Sabres ‘turd burger’ third jersey gets expected mockery in debut

Nov 24, 2013, 5:41 PM EST

The Buffalo Sabres wore their “turd burger” third jerseys for the first of what’s planned to be 10 appearances in 2013-14 on Sunday against the Detroit Red Wings. As expected, the reactions were almost as uniformly negative as Buffalo’s uniform is not exactly … uniform.

Gathering the reactions from every corner of the Internet might get a little tedious, so here’s a few of the highlights.

The Buffalo News’ Mike Harrington evokes Charles Barkley’s unique pronunciation and the “turd burger” meme for quite an effect:

(Harrington also notes that the team is incorporating the gold into scoreboard displays and other productions today.)

Harrington’s Buffalo News colleague John Vogl feels like the team almost as dual personalities:

For Red Wings-focused blogger George Malik of Kukla’s Korner, those who defend the jersey might be showing their love for the Sabres more than their aesthetic tastes:

One fan probably captured the mood for most:

If you want to know a little more about the “process” behind those much-maligned duds, the Olean Times Herald passes along some interesting nuggets, including the fact that Reebok designed a special font for the third jerseys.

Grow up you clown. There’s no room for that in the hockey community.

“New #Sabres third jersey: just as horrible in person as it is in the pictures.”……just like the team itself

    • thomasvanek - Nov 24, 2013 at 5:50 PM

      That makes like no sense

Still wish we could see pics and videos on the app. Your IT dept still sucks.

The ‘C’ and ‘A’s are on the shoulders. So dumb looking

I was at the game and only 20 rows up. You cannot even see the the c or a. The placement is terrible. If they would have used gold as the primary color on both sides with blue and white incorporated in it, there wouldn’t be a problem.

I like the numbers. Hate everything else.

The tweets are being cut off by right side of screen… as well as no videos, pictures or ability to use my thunbs on this shamefully built pos app. ’96 these problems wouldnt be exceptable. ( Yes “I know” to all that took that last comment literal.)
So shamefull its something Flyers and Pens fans can agree on. Stop flushing money down the drain paying Florio and fix your app.

App looks great here. Personal problem?

God People are funny. Any time a team makes a new jersey, edits the logo a little bit, or reveals a throwback everybody says how ugly it is. They dont even do it ironically either. Its like they literally forget that they have called every jersey in existence ugly. It doesnt matter what the thing looks like either. No matter what, we’re going to get a dozen stories with a dozen jokes about it from every media outlet that covers the team, and every one of those stories is gonna get a couple dozen comments in agreement. The jokes will go strong for a couple of weeks until another team makes a different (surprise, surprise) ugly alteration to their uniform.

People follow the script to the tee every time and its hilarious.

God, people are funny who just make stuff up for the sake of argument. “ALL” third jerseys have been called ugly? Are you really young or just throwing that stuff out there? Chicago and Philly are two that immediately come to mind as being very well done and very warmly received by their fans. The Rangers third jersey (Liberty head) was extremely successful. Minnesota’s received rave reviews by fans and the media alike, as did Washington’s.

Of course, maybe you meant to say, “Any time (BUFFALO) makes a new jersey, edits the logo a little bit, or reveals a throwback everybody says how ugly it is”, which would actually be accurate. Look up “Worse NHL Jerseys” on the internet and you’ll find the slug and the goat head.

The wilds 3rd jersey, all the flyers new jerseys (specially the 2nd classic), the first winter classic for the pens, rangers winter classic, hawks winter classic, new stars unis… I can keep naming jerseys I did not hear negotiable things about if you want.

Let’s be honest, this is more of an costume than a jersey. There is like a cape on it or something. The sabres are up there with the Canucks for most jerseys that deserve to be forgotten.
