to buckle his chin strap a little tighter for that game.

First game back from a long road trip. Players sleeping in their own beds. And the Blackhawks decided to play down to the level of the Stars for too much of the game. Turns out the Stars ramped their game up, and while the Blackhawks did make it exciting for a while it just wasn’t enough.

    • einjzmolf - Dec 3, 2013 at 11:44 PM

Get your head out of your pompous ass, dude. Calls went your way all game and you had plenty of opportunities. 50 of them, in fact. Chicago outshot Dallas 2.5-1, and you still lost. You didn’t even look at a stat sheet if that’s your excuse for your team losing tonight.

    • gbfb88 - Dec 4, 2013 at 9:03 AM

Typical Chicago fan. Your team never gets outplayed. There’s always some extenuating circumstances, or the ‘hawks were having an off night, or, in this instance, playing down to the level of an inferior team. Or, maybe, just maybe, your beloved Blackhawks got overpowered by a team who decided the best way to handle a bully was to punch them right in the throat.

      • comeonnowguys - Dec 4, 2013 at 9:23 AM

Puck possession team = “bully?” Makes sense.

      • hawksin5 - Dec 4, 2013 at 12:50 PM

Ok really? No. Sorry, man. But whatever way you look at it the Blackhawks are a better team. Stars played well. Should have been a blowout. The ONLY reason for the stars win was lehtonen. He stole you 2 points.

      • darksidecowboy - Dec 4, 2013 at 6:58 PM

Don’t forget Bruin fans said the same thing when the Stars beat them, a pattern here?

  2. sjsharks66 - Dec 3, 2013 at 11:11 PM

Real classy move by Shaw on Roussel in the fight. It’s broken up but Shaw goes back to punch Roussel in the back of the head a few times. What a punk.

    • hammerhead5573 - Dec 4, 2013 at 7:00 AM

Really, someone who has Torres on the team and has defended him is calling Shaw a punk? Hysterical. I guess you missed it when Roussel continued to punchng too, at no point did he stop. And by the way, what are you thoughts of when Roussel had his tail between his legs the rest of the night after his penatly shot exploits? I do not hold it against him for rubbing it in, but running and hiding from Bolig like a punk is even funnier. And as far as your other comment further down the board. That shows what kind of class you have when you feel it’s necessay to say We all just hate you hate you, when referring to someone you think is a Hawks fan. Good luck again in playoffs. It’ll be fun seeing you blame it on everything but the team again this year when they exit.

That was a game Dallas deserved to win. They took it to the Hawks in the first and yes that is the period the Hawks truly lost the game in. Every team has bad nights as well as good nights and The Dallas capatilized when the Hawks didn’t.

    • comeonnowguys - Dec 4, 2013 at 9:34 AM

Shaw barely had his gloves off when Roussel started swinging away at a guy he’s got 30 pounds on. Didn’t help him in the end. But that’s fine, Shaw’s the villain. Whatever.

    • hawksin5 - Dec 4, 2013 at 12:52 PM

Ok don’t be silly, Sharks, Shaws jersey was over his head and he couldn’t see.

  3. muckleflugga - Dec 3, 2013 at 11:15 PM

four goals on eighteen shots…looks like the twenty two square feet of leather and plastic masquerading as a hawk’s goalie took the night off

and roussel, giving hawk’s supporters a dose of patrick kane’s childish antics, too rich…who would have thought hawk’s fans could be more obnoxious and blatantly boorish than canuck’s, but there you have it…

    knock knock

    who’s there

    reality bites…

you better run, you better do what you can
don’t wanna see no blood, don’t be a macho man
you wanna be tough, better do what you can
so eat It, but you wanna be bad

just eat It, eat It, eat It, eat It…

    • comeonnowguys - Dec 4, 2013 at 9:21 AM

Aw, it’s cute when they learn to type.

    • hawksin5 - Dec 4, 2013 at 12:54 PM

Muckle, You do realize that you’re the joke of this site, right?

  4. blackhawks2010 - Dec 3, 2013 at 11:43 PM

The article should read, Hawks dominate in shots, zone play and fight, yet not on scoreboard. Sad loss, this game was not even close. 56 SOG to 16. This game is a blowout 9 out of 10 times, tonite was the exception. Give props to Lehtinen, he was outstanding.

    • darksidecowboy - Dec 4, 2013 at 7:05 PM

dominate which fight? the rousell/shaw fight? looked even to me

      • comeonnowguys - Dec 4, 2013 at 8:29 PM

You should have your TV checked, then.

  6. sprtsfan1 - Dec 3, 2013 at 11:48 PM

Ha! I love reading jealousy. Everyone wants their team to be as good as the Blackhawks have been and are currently. Say what you want, the Stars were badly outplayed, outshot 50-18. I’ll admit that the Hawks were out-goaltended tonight. On another note, proud of my Hawks tonight.

    • mattryannolan - Dec 4, 2013 at 10:22 AM

Not going to win a lot of games getting out-goalteneded.

