Video: Borowiecki can’t return after being boarded by Westgarth

Nov 24, 2013, 7:06 PM EDT

Ottawa Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki won’t return to Sunday’s game after a boarding check by Carolina Hurricanes tough guy Kevin Westgarth, the Ottawa Citizen’s Wayne Scanlan reports.

Here’s video of the hit (H/T to the Hockey News).

Westgarth received a two-minute boarding penalty. The 29-year-old doesn’t have a suspension history.

Borowiecki, 24, delivered a questionable hit of his own about a week ago.

Dirty hit and showing a lack of respect for the player on the ice.

every bit as accidental as was the elbow to datsyuk…

NHL may have consider misconduct penalties for hits from behind if players continue to be reckless. Wait! Sarcastic alert. I take that back since players are policing the game these and other dirty hits will eventually decline.

The ability to police the game is being removed from the players hands and placed into the hands of the officials and Colin Campbell’s protege, Brendan Shanahan.

Malicious attacks/hits like this should result in the player being suspended for as long as the opposing player is injured. I doubt these types of dirty plays and head hunting will stop unless there are severe repercussions.

And if Boroweicki is fine and returns next game or the game after? Then there’s the opposite side where a hit could be accidental but end up being illegal and injure a player for life. No way that’s fair in either case, so no point in pursuing that kind of suspension option.

As a Canes fan who was at the game, I don’t think there was intent to injure but the play was wreckless . Westgarth deserves to be suspended and it didn’t sit well with me that he seemed cavalier about the play afterward and the rest of the game. I was embarrassed. It was a bad play.
