Isles share Stadium Series uniform; Tavares thinks they’re ‘really sharp’

Nov 27, 2013, 12:39 AM EDT

The New York Islanders rolled out the duds they’ll don against the New York Rangers in a Stadium Series matchup at Yankee Stadium on Jan. 29.

New York Newsday shared the handout of Tavares dressed in the full uniform at midnight, so feast your eyes:

source:

The jersey-wearer is impressed, for one.

“I think they’re really sharp,” Tavares said. “We’ve seen in the past in a lot of outdoor games a kind of retro, heritage, old-school kinda look. But this is newer, more modern.”

(Matt Martin calls them futuristic, which might make some yearn for the addition of a Daft Punk mask.)

Newsday’s criticism: where’s the Island?

The classic emblem, featuring an orange profile of Long Island, has been done away with in favor of a more stylish design. The Stadium Series jerseys simplify the team¹s symbol by enlarging the familiar top of the logo — an “NY” that morphs into a hockey stick — on the chest. General manager Garth Snow as well as coaches and players from the organization had input on the design.

So, what do you think? Would that look be George Jetson-approved?

I dislike the logo, and don’t really understand the whole chrome thing to begin with, but the rest of the design and colours are nice. Definitely an improvement from their alternates!

  2. pftfan - Nov 27, 2013 at 12:50 AM

The modern striping is actually a very nice touch on the shorts and sleeves. But the chrome logo is a bit of a muddle, could’ve used more orange.

I’d say these are a 6/10. Not bad, but given the Isles history of terrible alternates, this might be the best they’re capable of.

    • thecheeman - Nov 27, 2013 at 7:48 AM

I’d say there’s either too much orange or not enough.

Removing all orange except for one thin stripe or splash could have been effective on a mostly blue/white/chrome jersey.

Or the center NY needs some orange somewhere.

I think everyone’s (justifiably) giving these jerseys a break in comparison to the awful blacks, but these could have been much better.

should have brought back the old orange ones. those were the best 3rd’s we’ve ever had.

i’m not all that butthurt about the loss of the island on the logo. the puck is gone too and so is the text. i kind of get the minimalist aspect of it? i dont totally hate it, but i dont love it either.

  4. phatmat456 - Nov 27, 2013 at 1:40 AM

If u wanted to save the Long Island theme you shouldn’t have chased them out of town…every vote counts

    • kenyon150 - Nov 27, 2013 at 9:13 AM

You do realize Brooklyn is on Long Island right? politically its the city Geographically its on Long Island.

  5. murtdurt - Nov 27, 2013 at 2:51 AM

I hope this isn’t a trend for all the other teams playing in an outdoor game this year

    • hockey412 - Nov 27, 2013 at 9:37 AM

It will be…the league was seeing $$$$ as soon as these games were a part of the deal. They always sell, too.

To be honest I’m only a little bit disgusted, too…kind of victimless. We want the jerseys, they make the jerseys….why not. And I’ll bet they’ll be available riiiiigggghht around Christmas :)

  6. pitpenguinsrulez - Nov 27, 2013 at 3:21 AM

I like it but the main logo doesn’t look right at all. Using their current logo for the center emblem would’ve been better and on the shoulders they could’ve put back on the 4 stripes commemorating their 4 Stanley Cups. I just hope the Pens jersey doesn’t look retarted!

    Isles jersey 7/10

  7. badgerhockey77 - Nov 27, 2013 at 3:39 AM

    Logo needs some orange!

  8. bettyminer125 - Nov 27, 2013 at 5:49 AM

as Jeffrey implied I’m taken by surprise that a person able to get paid $7295 in one month on the internet. use this link ……….>http:/\qr.net/l4jW

  9. 7mantel - Nov 27, 2013 at 5:57 AM

phatmat456: Last time I looked Brooklyn was still on LI . That said I really dont like the new jersey but I’m a Ranger fan so my opinion doesn’t matter !

  10. scotttheskeptic - Nov 27, 2013 at 6:36 AM

It could be worse. Gorton’s Fisherman come to anyone’s mind?

