Sabres to debut third (aka ‘turd burger’) jerseys on Sunday

Nov 21, 2013, 2:59 PM EDT

Third jersey Ott

The Buffalo Sabres have announced they’ll debut their highly-contentious third jerseys for Sunday’s home date against the Detroit Red Wings.

The jerseys, modeled here by captain Steve Ott, came under fire almost immediately upon their unveiling. The massive reaction forced Sabres president Ted Black to address them in an Oct. 3 radio spot on WGR:

“It’s received a ton of criticism and a lot of attention. I think it had over 4 million mentions on Twitter. I’ve seen it. It’s something that doesn’t offend me. I think people have had a lot of fun with the criticisms of it. Judge for yourself whenever you see it. If you come into the store and you look at it and say I don’t want to buy it or you do buy it, in terms of moving the needles on revenues, it won’t do anything.

“If it doesn’t sell, it won’t really mean anything to our bottom line. It’s a third jersey. If it’s a turd burger I’ll have to put it on a bun and eat it. It’s the way it is.”

Black said at the time the Sabres would wear the jerseys “proudly” 10 times this season, and here are the dates on which they’ll be worn:

Nov. 24 vs. Detroit Red Wings

Nov. 27 vs. Montreal Canadiens

Dec. 5 vs. New York Rangers

Dec. 14 vs. Calgary Flames

Jan. 4 vs. New Jersey Devils

Jan. 14 vs. Philadelphia Flyers

Feb. 5 vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

March 16 vs. Montreal Canadiens

April 1 vs. New Jersey Devils

April 8 vs. Detroit Red Wings

I bet Pat LaFontaine doesn’t like them either. They look like a walking mustard stain.

I rather liked the red and black ones they had with the big buffalo head on them. That buffalo looked pissed. Why’d they get rid of those?

    • darksidecowboy - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:31 PM

Why don’t they use the old logo (red/black) and use the blue/gold color scheme. Fans loved that logo, make that the third jersey Pegula! I’m not even a Sabres fan but loved that jersey, and yes I’m a Dallas Stars fan. Have to respect that logo and what that Sabres team brought in 1999.

      • amityvillefun - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:33 PM

        I agree man.

  2. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:10 PM

Might be worse than the “Buffaslug”…

  3. trbowman - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:12 PM

I hate being a fan of this team.

  4. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:13 PM

The Black/Red ones you mentioned were definitely BA looking. I saw them on NHL network the other night and it was definitely an intimidating logo… as far as buffaloes go.

  5. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:22 PM

    Definitely…. lol

  6. blue21c - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:32 PM

Turd burger is worse than the hamster uniforms that they just got rid of. What was wrong with the third that they jus had? I thought that was a very nice looking jersey.

    • govtminion - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:58 PM

That was my thought too, the blue one with the yellow stripes. It looked classic, I thought that was pretty good. No idea why they decided to go with this awful thing instead.

I hope Ryan Miller gets traded soon, just so he doesn’t have to wear this wreck.

  7. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:36 PM

In about a decade, this jersey will be a “classic” that the young folk want because of its strangeness. Much like the “Mighty Wing” and “Picasso Coyote”.

  8. muckleflugga - Nov 21, 2013 at 4:37 PM

designers should drop the buffalo element, it’s redundant…how many teams in any sport need direct reference to its home city

the core logo is tired, bad art and flat-out boring

i associate buffalo with the great plains and the boreal forest, not the city of buffalo; ditto the sabre, which recalls the richly deserved beating custer took at little big horn

[ go lakota, northern cheyenne and arapaho ]

a classier design and variant on use of city name and buffalo can be seen here:

    • overunder27 - Nov 21, 2013 at 6:33 PM

You clearly are not from here. Buffalo has one of the rarest opportunities out of all sports cities to actually have the city name incorporated into the design or name of the team, because the city name also happens to be a noun. It’s a “thing” in addition to a place. It’s one of the most cherished aspects of our city and our sports franchises, and you obviously don’t understand that. “Let’s Go, Buff-a-lo!” is our war cry. When’s the last time you heard another city do that? Let’s go, Los Ang-el-es? You just don’t get it. Yes, lets drop the iconic imagery that represents us as a community instead of just a team… brilliant idea. As far as the logos go, the Sabres original is considered one of the best in the league. Good thing your opinion is a rare oddity rather than general consensus.

Well as a devils fan its amusing I’ll get to see those atrocities twice.. that team should just band together and refuse to wear them.

  10. sabatimus - Nov 21, 2013 at 4:52 PM

Only problem I have with the jersey is the fact that the yellow stops midway down the arm and becomes grey. Don’t know the reason for that choice. I do have a problem however with the guy WEARING the jersey..

