PHT Extra: In praise of the St. Louis Blues

Nov 26, 2013, 4:59 PM EDT

The St. Louis Blues won again last night, shutting out the Minnesota Wild, 3-0, and improving their record to 17-3-3.

As a reward for their fine play, they get to be the subject of our latest PHT Extra. (A massive honor, if there ever was one.)

So…what makes the Blues so good? And what could possibly hold them back from winning their first Stanley Cup in franchise history? Can Roman Turek deliver when it counts?

Halford sez: I goofed a bit with the Blues-Kings info — St. Louis and L.A. did not meet in the first round in both years. In 2012, they met in the second round. I apologize profusely and accept all the inevitable scorn the comments section will bring.

I just don’t see the Blues going out to get Miller. Halak and Elliot are playing very well, and Jake Allen has proven to be a reliable fill in if either get hurt. Things are clicking right now in STL, and hopefully they continue to ride their newfound confidence. LGB

      jhaegs,

We’ve been commenting on here a long time as fellow Blues fans and I got to agree with your point. However, in the same manner as Jason suggest…goaltending really is the only area where I don’t feel 100% confident. It does very much intrigue me as to the possibilities of this team if we had someone like Ryan Miller in net (not to mention grooming Jake Allen).

That said, I don’t believe it’s time to hit the panic button at all. We’re playing great and the fact about Halak is he came ready to play this season and in the best shape of his career. I’d argue that he’s actually still trying to find his game a bit and if he can settle into a groove we’ll be fine with him. My biggest point here would be we still have awhile till the deadline to see where we truly stand. If Halak doesn’t appear up to it, then maybe go after a guy like Miller then. There is no need to rush the possibilities right now.

I’ll say this much Brough, as a Blues fan, my biggest concern about acquiring Miller would be keeping him at a REASONABLE price next year while Allen comes along. I really don’t want much of this team broken up and we have a lot of pieces to atone for this coming off season.

All the same, LET’S GO BLUES!!!

Ehhh… Halak’s posting a .911 on a phenomenal defensive team. I imagine some folks would argue that constituting “playing very well.” It’s getting them by for sure, but there are 26 goalies posting numbers as good or better and most don’t have the support that he does. You put Miller behind a team like that and they’d be nigh-impossible to score on.

Still, the flip side is, what would they have to give up for Miller? Going by the ransom the Isles paid for Vanek… probably a hell of a lot. Might not be worth it.

Less Jason and Mike, more Kay Adams, please.

Blues have3 really stepped it up this year (and this is not from a blues fan) Blues, Hawks and Sharks are the 3 best teams in the NHL. Dog fight till then, one of these 3 will likely win the cup. (Bruins are the lone EFC team with the chanve)