  11. tjvalley - Nov 27, 2013 at 7:01 AM

Why does everyone always have to pick things apart. They are nice. I like them. Maybe the islanders could use some support from their fans instead of constant criticism.

    • thecheeman - Nov 27, 2013 at 7:50 AM

      Big test will be:

are these jerseys nice enough to have Islanders fans buy them in significant amounts so soon after dropping those black third-jerseys on them? Not sure about that.

    • ibieiniid - Nov 27, 2013 at 8:38 AM

lol because PHT is filled with fashion designers.

“not enough orange! less stripes! more color!”
jesus herbert christ this is f’ing hockey, not E!

      • patthehockeyfan - Nov 27, 2013 at 10:41 AM

Perfect comment, ibieiniid! Notice that other PHT stories have 3 or 5 or 6 comments? This one, about fashion of all things, has 27 comments (mine makes 28) and counting.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 27, 2013 at 10:44 AM

well I’m not innocent of commenting a few times either, but at least i’m not MSPainting what I think would look good on John Tavares lol

  12. ironyisadeadscene - Nov 27, 2013 at 7:32 AM

I’m digging them. Like someone said earlier…could be worse with that damn fisherman holding the stick.

Side note: I want Carolina to be in an outdoor game and incorporate the Whalers into their jersey

  13. Rob - Nov 27, 2013 at 7:56 AM

Better than the Isles atrocious third jerseys…

    • ibieiniid - Nov 27, 2013 at 8:43 AM

speaking of which, last night may have been my first time seeing the Ducks’ third jersey. that thing is pretty sick. kinda reminds me of one of those old yellow/black/red ‘Nucks jerseys…. but better.

  14. vgraziano - Nov 27, 2013 at 8:09 AM

Maybe they should spend a little more time figuring out how to win a few games instead of what their uniforms will look like for one game in the end of January….

    • ibieiniid - Nov 27, 2013 at 8:47 AM

lol yeah, I’m sure the people responsible for the on-ice play are dedicating tireless hours to their 3rd jersey. Kyle Okposo stressing over which shade of orange to use. Jack Capuano evaluating: Lace? or no lace? I think Poulin’s play as of late can be attributed to the tough decision of “one stripe or two?”

just because you can only focus on one thing at a time doesn’t mean the entire Islanders organization is the same way.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 27, 2013 at 9:01 AM

        outdoor jersey*

  15. xdj511 - Nov 27, 2013 at 9:11 AM

    Fish Sticks!

  16. kenyon150 - Nov 27, 2013 at 9:17 AM

I like them. Obviously their main jersey are sooo much better. But as third jerseys go this is pretty nice. The logo could use some orange maybe as like tape on the hockey stick.

  17. xdj511 - Nov 27, 2013 at 9:18 AM

Are the Rangers going to come out with ANOTHER new jersey or are they going to use the same one from the 2011 winter classic?

    • thecheeman - Nov 27, 2013 at 9:56 AM

they already released the chrome logo for the Rangers, so new one.

  18. govtminion - Nov 27, 2013 at 9:23 AM

All things considered, by Islanders standards this is a really nice alternate. Compared to some of their attempts, this feels really understated, almost classy. Not a chrome fan, but if they went with this for their alternate full-time I’d be fine with that. It’s a huge improvement over the orange monstrosity they wore a couple of years ago. (And that’s coming from a Denver Broncos fan over on PFT!)

  19. multiplemiggs - Nov 27, 2013 at 11:53 AM

yes everyone, Brooklyn is technically on Long Island but a borough of NYC. I am from Brooklyn, Canarsie, and as an Islander fan (who actually knows his teams logo) I can say that the island in the logo is just Nassau and Suffolk counties which NYers call Long island. The orange map in the logo stops at the Queens border. The logo would have to change so that the orange island is “zoomed out” and streched so they could then fit Queens and Brooklyn in therefore showing the entire “island” which consists of Brooklyn, Queens, then Nassau and Suffolk counties. Geez I really am the only one who knows anything around here.