  11. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 4:55 PM

The side by side front/back photos are the best. The entire back of the jersey is navy blue, making it look like the player is wearing a cape.

  12. girouxed - Nov 21, 2013 at 5:39 PM

Those are cool jerseys lol people have 0 taste.

  13. bsaures - Nov 21, 2013 at 5:49 PM

They need to make a third jersey that focuses more on the sabre element not the Buffalo one. Also the main color in a hockey jersey should never be yellow….period. Yellow stripes is fine

  14. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 6:05 PM

Nike should take over… Imagine what those people would come up with! They’d probably have the Sabres skating around in Buffalo fur speedos or something insane. They did, after all, make a gator skin alternate jersey for UF.

  15. drewzducks - Nov 21, 2013 at 6:24 PM

I think he meant to say “look at the turd modeling our jersey”.

  16. overunder27 - Nov 21, 2013 at 6:24 PM

Ironic that the Sabres will debut their latest marketing gimmick jersey against the Red Wings, of all teams. What you don’t seem to understand, Mr Black, is that the Wings are a model franchise in part because they don’t have to change their look. You and Mr Pegula did right by the fans by brining in Nolan and Lafontaine, but now you need to do right by the fans by fixing our team’s image. For starters, Sabres colors ARE NOT navy blue and yellow/orange; they are royal blue and gold. You need to return the Sabres primary jerseys to the colors and stripe layout they had around 1993 when Lafontaine was playing. (http://ts1.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.4968316254292784&pid=15.1) They are also missing shoulder patches… what’s up with that??? And while you’re at it, make the red & black jerseys our thirds, because those were our best years as a franchise performance-wise and a lot of fans still have them.

    • overunder27 - Nov 21, 2013 at 8:40 PM

How do I get a thumbs down for that? And of course, no elaboration provided as usual. Keep up the good work, cowards.

      • overunder27 - Nov 24, 2013 at 12:34 AM

Wow, keep up the good work. You guys are really making such a difference with these comment ratings! You’re real world shakers!

  17. skr213 - Nov 21, 2013 at 8:29 PM

Ted Black’s comments show the brain talent in the current Sabres front office. He doesn’t care if they sell? Nice. Look at teams like the Sharks where a third-jersey brings in easily half of the jersey revenue. You don’t want to sell twice as many jerseys, Mr. Black? Great, how about you just pay Errorhoff’s over-inflated salary with the change you find in your couch.

    • overunder27 - Nov 21, 2013 at 8:39 PM

Ehrhoff or however the hell you spell his name was overpaid, but isn’t nearly the bust that Leino is.

      • mjw9326mjw9326 - Nov 22, 2013 at 6:53 AM

Don’t forget about your Hart trophy candidate Drew Stafford. Look at that guy’s hall of fame work these last few years.(Insert sarcasm dripping here).

    • screecwe - Nov 22, 2013 at 1:09 AM

Ehrhoff is overpaid? Thank you for letting the entire internet know to ignore all of your hockey related comments. Because it’s obvious you don’t know the the first thing about it.

    • mjw9326mjw9326 - Nov 22, 2013 at 6:51 AM

Oh, but remember Drew Stafford is “so” earning his salary. So is Myers right now (still). The whole thing looks stupid, just like his comment is stupid. So it won’t move the needle as far as revenue goes? Okay, so let me get this straight. You pay someone like Rebok or CCM to make this jersey for you so you can sell it in your store for an overinflated price. But nobody likesit so they won’t buy it. Now you paid out for these and they sit there like a “turdburger” to use his term. That won’t cost your team money? Wow, are you a numbers cruncher for the Federal Government? Maybe you said yes to the $300 toilet seat. Well the good news is you can sit on that seat while laying your turdburger.
Maybe Terry Pegula needs to give Patty some more authority. It appears the housecleaning di not go far enough. Black is still here.

Ted Black and the marketing folks are on acid

    • mjw9326mjw9326 - Nov 22, 2013 at 6:44 AM

I wonder if this is one of Darcy’s brilliant schemes.

  19. elfuegodiablo - Nov 22, 2013 at 12:50 AM

Holy crap, why are you people complaining. This is such an improvement over the BuffaSlug, it’s not even funny.

I swear, some of you are just gonna keep whining until the Sabres just give up and wear a plain white sweater with a huge blue leaf in the middle. Is that what it takes to make you happy?

  20. mjw9326mjw9326 - Nov 22, 2013 at 6:43 AM

Funny, I thought the Sabres team, judging from this season so far, was the REAL Turd(Burger).
