Video: Tortorella gives Hansen an earful (and, a few pokes) following MacArthur goal

Nov 28, 2013, 8:44 PM EDT

It might’ve been the angriest moment of John Tortorella’s tenure as Vancouver’s head coach.

Midway through the first period of the Canucks-Senators game in Ottawa, Tortorella exploded on Vancouver forward Jannik Hansen for what looked to be a pretty pedestrian back-checking effort on Clarke MacArthur‘s opening tally.

Here’s the goal (Hansen is No. 36 in white):

And here’s the wrath:

That ended up being Hansen’s last shift of the period, as he was benched for the remainder of the first and finished with just 3:11 of ice time.

The Canucks, who have lost seven of eight, went into the first intermission down 1-0.

The bigger story is the continued lack of Canuck goal scoring which appears as if it will continue into perpituity.

i for one have no problem with accountability. he made a bonehead move? light him up. the amount of money these guys are making does make one accountable to varying degree, just like you at your job.

vancouver is a decent team, rangers are an ok team. each one is playing like it.

I pity the boss who would talk to me like that and dare touch me.

Ranger fan here. Lack of scoring is our problem still to this day but for the Canucks it’s simple: Torts stinks….

    • ghostm121 - Nov 28, 2013 at 9:32 PM

Your absolutely delirious, canucks were 19th in goals last year under av, 17th currently under torts, rangers are even worse this year at 26th under av, canucks could not score as soon as 2012 rolled around, but keep blaming torts when you should be worrying about av.

    I stand corrected.

You know you’re bad when you’re giving up multiple point games to David Booth.

  5. drewzducks - Nov 28, 2013 at 9:23 PM

Way to go Torts. Give it to that gutless Dane !

  6. bleedrangerblue - Nov 28, 2013 at 9:23 PM

Just look what he did to Kreider. Just look what he did to Richards. And no Torts Hagelin doesn’t stink you do. See you Saturday….

  7. slysipops - Nov 28, 2013 at 9:37 PM

DID TORTS MAYBE SAY SOETHING LIKE THIS ?……………………

    • blomfeld - Nov 28, 2013 at 9:54 PM

Comrade Slysipops … Torts is ‘good’ people friend, no two ways about it … even a blind man can see that … anyway, in the ‘spirit’ of decency, I’m glad to see the Canucks prevailing in this one, as there’s going to be the ‘devil to pay’ next time they come out west, trust me …

Hansen is such a gutless, cheap-shoting piece of garbage and seeing Torts give him the business warms my heart. Plus, he’s not good enough to float. If 3rd liners don’t backcheck, they sit.

    • hawkeedawg - Nov 29, 2013 at 12:54 AM

tdrusher:…I don’t know what Hansen you are talking about because you obviously don’t watch Canucks games. You are a gutless, piece of garbage with verbal diarrhea.Go watch football as your avatar name seems to say you might know something about that sport, but I doubt it. Troll

      • tdrusher225 - Nov 29, 2013 at 5:09 PM

The dude has a clear history of sneaky, dirty, and irresponsible hits. Only a Vancouver honk would try to defend a guy like Hansen. He’s not the worst the league has to offer on the gutless punk level (Kaleta/Lapierre), but is still a total sleaze.

This kind of coaching is too risky. There is a time and place to get on a player, but I don’t think too many professional players are motivated by someone screaming in their face and poking at them. I know I wouldn’t want to do squat for an assclown like torts!

    • enollatsknarf - Nov 29, 2013 at 10:41 AM

Meh. This is no big deal, players get yelled at for playing poorly. It only became an article because it’s Tortorella. He and Roy seem to get an article every time they do anything slightly controversial. They are media darlings after all.

so good to see…sometimes you have to give it to a player to wake him up and make sure he’s accountable…

Being a Flyers fan, I have had a strong distaste for Tortoletta since he was in Tampa Bay and it continued when he was the coash of the Rangers. He is a hothead, even though he had every right to be upset.
