Report: ‘Tension’ between Jets and Evander Kane

Evander Kane‘s name is right back in the trade-rumor mill after what TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported yesterday on the radio (audio), per theScore:

“Curious situation in Winnipeg because he’s not asked for a trade, and the Jets aren’t shopping him so why is his name even out there? Well, one goal in twelve games, you saw the Claude Noel news conference in the last week or two and it was after a game Kane had played particularly poorly… Noel froze and thought better of [commenting on Kane's performance] and said ‘not going there.’

There’s tension and people can’t figure out fully whether it’s that Evander does not really like it in Winnipeg or with the Jets? Are the coaches unhappy with him, how has he fit in with the team? And so outside people looking in are saying ‘one goal in the last 12 games, minus player more than not, still playing 21-25 minutes a night… is he available?’ And nobody’s really gotten to that point yet, but they’re kind of waiting to see if this guy might be available.”

Kane, 22, is in the second year of a six-year, $31.5 million deal with the Jets. His talent can’t be denied, but it’s no surprise to hear there’s “tension” between him and the club. (See: “My definition of a healthy scratch is a healthy player not playing.”)

The Jets beat the Islanders, 3-2, last night, with Kane logging 19:49 of ice time and registering three shots, with no points.

If they don’t want him, we’ll take him.

I’m sure fans of 28 other NHL teams are thinking pretty much the exact same thing.

      • chicagobtech - Nov 28, 2013 at 3:27 PM

This Chicago fan is hoping the Blackhawks simply observe, rather than participate, in trades for E. Kane.

      • c9castine - Nov 29, 2013 at 1:24 AM

so is this penguins fan (spectate rather than be involved).

i mean come on, this was predictable sooner or later. this guys ego and attitude is no secret, its pretty out of control by NHL standards. Throw in some tough times where the team still isn’t winning and he stopped scoring…

a guy like Evander Kane will flame up in this situation every time. nobody who wants to win Cups wants that on their team, good player or not.

    • joey4id - Nov 28, 2013 at 5:21 PM

What? Torts’ relationship with Kane will last as long as one would between Donald Trump & Rosie O’Donnell.

      • c9castine - Nov 29, 2013 at 1:26 AM

i normally don’t like your comments even as a Pens fan but that was about as good of an analogy as any

      • joey4id - Nov 29, 2013 at 7:21 PM

c9, Thanks, but I’m not a Pens fan nor a fan of any team. I’m more of a hockey fanatic, and the Pens are one of the fun teams to watch as well as many others.

The devils need to make this happen.

    • 950003cups - Nov 28, 2013 at 2:46 PM

I would love to have that talent here in NJ, but some players talents are not worth their baggage. If he comes here and makes problems, and has a very high cap hit, it can spell disaster. Plus Winnipeg will look for the highest bidder. Which would be Henrique, Greene, and either Larsson or Gelinas from NJ.

      NOT WORTH IT

      • devilsarethebest - Nov 28, 2013 at 3:09 PM

Haha were talking about Kane, not Crosby. Larsson and a pick will do it if tension is really that high but until he’s a healthy scratch well never know.

      • 950003cups - Nov 28, 2013 at 5:26 PM

Larsson and a pick would be worth it. But in a bidding war with 29 other teams, it’s gonna cost a lot more.

      • c9castine - Nov 29, 2013 at 1:29 AM

actually new jersey might be desperate enough for offense that it’d be worth it. if any guy in the league can tell somebody to sit down, and shut up right now its two of the all time greats, jaromir jagr and martin brodeur.

that being said, you can’t afford to give up the assets to get him, even if thats just a roster player and a high pick/prospect

The Jets better wise up and send Noel packing before he costs them a second potential young superstar .

    • hubeydubeydoo11 - Nov 28, 2013 at 1:03 PM

Is burmistrov the other young potential superstar youre talking about? Cuz it was a shame to see such good talent leave the NHL.

  4. 7mantel - Nov 28, 2013 at 1:28 PM

    Delzotto for Kane !

  5. rbbbaron - Nov 28, 2013 at 1:33 PM

Alright Ken Holland, get on the phone and find out if they’re in need of a center and will take one with a slightly smaller cap hit…

  6. icelovinbrotha215 - Nov 28, 2013 at 2:35 PM

He needs better people around him in his inner-circle. The kid has an immense amount of talent but doesn’t seem to want to humble himself.

    • charlieconway96 - Nov 28, 2013 at 3:49 PM

Was thinking the same thing, he’s got all the talent in the world (and based on the photo above some awesomely terrible hair). Just needs some more talent around him to boost production as well as some veterans to whip his attitude into shape.

  7. saintsredwings - Nov 28, 2013 at 3:24 PM

He’d look great in the Winged Wheel

  8. phil4444phil - Nov 28, 2013 at 3:49 PM

Bob McKenzie’s version of “Much Ado About Nothing”. Before we just accept the rumour mill as truth consider a previous story
    . http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2012/06/16/report-evander-kane-doesnt-want-to-negotiate-with-jets/

And a few weeks after the above tripe began to float near the surfice of the toilet bowl, Evander signed a very lucrative 5 year deal with the same Jets the article says he didn’t even want to negotiate with.

  9. thedavesiknowiknow - Nov 28, 2013 at 5:01 PM

I’ve been reading this story for 3 years.

  10. tdrusher225 - Nov 28, 2013 at 7:31 PM

They should probably look to part ways with Claude Noel first. Never underestimate how hugely beneficial coaching changes can be for young teams (See: Patrick Roy)

  11. subliminalnoize - Nov 29, 2013 at 12:30 AM

I know its out there but I’ll give the jets Erat and Orlov for E. Kane.

    • subliminalnoize - Nov 29, 2013 at 12:31 AM

      Oh,and i’ll raise you a Green!