      • Blackhawks5xchamps - Dec 4, 2013 at 12:53 PM

What’s the Hawks record? Hmm it seems that doesn’t happen too often. Are ANY goalies perfect? Umm No!

  7. sjsharks66 - Dec 4, 2013 at 12:17 AM

I would be pretty embarrassed if the Sharks out shot a team 50-18 and had multiple power plays and could still not grab a win. That’s Hawks fans though, everyone is jealous. When in reality, we all just hate you.

    • micasa81 - Dec 4, 2013 at 1:32 AM

While I have no love for Hawks fans, I can’t fault them for being proud of the team’s effort when they dominated the run of play. Put it this way, when you win a game in which you’ve been outshot 2.5 -1, you don’t trash talk the other team, you buy your goalie a 5 course dinner and vow that you’ll make life easier for him next game.

      • sprtsfan1 - Dec 4, 2013 at 9:31 AM

        Agreed sir, well spoken

    • sprtsfan1 - Dec 4, 2013 at 9:29 AM

Yeah, you hate us because we’ve dominated the NHL and the Sharks in particular for the past 4 years now. The Hawks aren’t a team of cheap shots, or divers. The Hawks just win, with skill and opportunism. So just keep on hating as the Hawks keep on winning.

      • comeonnowguys - Dec 4, 2013 at 9:36 AM

“Dominated the NHL for the last four years?” The Sharks, sure, but let’s pump the brakes, shall we?

    • comeonnowguys - Dec 4, 2013 at 9:38 AM

I’m not embarrassed at all. It’s called a hell of a goalie having a hell of a night. Tip the cap, move on.

  8. muckleflugga - Dec 4, 2013 at 2:38 AM

    point taken

i disagree however: the best time to rag their asses is when one’s opponent has had the run of play, and for once, did not get all the bounces, but did meet a decent goalie, for once –los angeles, vancouver then calgary come to mind immediately

in calgary, hawks had three goals with a collective speed of sixty two miles an hour…i’ve coached peewee goalies that would have made those saves, in their sleep

yet, you’d have thought hawks had just ended world war three, cured cancer and aids, or talked marian hossa into playing games back-to-back, rather than taking the night off to phone home…

so, why can the likes of hossa, kane, sharp and toews do the jitterbug and neutron dance when they score, but opposing players cannot…?

that my friend, was roussel’s point

    • comeonnowguys - Dec 4, 2013 at 9:39 AM

Show me Jonathan Toews doing the jitterbug.

  9. gbfb88 - Dec 4, 2013 at 8:58 AM

The Stars have played tougher than the Blackhawks for two straight games. They were unable to hold on in the 11-round shootout the other night, but they were the more physical, harder-hitting, bruising team. Same was true of last night. The Stars were playing with an intensity that Chicago just couldn’t muster. This has the potential to be one of the better rivalries over the course of the next half-decade or so, if the Stars can continue to trend upward. They have a lot of the right pieces.

    • Blackhawks5xchamps - Dec 4, 2013 at 12:56 PM

They have a long way to go to be even CLOSE to the Hawks skill or talent. Don’t put all of your money on one win buddy.

      • hawksin5 - Dec 4, 2013 at 1:06 PM

a VERY VERY long way to go. i mean 50-18 in shots?!?!? no defense should be giving that up, and the stars even had 17 who blocks. lehtonen is the SOLE reason for that win last night. hawks will see rousell and the stars in about a weeks time, and i think they come angry.

      • kingcobraman - Dec 4, 2013 at 1:37 PM

and you got all that skill from living in basement for all those years, show some class like your captain ….

      • Blackhawks5xchamps - Dec 4, 2013 at 2:43 PM

        Umm what?

      • hawksin5 - Dec 4, 2013 at 3:12 PM

        @kingcobra what does that mean?

  10. hammerhead5573 - Dec 4, 2013 at 9:35 AM

@gbfb88 typical Hawk envy. Nowhere to be seen when the Hawks win but as soon as they Lose, are singing like song birds.

    • comeonnowguys - Dec 4, 2013 at 9:41 AM

      Speaking of, where is jheags?

  11. hammerhead5573 - Dec 4, 2013 at 10:00 AM

Not only that comeonnow but if you noticed they switched Rousell to match up with Shaw only seconds before the fight. And as you stated, Shaw held his own. Why is it Bolig went after him and his tail was between his legs. The answer is obvious.

    • harrbenj - Dec 4, 2013 at 10:49 AM

Because there was no reason for him to fight late in a game in which they were winning by one? Just because somebody challenges you doesn’t mean you have to fight, and just because you don’t doesn’t mean you are scared. There was nothing for him or the Stars to gain by fighting. All it would have done is fire up the blackhawks more

      • hawksin5 - Dec 4, 2013 at 1:09 PM

@harrben….do you think what roussell was doing was pumping his team up?? no, he’s a very physical player, but didn’t fight to pump up his team. when he fought shaw the stars were up 1-0. he didn’t fight bollig because he didn’t want to fight a real fighter.

