St. Louis defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk has the flu and may miss tonight’s game (on NBCSN) in Minnesota.

According to NHL.com’s Lou Korac, Shattenkirk has been told to stay away from the team for the day. As of this morning, Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock was unsure if the 24-year-old would be well enough to play versus the Wild.

Shattenkirk is one of the NHL’s top offensive blue-liners. In 22 games, he has one goal and 15 assists. Yet, testament to the strength of the Blues’ defense corps, his 16 points ranks behind teammates Alex Pietrangelo (18 points) and Jay Bouwmeester (17). As the NHL on NBC research team noted earlier today, of the 12 defensemen in the NHL who have at least 15 points this season, three play for the Blues.

While Shattenkirk is questionable, one Blues defenseman who is definitely expected to play is Carlo Colaiacovo. It will be the season debut for the 30-year-old, who recently signed a one-year deal with the club.

Jhaegs, you get your carlo appearance but obviously this isn’t the situation you wanted. hopefully shatty can get better and carlo will be playing for cole instead.

i’ll admit, you were right that cole has been pretty atrocious. my only concern is that hitch would obviously play him over carlo, what does that say about his thoughts on carlo? unfortunately we might have to see both tonight, which would be no good for anyone (except wild fans).

Hahaha. Ya, not exactly ideal. I think they were trying to get Carlo up to speed before they just threw him in the lineup. Carlo is an average defenseman, and my only complaint when he played for the Blues was his decision making on when to pinch. Cole needs to learn to use his body instead of reaching for players. Too many times he reached, got outmuscled, and then did something stupid in frustration like hold or crosscheck the player. As much depth as we have with our offense, it’d be nice to get some more in our defense. We’ll see how Carlo does tonight, and hopefully Shatty pulls through!
