Sens coach calls Westgarth’s hit ‘a disrespectful play’

Nov 24, 2013, 8:28 PM EDT

The NHL will determine if Carolina Hurricanes winger Kevin Westgarth deserves a suspension for his check on Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki, but Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean certainly isn’t happy. The Ottawa Citizen’s Wayne Scanlan passes along his disapproval.

(Westgarth wears No. 8. It’s OK if that was confusing …)

Here’s video of the hit:

Westgarth received a two-minute boarding penalty for that check. Borowiecki was unable to return to the game with a strained neck.

The only confussion is due to 50% of this article being MIA on the app..

yeah, that’s most likely the spot where the video is supposed to be. you probably have all the text.

Maybe the coach should look at Cowen’s elbow on Datsyuk last night. What a jackass.

    • sunderlanding - Nov 24, 2013 at 11:55 PM

It’s normal for a coach to be biased towards his players, but maybe you’ve never been part of a competitive team.

The hit served absolutely no hockey purpose. Kind of like MMA fighters (which I never intentionally turn on), pummeling an opponent after he’s down.

    • dueman - Nov 24, 2013 at 9:36 PM

See what you did there? You made a very insightful, intelligent opening sentence, and then followed it with a very uninformed, and unintelligent sentence. How are people supposed to vote on a comment like that?

      • ibieiniid - Nov 25, 2013 at 8:18 AM

I voted up. You know, because I don’t like to see unconscious people punched repeatedly in the head.

      • joey4id - Nov 25, 2013 at 9:29 AM

If they are not unconscious they are at times if not most times already concussed while being punched repeatedly in the head. Ask GSP how he felt after his last fight.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 25, 2013 at 9:58 AM

I don’t get that sport man. How do they allow the end of the match to be determined by whether a man is still conscious? It’s not enough that his eyes are rolling back in his head, but we have to make sure he takes a few more destructive headshots and is in no way able to defend himself from the onslaught before we stop the fight. that’s ridiculous. that’s one step before a death match, IMO.

      • dueman - Nov 25, 2013 at 2:18 PM

So the guy compares something that is an illegal play in hockey to something that is totally legal in another sport altogether, and you guys think that that makes sense? Whether you like MMA or not has absolutely nothing to do with that comparison. Wow, is all I can say…

    • sunderlanding - Nov 24, 2013 at 11:53 PM

You pummel an opponent so they don’t get back up. You do realize they don’t just fight until one of them falls down?

      • ibieiniid - Nov 25, 2013 at 8:19 AM

aaaaaand that’s why the long term effects on MMA fighters will be 1000x worse than anything Ali deals with.

      • sunderlanding - Nov 25, 2013 at 2:48 PM

That may be true, but that’s the point. I was refering to the comment that it didn’t serve any purpose.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 25, 2013 at 2:51 PM

that’s true. i was a bit off base. that’s ok tho, it was 8:20 AM on a Monday lol.

        Fair enough. Have some coffee.

    somebody find paul a rag…

where was he on the cowen elbow? the ottawa whinging complex in full gear…brace yourself for more to come as senators slide further out of relevance

every look shows westgarth stumbled…perhaps the unfortunate boroweicki should learn to keep his feet

    hope he’s okay

and what’s with lehner…less time spent assessing diving calls and more time spent standing up, and playing his position

    sieve central

    • elvispocomo - Nov 25, 2013 at 2:15 PM

Stumbled? You’ve just confirmed what I already had figured out, you’re trolling or stupid or both and don’t deserve future responses.

Is there an organization in all of Professional Hockey that whines about hits more then the bottom feeding no Cup ever winning Ottawa Senators?

  6. ibieiniid - Nov 25, 2013 at 8:15 AM

Player 8 sounds like a govt. project to control the outcome of NHL seasons.

  7. shaundre93 - Nov 25, 2013 at 10:09 AM

My initial reaction was that of most of yours, “Really Paul? Right after the Cowen hit you say this? Shut up.”

Then I watched the replay. That was one of the grossest hits I’ve seen in a while. While hypocritical, Paul was right. He literally could have paralyzed him hitting him like that. Absolutely no need for the hit, the dude was just trying to get up. Talk about targeting a defenseless player. I’d like to see a stiff suspension, but who the f*** knows what Shannahan is thinking.

    • ibieiniid - Nov 25, 2013 at 10:34 AM

man I don’t know, if it was a SPLIT second later, the guy would have been fully standing and would likely not have even been a penalty, just a standard board play, pinning the guy against the wall. the fact that the guy was in a vulnerable position for that small part of a second is what makes this a bad hit. it’s probably penalty worthy, but it’s more unfortunate than dirty. just my opinion.

      • elvispocomo - Nov 25, 2013 at 2:17 PM

Disagree. It’d still have been a hit from behind, and if you have a player in front of you getting up he’s not going to be that dangerous that you have to rush to get that split second timing when making a hit. Just hold up and you can stand over him and pin him without much effort as he gets up rather than risk a dangerous play.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 25, 2013 at 2:26 PM

he wasn’t even going that fast though. I’ve seen guys give harder shots than that and get away with not even a minor before.

it doesn’t matter though, looks like the PHT Shanahanahanahans have already made their decision. LEAGUE OF ZERO CONTACT IT IS!

    • leninthebuff - Nov 26, 2013 at 8:07 AM

It was a bad hit for sure but considering your guy gives a drive-by elbow to a players jaw who is without the puck you should just STFU.