  12. mattryannolan - Dec 4, 2013 at 10:49 AM

Roussel realized that they were up one late in the third so taking a penalty would hurt his team. I don’t understand how people don’t see that?

If he gets a penalty and the Hawks score then people would be calling him an idiot for getting baited into something.

I understand you’re a Hawks fan but surely you guys can calm down for 2 seconds to realize that you don’t take a penalty late in a game especially when the other team is getting lots of chances.

Stars got an amazing performance from Kari like they do almost every night. At the end of the day it’s all about the W. Good job Stars!

    • comeonnowguys - Dec 4, 2013 at 12:17 PM

No I agree. That’s what teams would do quite often to the Blackhawks when they would get a lead in the third. (The pre-winning Blues from a few years go come to mind.)

My only problem is this: if you run at Kane and Toews like he did in the previous game, if you jump a guy like Shaw (not that many, many people want to), and you do that “taunt” (really? That’s a taunt?), you open yourself up for that line of criticism.

      • harrbenj - Dec 4, 2013 at 12:43 PM

Hey, I get the criticism, I’m just saying there was nothing to be gained by taking Bolig’s bait and firing up the blackhawks that late in the game. People can criticize him all they want for not doing something that would have been dumb from a strategic standpoint, but I myself get why he didn’t do it. Hey, maybe you guys are right and he didn’t want to fight Bolig anyway. I can’t speak for Roussel’s intentions. But the fact of the matter is there was nothing to gain by fighting him other than to appease blackhawks players who wanted another shot at him. They’ll get another chance next week, and I for one am already looking forward to that game.

  13. gbfb88 - Dec 4, 2013 at 11:10 AM

@hammerhead5573, yea, not so much. The hawks are a GREAT team. I don’t hate on them. Their fans, however, are tremendous douchebags. Present company included.

  14. dadawg77 - Dec 4, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Its one game in 82. Hawks played well but had a few defensive breakdowns that cost the game. The Hawks beat Lehtomen a few times where he didn’t see the puck but was pads were there. While he is a big position style goalie, not sure how often that will happen.

As for the season, Hawks are in first with everyone chasing. Because of the Circus trip Hawks have played the most games vs the West and least vs the East. So I like what the teams has done and its future for one goal cubed.

  15. sjsharks66 - Dec 4, 2013 at 11:23 AM

I don’t even need to respond. Everyone already said what I was going to say. Easiest argument I have been involved in on PHT. :)

  16. hammerhead5573 - Dec 4, 2013 at 12:17 PM

Well at least the mindless knuckleheads stick together I will give them that.
@ mattryannolan, I’ll admit I am new to this hockey thing. Only been watching since 82 but last time I checked when 2 players fight they both go to the box, rarely does just one. So why would Dallas have been short handed? You read into it too much. He wanted nothing to do with Bolig.
@ gffb88 thanks but I consider the source when they use “we all hate you and douchebags” in describing a fan base.
@sjsharks, good thing you stopped when you did, it does help to make sense once in awhile. Wasn’t it you just the other day calling out someone who said they speak for all SJ fans. And now all of a sudden you are speaking for all fans. Weird how that works. Hypocrite.

  17. blackhawksdynasty - Dec 4, 2013 at 12:40 PM

Tip of the cap to Lehtonen, he played a heck of a game. Hopefully he gets some decent recognition as he’s a very underrated goaltender.
Move on, fellow Hawks fans, even the best team can’t win every night.

    • darksidecowboy - Dec 5, 2013 at 2:58 PM

Finally a Hawks fan I can respect, thank you. 2 cups in 4 years, fun in Chi-town. Stars fans are hungry to get back there.

  18. cfos00 - Dec 4, 2013 at 1:05 PM

Hawks ran into a hot goalie and didn’t elevate their shots enough last night. Nothing wrong with that. It was a good effort. You aren’t going to win all of the games, even when you outplay the other team. Digging a giant hole throughout the first half of that game certainly didn’t help. Truth be told, we probably did outplay them last night but they could probably say the same for Friday’s game where we looked a little flat. It happens. It’s just one game, just hope that they get a better result in the next one.

  19. sjsharks66 - Dec 4, 2013 at 1:12 PM

I never said I spoke for all sharks fans in this article or that I speak for all fans in general. By “we all hate you” I was referring to all the people in this article that sees the Hawks and their fans for what they really are. A good, but smug team and fan base. Not sure how that makes me a hypocrite.

    • blackhawksdynasty - Dec 4, 2013 at 2:32 PM

Not a hypocrite, just a fool for painting everybody with the same brush. Enjoy your never ending cup envy.

    • hammerhead5573 - Dec 4, 2013 at 3:01 PM

Focus man, focus. Read my comment again, then read your comment from just a few days ago. I’m not doing the work for you.

  20. endusersolutions2013 - Dec 4, 2013 at 11:01 PM

He avoided Bollig for good reason. A few weeks ago, he checked someone through the plexiglass, and Bollig probably was not seriously ticked at the guy.

Maybe Brandon can really get behind a well placed hit and maybe have the jerk land in the 3rd row.
